Hendrick turns attention to Earnhardt

  • Print

Getting Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s team back on track is Rick Hendrick’s top priority now that Jimmie Johnson has his record fourth consecutive NASCAR championship.

“We’re all over it, and we’ve been all over it,” Hendrick said Tuesday in a conference call. “It’s my primary focus here, starting Monday.”

Johnson gave Hendrick Motorsports its NASCAR record 12th championship in Sunday’s season finale, and Hendrick drivers swept the top three spots in the standings. Mark Martin finished second and won five races this season, while Jeff Gordon finished third and had one victory.

Earnhardt, meanwhile, went winless and was a distant 25th in the final standings in his second season driving for Hendrick.

Hendrick changed Earnhardt’s crew chief midway through the season, and assigned additional engineering support to the No. 88 team. Although his performance began to improve toward the end of the season, bad luck and mechanical problems left Earnhardt with very little to show for his efforts. Earnhardt had just five top-10 finishes all year, and admittedly struggled with his confidence.

“I’ve seen this happen with Jeff Gordon … you just go through these (slumps),” Hendrick said. “We know we can make the team better and it’s frustrating. The driver begins to think that no matter what he does, something is going to happen.

“We’ve had failures, we’ve had wrecks. If it could happen, it happened to that team. It’s just been really frustrating.”

Hendrick, meanwhile, said his 29-year-old niece is doing well after undergoing an emergency liver transplant Sunday in North Carolina.

He missed the race at Homestead-Miami Speedway after flying home Friday night to be with niece Alesha Gainey, who was healthy and headed to a Carolina Panthers game on Thursday night when she suddenly fell ill.

Hendrick said doctors aren’t sure what caused Gainey’s organs to fail, and although the liver transplant was successful, she’s in critical condition because her kidneys aren’t yet functioning.

Gainey is the daughter of Rick Hendrick’s brother, John, who was one of the 10 people killed in a 2004 plane crash. Also killed in the accident was Gainey’s younger twin sisters.

“It was never a doubt in my mind where I needed to be, and where I wanted to be,” Hendrick said of missing the race. “I would have loved to have celebrated with them, but I wasn’t in the frame of mind to celebrate. The good news is, the liver is working, she’s stable and we’re going to have a very good Thanksgiving.”

Maybe JR. needs to start smoking that Bud, instead of drinking it?

I think Dale Jr. is a great race car driver but something has happened to him over the last 5 or 6 years that is really affecting his ability to concentrate on driving his car. I don't know if it is some sort of depression or maybe adult add or if he really just doesn't want to race anymore. Maybe just a lack of confidence. But whatever it is, I hope he figures it out soon. Good luck Dale. Rick Hendrick is definitely the one to have as a boss and friend to help figure things out. I hope next year will be better for Dale but not only in racing but whatever it is that is bothering him on a personal level. And when he does figure it out everyone else should lookout because he IS a great driver.

The problem is JR. He has no talent and with him it's always someone else's fault. i know some little old ladies on I-95 who can out drive him. oh well, there's always the NASCAR SENIOR TOUR. most of the other guy's will be retired by then.

And what is the reasoning for Jr. getting another chance? He has less championships(0), than the Cubs(2). Must be the ultimate insult. Then again, the truth hurts. HEE-HEE

Dale can never be like his father. Would be great to see him with Stewart, but that's not going to make him any better. Hendricks has the best motors and Dale has too many commercials to shoot, and not enough time to improve his driving. He's rich from the commercials though, it's just tough for his fans to see him lose all of the time. Maybe he should try the nationwide series, except then he would have to try to beat Kyle and that's not going to happen. ask Edwards.

I'm not a Jr fan, but good luck to him and his fans next year. Another article pointed out that they need to work on what the problem is... but the first step is figuring out what that is. Sure there's been some 'bad luck', but it doesn't come close to explaining the mediocre performance.

I still think the guy is way too distracted, and with Danica Patrick supposedly going to race for JR Motorsports... hoo boy.

If it takes all of Hendrick's attention to get Jr on track, what does that say anyway? JJ won the Daytona 500 pole and had 3 wins in his rookie year at HMS (someone correct me if my memory's wrong), and he did that as a virtual nobody vs. being a superstar.

I think Dale should make himself a dirt track on his land and practice sliding around a COT so he is comfortable running different lines around the track. I've also wondered if he would be more comfortable on another team like Stewart-Haas. To me, Hendrick seems more up tight than others, but I don't know anyone there. In open wheel, sometimes drivers are "loaned" out. So, I might have moved Dale for a year and tried to keep Brad.

I understand that Kevin. just think that more points for winning races should be awarded. A DNF should count against you, but not as much as a win should help you. When you have DNF's it could be mechanical. But also could very well be because of someone else faulty driving causing an accident and it becomes something the driver has no fault in. when you win the races, you did what your supposed to do and should be awarded more points appropriately. When you win several races and 8 or 9 people that won fewer to zero races make the chase and your excluded. Just seems wrong. And the monopoly giants in hendricks and gibbs??? Racing salary cap?...lmao. Good day

I'm actually embarrassed to be a Jeff Gordon fan. To see him get his ass whooped every single race by JJ has really made me sick. And all he has to say about it is, "I'm so proud of those guys and that team, they deserve everything they get." Ugh, how lame. It's the same story every race. This should be Gordon's second straight winless season. He got lucky with the late caution and Edwards pit crew messing up. I'm no longer a fan. I'm turning to Kyle Busch, he's the only one that's got the talent and balls to beat Johnson. Come on Kyle! The entire Nascar community needs you!!!! Beat Jimmy for us!

kirk r, you must have never heard Jr. give a press conference. He has NEVER compared himself to his father nor has he made excuses for not winning with Hendrick. He has gone on record saying that it's ridiculous that his team hasn't done better with all the resources available to them. The media wants so badly for him to be as good as his father and that will just never be the case, and I guess some ignorant fans blame that on him.

you also have to finish races to get in the chase while yes Kyle won some races he also didnt finish some gotta do both. The points system rewards ppl for winning it also punishes for getting that DNF.

It is a sad day that JR. gets "all" of the Hendrick attention to try and get him to win. JR. allready has extra engineers, all the information from the other cars and still cann't win. Yes he has had some bad luck but most of it has been of his own making. He needs to MAN UP and admit to the world that he is not the driver that his father was , or for that matter the driver that Jimmy, Jeff and Mark are. It is time for JR to go back to the bar he owns and concentrate on it. That way he can sit around and tell lyes about how good he is and the fools in there are drunk enough that they will believe him.

Racing has gone monolopy on us. If your not a Hendricks or Gibbs driver, you will not get the title. Thats like the Nats trying to beat the crankees in MLB. Too deep of pockets on one side and next thing you know you end up with tainted purchased titles that really destroy the sports. And the points scam. Need more awarded for winners of the races. How can Kyle win more races than almost everybody, yet not get in the chase? Doesn't seem right. Kyle will be in it next year as well as Hamlin, and Lagono. Thinking maybe JJ has won his final cup and Gibbs racing will be in the thick of it next year. Need to fix the points thing though as it's starting to look like the BCS in college football. And Montoya...your toast buddy. Smoke is going tear your sh*t up for that.

    JamesK,

While the NASCAR world (specifically Junior Nation) may not realize he is an average driver, I think Rick does and has all along. I think he is perfectly content having the three top drivers and the undisputed most popular driver in his garage. Rick may publically state he is going to focus on the team and shuffle crew chiefs occasionally, but that is simply for the benefit of fans and sponsers. He knows what Junior is - an average driver, a fan favorite, a media darling, and a money generating machine.

One of these days, Rick and the NASCAR world is going to realize that Junior is just not that great. He is basically an average race car driver. Just because your name is Earnhardt does not make you a great driver. When Junior was at DEI, all his problems were blamed on Teresa. After two years with Hendrick he is doing even worse. I don't see the media blaming that on Rick Hendrick. For what it is worth, here are Junior's two biggest problems: 1. He doesn't know enough about the car to really be able to tell his crew chier what it needs; and 2. He is just plain too damn hard on his equipment!
