Tom Logano apologizes for run-in with Biffle

FONTANA, Calif. (AP)—Tom Logano was back at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday to watch his son race in the Pepsi 500 a day after having his credential pulled following a run-in with driver Greg Biffle.

Tom Logano confronted Biffle at the end of Saturday’s Nationwide race—a race his son won—after Biffle nudged Joey Logano into the wall while passing for the lead on lap 50.

Biffle hinted at the manuever shortly before it happened, a move that apparently angered the elder Logano. While his son celebrated in Victory Lane, Tom Logano approached Biffle’s car as he pulled off the track and made at least one hand gesture during a short verbal confrontation.

A NASCAR official then pulled Logano’s credential. He met with both Nationwide and Sprint Cup series officials following the incident, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said.

Tom Logano was able to attend the race after applying for a single-event pass. He had the pass tucked into his shirt pocket while talking to Joey shortly before the race but had no comment on the incident as he made his way to a viewing box above pit road.

Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs said Tom Logano was apologetic while talking to team officials.

“There was an issue on pit road and NASCAR addressed it,” Gibbs said. “He went and talked to the guy at NASCAR (Joe Balash) yesterday. When I talked to him, he was contrite and apologetic and he said he messed up on it.”

There was no drama between the two camps during Sunday’s race even though they were side-by-side in the pit box.

Joey Logano finished 14th, while Biffle was 20th after a late collision with Kasey Kahne.

BUSCH SIDELINED: Kyle Busch’s tough 2009 season can’t seem to end fast enough.

First he didn’t make the Chase, then Sunday, he left the race after just 61 laps due to the flu.

Busch had feeling ill for several days and left the Nationwide early Saturday because of a fever despite qualifying second and quickly jumping to the lead at a track where he has dominated over the years.

He hoped the break would help him regroup for Sunday, but said he felt even worse when he woke up Sunday morning and appeared to be a ghostly shade of white during the drivers’ meeting.

“I don’t want to jeopardize myself or anybody else,” Busch said. “I’m going to try and get healed up and get ready for Charlotte.”

Busch’s No. 18 Toyota was sent to the back of the field for an engine change but was 19th when he left the race. Gilliland, who started the day driving the No. 71 for TRG Motorsports, filled in capably for Busch, finishing 24th.

Gilliland will run in a fourth car for Joe Gibbs Racing next week at Charlotte.

WHO NEEDS DANICA?: Don’t tell Rick Hendrick that NASCAR needs Danica Patrick.

Hendrick said while he’d be intrigued if the IndyCar driver opted to make a move to stock cars, he doesn’t think the sport needs her to thrive.

“I don’t think she’s important to our future,” Hendrick said. “I mean, she would add a new dimension, maybe if she participated in the Nationwide Series or Cup Series one day. But I don’t think that’s going to make any difference where NASCAR is.”

Patrick has reportedely agreed to an extension to remain in IndyCars with Andretti Green Racing, but she has spoken to Kelley Earnhardt about running at least part time for JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series.

WHERE IS EVERYBODY?: NASCAR hoped moving the second California race from Labor Day weekend to October would help it become a better draw in the crowded southern California sports calendar.

Despite near perfect conditions with temperatures hovering around 70 degrees, there were plenty of empty spaces in the stands at the 2-mile oval, where the grandstand seats 92,000.

That didn’t seem to bother track president Gillian Zucker. She was pleased with the turnout, particularly in the lower seats, which she said were sold out.

“We deserve a race in the Chase and we deserve two races at this race track,” Zucker said. “The fans have responded but there are other factors that play into this.”

Zucker said the track is considering shortening one of the two annual races from 500 miles to 400 miles and did little to hide the fact she’d like to swap race dates with Phoenix. The first California race is run in February, right after the Daytona 500 while Phoenix runs in April.

“Everybody knows that we’ve had some challenges with weather during (February),” she said.

SEEING STARS: Actor Kelsey Grammar isn’t sure what Dr. Frasier Crane would think of NASCAR racing, but the sitcom veteran is quickly becoming a fan.

Grammar served as Grand Marshal for Sunday’s race during his first NASCAR event, something he’d done previously at the Indianapolis 500. While not exactly bitten by the racing bug, he’s not a stranger to racing. He competed in the Long Beach Grand Prix once.

“I have an affinity for it, if no skill,” Grammar said. “I would love to race the fastest cars in the world … it’s a very heady trip being there.”

Grammar’s day went a little better than pop star Jesse McCartney, who forgot a verse while singing the national anthem.

ROUSH ADDS BUESCHER: Roush Fenway Racing has signed Chris Buescher to a driver development contract.

The 16-year-old Buescher has spent the 2009 season competing part-time in the ARCA RE/MAX Series for Roulo Brothers Racing. He had three top-fives and five top-10 finishes in seven starts and set a series record when he became the youngest pole winner in ARCA history at Salem Speedway. Buescher wrapped up the season with a sixth-place finish on Saturday night at Rockingham.

“I’ve worked really hard and it’s taken a long time, but I’m very glad to be where I am,” said Buescher. “Roush is one of the top teams out there and to be associated with them is an honor. This year was a big step. I’ve learned a lot this year and am really looking forward to next year.

i dont think Danica really knows how hard a 3000 pound race car is to control,at the speeds nascar permits.Take juan pablo,he is a great driver,it took him awhile, learning the cars ,tracks, crew,it takes time, the nation series is for her,i think the trucks would be to tough, that series is competitive, and a mans series....stay were you are and grow, that series needs your talent and you need them....

Danica would fit in great most of the young Cup drivers are pu$$ys anyway but I have to admit she has a much better @ss you have to remember it isnt about racing anymore its about money and looking pretty like Kasey and Joey I started to say Jr. but he looks like a redheaded step child. Cant believe you sorry @sses dont know what a shovelhead is. As for Jr. he has the best stats money can buy, ask Jimmy Spencer he came out and said Nascar gave Jr. more HP.at the restrictor races and then apologized out of respect for for Sr. he drives for the best team in racing and still cant win $hit have to take up for Shovelhead on this one!

I dont think the transition from a 1600 lb car with a 213 cubic inch engine putting out 650 hp that goes 240 mph to a 3200 lb car with a 358 cubic inch engine putting out 850 hp that goes 200 mph is that big of a deal. you cant get the tires tangled up in the pack, most races are follow the leader and the corners are even banked a bunch! Its mainly equipment driven, anyone ( except for Jr) with good equipment can compete. Those with lousy equipment ( LaBonte) can be great drivers but dont have much of a chance. It would take a few years to get used to the differences, but Danica would bring more money and publicity. Have any NASCAR drivers made it in Indycars? or F1 ( 780 hp in 1300lbs)?

    Hey Kevin,
I see that you are still having to explain your name to people.....lol. Some people know nothing about american classics and need a road map for everything. If you used the term Electra Glide they would probably think of a excercise treadmill.

    Michael,
Your post was about as useful as a piece of used toilet paper, may we suggest getting over your severe masturbation addiction, it seems to be leading to extreme fits of anger which in turn is leading to your mindless posts on here.

    Now for the real topics......

Logano's daddy should have kept his nose out of things, Joey wanted to play big boy by going to Nascar, now he can stand up for himself like a big boy should.

Busch got sick, so what , this happens to people from time to time. His season already went in the capper so it's no big issue. Let's just hope he doesn't have H1N1.

Who cares if Danica Patrick races in Nascar or not, she won't make or break the sport, Nascar is already doing a good enough job at breaking it themselves. This is a move that is probably 2-3 years away anyhow so no use getting wet spots in your fruit of the looms about it.

I am not sure if im alone on this thought or not . I pull for #88 and most chevrolet teams with the exception of #48 I have noticed that if you go back to the Chevy Monte Carlo from his 2 bush / naitionwide series championship years up to his 2004 year in cup he found grooves easy. He looked like a veteran driver . Ever since he went to the ful Darth Vader looking helment and stopped using the old style with goggles it makes him a seem very uncomfortable . I realize he has won several times with the newer style for him but, is closterphobia and conditioning a issue ? Im a #88 fan. Im not bashing him at all. I am just concerned . He reminds of a heavyweight boxer who is great for the first 10 rounds then is back on his heels. I blame 90% of it on the cot cars. He is one of many who used to win and run great .Look at the dominat stats. I also think they should jerk those silly plates off at the plate tracks. I think that if you would take out the first 15 rows and engineer newer fence and fan barrier ideas. Dont get me wrong , If a car flew in the stands nascar may never recover. I realize that. Or make the plates a tad bigger and incress the horsepower by about 30 to 40 and change the rear spoilers. I dont mean to suggest that the speeds should be in the Rusty Wallace tire test at Talladega 223 to 232 MPH range. Tune it so the cars could show who has the real deal motors . Take the puppet strings off. I say this with the drivers agreement saftey wise. Make the pole average lap of 195 to 198 range. With that configuration nascar would as well as the track lose money where the stands used to be. But, You dont sell out. So, that would put tails in the stands to see the excitment. SELL OUT, SELL OUT
