Famed No. 3 returning to Daytona in truck series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP)—The famed No. 3 is returning to Daytona International Speedway, and without an Earnhardt behind the wheel.

Austin Dillon, a grandson of Richard Childress, is bringing one of NASCAR’s most prominent numbers back to the sport’s most storied track.

Dillon will race a black No. 3 in next week’s Camping World Truck Series season opener at Daytona. He will be the second to drive a car with the number that essentially has been retired since Dale Earnhardt’s death on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. drove a blue No. 3 Chevrolet in the Nationwide race in February 2002, and took it to Victory Lane.

The 20-year-old Dillon knows the history of the number well, growing up watching the Earnhardts turn the 2 1/2 -mile, high-banked track into their personal stomping ground.

“A lot of prestige and history goes with it,” said Dillon, a freshman at High Point University who plans to major in communications. “I feel like if we run well with it, it’s going to make things a lot easier. I’m going to put the pressure on myself to go out there and do well and see what we can do.”

Childress owns the rights to the number and has been hesitant to put it back on the track since Earnhardt’s death. But he gave Dillon the go-ahead. Dillon wore No. 3 playing baseball and basketball as a child and has raced with it on the side of his car ever since.

“I love running it,” Dillon said. “I’m comfortable with the number and excited to run it in the truck series. It comes with a lot of different things— media, fans—and people love it. It’s something that’s really close to many people’s hearts. It’s close to mine and it’s close to my family’s, and I feel very fortunate to be able to run it.”

Dillon made his NASCAR debut in 2008 and has started eight races in the truck and Nationwide series. He drove the No. 3 truck twice in the truck series last season (Iowa and New Hampshire), but he expects Daytona will be different.

How does Childress feel about it?

“I think he’s excited for it, too,” Dillon said. “He’s glad to see it out on the track again. It kind of puts a smile on his face when he sees it running. Fans know that, and they’ll be excited for it, too.”

HARVICK ARRIVES: Kevin Harvick arrived at Daytona much later than planned and had bad news awaiting him.

Clint Bowyer wrecked Harvick’s primary car for the Budweiser Shootout, forcing Harvick into a backup car for Saturday night’s exhibition race that kicks off Speedweeks.

“I’m just glad I didn’t have to be the one to do it,” Harvick said Friday.

Harvick said he was feeling considerably better a day after he missed media day and two practice sessions because of flulike symptoms.

RAINED OUT: Rain canceled two practice sessions Friday at Daytona. The final ARCA practice was washed out, and so was the second of two Sprint Cup qualifying practices. Eight Cup cars failed to turn laps at all when the first qualifying practice was called because of heavy showers. Those cars will get extra track time Saturday morning.

It could be the last bit of poor weather during Speedweeks.

Extended forecasts are calling for a 30 percent chance of rain Wednesday and next Friday, but the weather should be otherwise perfect for racing.

PENSKE DONATES: Penske Corp. has donated more than $1 million worth of diesel-powered flatbed trucks to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.

The trucks are expected to be instrumental in mobilizing food and supplies in Haiti.

“Their generous contribution is an example of what the private sector can do to help Haiti rebuild and recover from the massive earthquake, and I’m grateful for their leadership,” former President Bill Clinton said in a statement.

NASCAR team owner Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Corp., called the tragedy in Haiti “almost unimaginable.”

STARS ALIGNED: Two Juniors will be part of pre-race activities for the Daytona 500.

Three-time Grammy winner and actor Harry Connick Jr. was tabbed to sing the national anthem before the Feb. 14 season opener, and former Daytona 500 champion Junior Johnson was selected as grand marshal.

Connick sang at NASCAR’s season-ending awards ceremony in 2003. Johnson’s appearance, which includes delivering the “Gentlemen, start your engines” command, is to mark the 50th anniversary of his 1960 Daytona 500 victory.

The track already announced that country music star Tim McGraw will perform a pre-race concert.

i am and will always be a earnhardt fan. started pulling for that 3 when i was a lil kid way back when he drove a yellow and blue car i couldnt have been 7 or 8. shhhew i sure do miss that 3, and long to see it back at the track. I still get tears in my eyes thinking about it. that might be what alot of us need to put DE to rest and get on is to see that 3 back on the track. Im all for it i dont think richard would put someone behind it if he didnt think they would do it justice. one day we may even see a earnhardt win in it.

later on, Skinner drove the #3 truck. But in the first race (Phoenix if i recall), Dale drove it. i do not remember how many races he drove it in, but he did in the first. skinner took over after Dale drove the #3 Goodwrench truck. Look it up! i remember watching the race. and to bring more fans into the stands for those first few races, there were many Cup drivers that filled the seats.

Dale Sr Never ran the Truck series. It was Mike Skinner who drove the Black Goodwrench #3 Chevy for RCR. Dale Sr Owned the #16 Truck that Ron Hornaday Ran for him and started DEI with.

NASCAR may "own" the #3, but Childress has kept paying the "lease" fee on it since Dale died. i remember going to see Dale drive when i was a little kid. i even remember him driving a #2 Ford, there cant be many people that were a bigger Dale fan than i was. i remember when he died, it took me almost 2 seasons to quit looking for the 3 out there, then i would remember he wasnt with us anymore. but whoever below said that dale never raced a 3 in the trucks is incorrect. Dale raced the #3 Goodwrench truck the very first year of the trucks. it was black and it had the trademark 3 on it. it is Childress' number to use as he sees fit. i dont think dale would mind. i have loved it wen Jr drove the 3 with the little Jr. in red on the 3 at the upper right corner. get over it people. i dont think dale would care. he knew that racing was a business. i might be a little bothered if it was a black chevy goodwrench or yellow wrangler car with a 3, but i dont believe we will see that for a long time; if ever. lets just hope we have a good season that isnt just follow the leader, and we have another close race for the championship, IM READY FOR SOME RACIN'!!!!

Remember how stupid Richard Petty's car looked with #44 on it with Rick Wilson driving? They should
take a page from USAC they could learn a thing or too from a racing body thats been around a hell of alot longer then Nascar !

Nascat doesn't need to retire any numbers. Earnhardt himself would think it foolish to make a fuss about
a number. They didnn't retire the number after Fireball Roberts was killed. Run it in cup or run it in the mudd.

They should retire the #3 as there is no Childress or Earnhardt good enough to use it.

I seem to remember someone - right after Dale Sr. was killed - saying that NASCAR "owns" the numbers. I think the number 3 is merely in the control of Richard Childress, same as 43 is controlled by Petty.
Anyone else remember that? Therefore, NASCAR could retire that number if they wanted to.

Anyone who thinks Richard Childress shouldn't use the #3 needs to learn some NASCAR history. Childress ran the #3 for YEARS before Dale Earnhardt and Ricky Rudd. Has the world fallen off its axis since Dale Jr. stopped running the #8? When you see Kenseth in the #17 do you think about Darrell Waltrip? NO! When you see Denny Hamlin in the #11 do you think about all the years Junior Johnson ran #11? NO! It's just not a big deal.

Austion Dillon is Childress's grandson. At least he's keeping family in the car. Dillon has already drove a #3 car a couple of years ago, in another series, owned by Childress. Listen, it's been 9 years since Dale sadly passed on, it's time to let go. I'm a big Dale Earnhardt Sr fan, I've moved on. There will NEVER be another Dale Earnhardt, Davey Allison, or any of the other Nascar drivers who have passed on. Richard Childress has the rights to the #3 to use as he sees fit, he kept off the track for this long. He has my blessing to bring it back. Just think how he feels when he walks into the shop and sees that famous #3 again, I'm sure he has more memories of the man who made it famous, more memories than any of us put togehter have.... If Austin Dillon can drive, then let it be.... GO #3!!!!!

if everyone remembers richard childress said that no one but an earnhardt would be behind the wheel of the #3 and he should do what he said instead of going back on his word.if it had't been for earnhardt he wouldn't be where he is today.and i could care less how much money he can make offf the #3,it's still not earnhardt.he could go with 03,and i think all earnhardt fans should stand together on this subject, once a earnhardt fan always a fan.

I think Childress did the right thing by not using the number 3 after Big Dale got killed. I'm a little squeamish about using it in the trucks, not just because of the actual number, but going back to the black paint scheme as well. It's true Big E didnt drive in the trucks, but lets be real, I dont care what racing series it is, or who'se behind the wheel, you see a black 3 who comes to mind? I have a lot of respect for Childress, and I do believe he didn't come to the decision to use the number again lightly. I know numbers arent retired and all that, but I just dont want to see it used again. Dale Jr. might have gotten away with using it, but he has shown he's more interested in money than in family. I lost all respect for Jr. when he left DEI and went to Hendricks instead of Childress. Nuff said.
It will be good to see the black 3 on the track again, but without Big E behind the wheel, it wont mean much. Hell of a lot of pressure to put on a kid just starting out though.
    3 Forever
