Montoya-Stewart add spark to finale

  • Print

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP)—Montoya-Stewart took a page out of the Hamlin-Keselowski playbook.

Get hit, hit back.

Retaliate and wait for the next strike.

The final two races of the NASCAR season were more like a throwback to the good ol’ boys who settled their feuds on the track.

Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Stewart must have watched the Nationwide Series race a night earlier when Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin added another explosive edition to their long-running conflict.

“Maybe they looked at it and said, ‘It’s worth it,”’ Hamlin said.

Montoya and Stewart became tangled in separate blatant acts of retaliation in the Sprint Cup finale Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Stewart temporarily sent Montoya to the garage; NASCAR kept Montoya parked on pit road.

It’s a type of fiery attitude fans feel NASCAR could use to inject some life into a series where crowning Jimmie Johnson the champion has become a staid formality.

“I’m glad I was an inspiration,” Hamlin said after he won the race. “I think everyone’s got a little fight in them every now and then, especially when they get done wrong. After our performance today, it’s easy to put yesterday behind me.”

Hamlin-Keselowski and Montoya-Stewart were an unexpected heavyweight double-bill caused by frayed nerves and a “nothing to lose” mentality with the season down to the final laps.

Keselowski and Hamlin’s on-track issues deteriorated into a war of words. Montoya and Stewart skipped out without talking to the media.

“I haven’t seen all the replays and I don’t know what happened first and when,” Stewart crew chief Darian Grubb said. “They were racing each other pretty hard and both got frustrated.”

The trouble started Sunday when Montoya tagged Stewart from behind on lap 117, something the two-time Cup champ wouldn’t let slide. Stewart got his payback when he sideswiped the No. 42, slicing the right front tire of Montoya’s Chevrolet and sending the car into the wall. Montoya was forced into the garage to have the car repaired.

Perhaps that’s when Montoya, who enjoyed the best season of his three-year Cup career, plotted revenge.

Montoya returned to the track on lap 145 and quickly had another run-in with Stewart.

NASCAR warned both drivers, “enough is enough and it’s over.” Not so fast.

Montoya used his bumper to send Stewart sliding into the grass along the frontstretch. That was all NASCAR officials had to see, as they immediately black-flagged Montoya for two laps.

The race finished without another incident between the two. Stewart finished 22nd and Montoya was 38th.

Four-time champion Jeff Gordon said Montoya’s aggressiveness was bound to catch up with him.

“He’s a great driver and I think that sometimes he tries to show a little bit too much to people that he’s not going to get pushed around or taken advantage of,” Gordon said. “In this series, sometimes you’ve got to know when to back off and when to push somebody’s buttons and when not to; and who. I think he found out tonight.”

All 267 laps ticked off without another flare-up between Keselowski and Hamlin. Contact between the two led to five Hamlin wrecks in the Nationwide Series dating back to last season, and Hamlin vowed revenge.

He followed through when he tapped Keselowski from behind and spun him out on lap 35, though not a serious enough hit to end his day.

Keselowski made it personal when he said Hamlin “has a lot of problems on and off the racetrack.”

Respected veteran driver Jeff Burton said the sport could do without the trash talking.

“What this sport needs is good racing, it doesn’t need running that mouth,” he said. “I think running that mouth is not what it’s all about. Good hard racing is what fans want to see. There’s a certain portion of people that want to see people yell at each other, but I think the general population is better off.”

The portion of people who want to see a stock car throwdown camped out near Stewart’s hauler. Once Stewart cooled off and came back to his hauler to shake hands with his crew, one fan yelled, “Go punch Juan Pablo!” A couple of fans were specific with the part of the anatomy where they wanted Stewart to kick Montoya.

Most drivers feel they should self-police the field in the garage and on the track.

“NASCAR does a really good job of letting us handle it,” Hamlin said. “They don’t want to get involved. But if it’s something blatant, they feel like they have to do something about it or they’ll hear repercussions from fans.”

What a buch of racist red necks! They think that to win in Nascar the only condition is to be born in the US. The world is now bigger but closer to any person at any country.
Montoya had proved that he is one of the top drivers in the World, not only in some small county of the US.
He does not need the permission of people without any aulture that still think that the world ends at the closest tavern.
They will cry on the next year becaue this "Mexican" (they cannot understand that there are many countries at th south of Rio Grande) will defeat many of their Nascar idols and within few years could be the Cup champion.

Tony Steward is a class act and a man's man. Juan is a clown who has a macho chip on his shoulder. Probably because he's a "panty waste." He talks big, but shows no action. His character was defined in his first "Busch" victory in Mexico City when he intentionally spun out his teammate on the last lap for the victory. It keeps going downhill and has without doubt established his reputation as a "dirty driver."
Tony Stewart has a long standing reputation as a very clean driver and a tremendous competitor who is well respected by his colleagues. Because Tony will not put up with dirty tactics being used against him, it only shows that Juan Pablo is really dumbs for doing what he did. Juan keeps driving like he has so far in his career, he's going to get to know the wall at a lot of tracks. 2009 will be the best year he's ever had, it's gonna be downhill from hear on out.

I've said it before, the way Danica drives the Indy car she might very well become the next Intimidator in NASCAR. That is if Juan Pablo doesn't beat her to it.

Well I'm very serious when I say that Danica would whup Tony like a red-headed stepchild. Think about it. Danica has as much fire as Tony, and about 100% less baggage around her gut. Tony would be gasping for air before the shoving match started and Danica would flatten him wink one wink of her left eye. Then his crew would have to strategically hold him back while he yells.. "let me at her!..." IF they let him go, he wouldn't know what hit him and would wake up in the hospital. Then he would sneak out early the next day and go slash her tires like a real man.... what a wuss.

KimberlyW, I am not a fan of Gordon either, but I do respect him for being a good person. He went way out of his way to befriend this family, and I have nothing but gratitude for his kindness. You are correct, when you say that this is what NASCAR is really about! I am sure that Stewart does many good things of this nature as well, but his treatment in this, hopefully isolated, case seemed a bit cold. Thank you for the holiday wish, and I hope you have a very nice holiday!

There is nothing that I have posted, that is not true. If the shoe were on the other foot, Stewart would have done exactly the same as JPM did. I simply stated that it was ill advised for Stewart to push the issue given that there was 150 laps to go, his car was fast enough to have finished in the top 5 if he would of exercised even the slightest bit of patience. His temper got the better of him, and he lost out because of it. Stewart is a good driver, just not the smartest at times. I am not a JPM fan, though his stock is on the rise. Mark Martin is my driver of choice.

FYI, JPM did back it up and took him out, did he not!

Here is a true story for you about the "better man". A father of a boy from my community approached Mr. Stewart about the possibility of meeting his son. The boy had terminal cancer and his only wish was to meet his hero before he died. Mr. Stewart would not even stop to hear him out and just kept walking away while stating, "I just don't have the time". Jeff Gordon was walking nearby and overheard the plea from the father. Gordon, stopped and talked with the father, got his information and seized the moment to really make a difference in the child's life. He called him immediately from the track, and the very next week flew in and spent several hours with the boy face to face. The boy has since past away, but I am sure that he was happier due to Gordon's selflessness, kindness, and generosity. I am sure that every driver has hundreds of these requests per year and he may indeed have been too busy to have helped, but he could of had the decency to pause and listen to the man. So that is your "better man" and hero. A class act all the way!

Go ahead and call me a liar, I could care less.

Glad to see some people out there see what really happened. For all you Tony Stewart lovers, wake up from your delirium and come to grips with the fact that Tony is a childish brat. There is a big differenece between bumping someone and just flat out turning down on them and wrecking them. He is on a freaking race track. People are suppose to race against you not pull over and let you go by just because your name is Tony Stewart. NASCAR (the cowards) should have black flagged Stewart for aggressive driving. I was thrilled to see Montoya take care of him. If NASCAR won't do anything, somebody had to. Bravo Mr. Montoya!

Man...you people are pieces of work. It 's a friggin race and you guys act like someone just called your mother a sloppy fat whore or something. Here you have Bobby B inviting Rick A over for a friendly game of ass whipping, then Rick A gets a little frustrated and throws the, I'm a cop, line in his face, and if that isn't good enough, Bobby B actually apologizes and says he was cranky. Then you have Bob B indicating Smoke is gay, all the while Eddie F apparently is turning himself on with the thought of Danica sticking her crotch in Tony's face. You people should really get a life. Bobby B needs that anger management class Rick A (the cop) referred to. Rick A really should not post comments if he can't take the criticism he gets in return. Eddie F needs to go to a strip club if he wants to see that mess, and Bob B is just an idiot. You all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and count your dam blessings in the meantime!!!

Tony should've driven him into the wall & got out & beat the sh*t outta him, once his chances at winning the race were done. His crew shoulda made a visit to the 42 pit with about a dozen tire irons too.

I thought you might be talking about Dale Burnfart when you were talking about being the biggest crier. When he put someone in the wall it was just a racing incident. Untill it happened to him and the whining began non stop. Bo Ho. Montoya backs his words with action. You bang me I'll bang you.

Good old time NASCAR short track racing mentality.

I remember a few short track fights where I grew up with the drivers duking out on the start finish line after the race.
