Fort Hood soldiers honored again at Texas race

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Fort Hood soldiers played a prominent role in NASCAR’s prerace ceremonies just 170 miles from the site of shootings that left 13 dead at the Army post.

There were 40 Fort Hood soldiers displaying the American flag during the national anthem Sunday. The number was supposed to be 45, but track officials said five soldiers scheduled to attend were among the 29 injured in Thursday’s attack.

A moment of silence was observed for the fourth time during the weekend. The other observances came during the Nationwide and truck series races, and Sprint Cup qualifying.

A U.S. Army logo with the words “God Bless Our Fort Hood Troops” was painted on the infield grass Friday.

Kudos to NASCAR for doing something our president failed to put a very high priority on doing.

We have just had our rememberance Sunday here in the U.K..I thought of your fallen heroes at Fort Hood. The British Army had a similar shocking action by a 'friendly'afgan when our soldiers were training them to look after their own country. The word HEROES just doesnt seem big enough when describing what our service men and women are doing to protect all of us from harm!!!!

Kudos to you Ditto for such a classy response to such an UNclassy person.

And of course MAJOR kudos to Nascar for handling a horrendous situation so well. As we all know there were to be 5 more of our soldiers there but unfortunately they in the line fire on our own turf. This is so sad. We worry about our soldiers when they leave the U.S. but rarely do we worry about this sort of thing here in our backyard.

I agree we should keep all of them in our prayers.

I have been army for over 16 years and love the relationship nascar has with troops. I have received free infield Tix to Talladega, Charlotte, and Rockingham. I have met and spoken to several drivers Mcmurray traded a unit patch for a shirt w/ a crew member, Kesneth... actually had like an hour conversation with his father when we won the cup at the rock, Gordon, The king, Harvick gave me a cap. I have participated in flyovers of rockingham as well .... I have the privilege to fly helicopters for the Army. I an a few weeks away from going on my 4th deployment and am proud to do so! I applaud NASCAR and the NFL for all the support we recieive from the military.

As far as mikes comment... well this is the greatest country in the world and one of the great things is that you can express your opinion no matter what it is. I will continue to pray for you just like I will pray for our fallen heroes.

I agree with Skinsfan---NASCAR's Patriotism is above and beyond most organizations. I really and truly appreciate what they do!!

    @ Post #6 (Michael):

I come here and post to enjoy good coversation and get other opinions on various topics--I have never once cussed, called someone a name, or belittled anyone for their opinion but to you I will make this one time exception to my rule--Pal you are a complete @$$hole idiot...

I have served this great country for the past 22 years and still proudly serving--It's people like you that have such a small mind and more than likely you are an uneducated racist SOB...

Do us all a favor move to another country! Or better yet--if you have the balls go see your local recruiter, join, grab a weapon and place yourself in Iraq or Afghanistan---This wouldn't happen, I know, because your a punk @$$ coward!

Props to Nascar and Eddie Gossage for the fitting tributes to our military yesterday. I attended the race and it was cool to see the B-52 flyover and the Chinook flying into TMS to deliver the pace car. But it was somber for the moment of silence and national anthem.

BTW, special props for having the TCU Marching Band play the National Anthem.

This is for the pathetic excuse for a human being called Michael. It is a shame that a***hole didn't shoot you instead of those real men (and women) putting their lives on the line for all of us, even trash like you. Do us all a favor and go away. God Bless everyone at Fort Hood and thank you for all you do

    Michael,

My husband fights for your a$$ daily in the military. We just left Fort Hood less than a year ago. There are thousand of brave men and women there protecting your a$$ in Afghanistan and Iraq. I think you need to show a little bit more respect for our fallen soldiers who were killed by one of our own.

To the rest of you all we can do is pray for those that are still in ICU and for those that are still having to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq, now with all this other crap on their minds. This incident makes it just as hard if not harder.

Michael, you sorry Son of a B*tch, why dont you get the f*ck out of this great country if you have no respect for men and women that were murdered by some a$$hole. It doesnt matter that they were soldiers they were human beings. You should care just because of that. The fact that soldiers were gunned down by one of there own is horrible. You shoud be ashamed you even spoke today.

Our hearts go out to all the victims at Ft Hood. But sad to say we may never know all the truth on what happened and why it happen. The Army like all the other services will take care of their own, quitely, sadly and with dignaty( sorry spelling). This man, not his religion, will have to answer to the Army and that my friends may not be pretty.

Before NASCAR, the NFL was the most militaristic sports organization with regards to the armed forces. I'm old enough to remember when the special teams were known as "the bomb squads", and a long downfield pass by the quarterback was referred to as "throwing the bomb". The offensive and defensive lineplay was known as "trench warfare".

The escalation of the Vietnam War, the demonstrations resulting therefrom, and the events of May 4, 1970, led to charges that the NFL was cultivating a "culture of violence that glorified war". Ergo the language changes in the game.

Along came NASCAR, to fill the vacuum.
