Allmendinger given breath test before practice

TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP)—NASCAR driver A.J. Allmendinger was required to take a breath test before Friday’s practice at Talladega Superspeedway following his arrest on a drunken driving charge.

Allmendinger was arrested by Mooresville (N.C.) police early Thursday morning. He was placed on probation by NASCAR through the end of the season and said he had no problem when series officials asked him to take the test.

“I know what I’ve done,” Allmendinger said. “I respect the punishment and everything that I have to do to gain the trust back of NASCAR and everybody that’s out there racing with me. It’s not the best feeling in the world, but at the same point I respect that I have to go do it.”

Mooresville police said Allmendinger, who drives the No. 44 Dodge for Richard Petty Motorsports, failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over shortly after leaving a bar.

Allmendinger registered 0.08 on the breath test, the police report said. Under North Carolina law, that means his license will be automatically suspended for 30 days.

On Friday, RPM fined Allmendinger $10,000, which will be donated to charity. The team also put him on probation through the end of next season.

Allmendinger said he hasn’t spoken to Petty since the incident. The seven-time NASCAR champion—who shunned alcohol sponsorship during his career— released a statement on Thursday saying he was “disappointed” in Allmendinger’s actions.

Allmendinger enters Sunday’s race 25th in points and is considered part of RPM’s long-term plans. Team officials told The Associated Press that Allmendinger was going to be moved into Petty’s famed No. 43 next season. Best Buy is expected to sponsor the car. Allmendinger said he’s optimistic the incident won’t mar his future prospects.

“Hopefully, I can go out there and show people that I can learn from it and people do get second chances,” he said.

His teammates aren’t particularly concerned about Allmendinger’s mistake costing RPM. Neither is Budweiser, who is the primary sponsor for RPM star Kasey Kahne.

“Richard Petty Motorsports is a great partner in our efforts to promote responsible drinking, and they have communicated to us their own disappointment regarding this matter,” said Kathy Casso, vice president of corporate social responsibility for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “We are adamantly opposed to drunk driving and any incident of it is a serious issue. We hope this will serve as a reminder of the importance of making responsible choices.”

A couple of Allmendinger’s fellow drivers don’t believe NASCAR needs to set stricter sanctions for drivers who are charged with driving under the influence.

“This sport is dictated by our fan base and our sponsors, and if you’re actions off the track impact that enough, you’re going to get penalized and to me, that penalty is far going to outweigh anything the league or the series can do,” said four-time champion Jeff Gordon.

Brian Vickers added he as “no problem” with the current standards.

“It’s almost a self-policing system,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s not going to be team owner or NASCAR that’s going to be the harshest on the driver or the crew member, it’s going to be the sponsor. In this kind of corporate environment, it’s going to come down to the sponsor.”

Actually Gregg ,I meant they are picking their fights they choose to deal with.I agree it wasn't clear.Absolutely not ,am I ever agreeing that drinking and driving is cool..I just feel the penalty should always be the same regardless of whom it's forced on..I don't feel that all the drivers are looked upon the same when it comes down to being penalized..and I do feel that Helton,France and yes O'bama could All be doing a better job !

I drank and drove when I was younger and then one night my fathers truck broke down after leaving my home and he called my phone to jump start him. I had not had nything to drink I drove out to meet him besides the Highway to jump his truck well off of the road...and Boom we were run over by a carload of drunks. My father was killed and I became disabled. NOW, I will report anyone I see drunk and driving, It's an indiscriminate loaded weapon. I'm not a hypocrit..I just grew up and decided to quit drinking for good that was 25 years ago. Alcohol kills more people than drugs. Drunk drivers should be prosecuted to the full extint of the law and the people that serve a drunk more alcohol should be liable also!

When Brian France was caught driving under the influence of alcohol he was given a pass by the officers..When Richard Petty was Allmendinger's age he did way worst than this..When he was an adult running for local office he deliberately ran over a guy going down the highway.Hypocrites is what we call people that think they have done No wrong when in fact they are no different..There is no telling how many times Richard Petty has been on 220 driving while drinking !There is no telling how many time he has been pulled and Oh,Sorry Mr.Petty.Didn't know it was you ! Seems,France and Helton are trying to keep up with O'bama and fking up Everything we have had in the past to enjoy..How would Petty have felt in his early days had the city of Randleman taken $10,000 from his checking account..He must be getting Dementia........

Someone asked if Waltrip did a breathalyzer test after the Uturn hit. He did and blew a .06. I think they should also be having him doing tests before each race too. Waltrip is twice the size (height) then 'dinger. If they drank the same amount, 'dinger would blow a higher number then Waltrip. I live in the Mooresville area and know where both incidents happened. Waltrip's happened on a much busier area and time then 'dinger's did. 'dingers was down the road from a couple of places that are open that late at night, and on a night that he was pretty much the only one on the road.

They should do a breathalizer on all drivers before the race and have random drug tests after (mandatory for the top 5 finishers!

Back in the nineties Richard Petty bumped a guy on the road when he was drunk. He said he was in a hurry and the guy was going too slow. Petty, if anyone should understand and leave it be and let Dinger slide, unless he does it again..

Holy NASCAR has to show their responsible side and make a dick out of Dinger. What a joke. Hypocrites. A breath test before practice? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard NAS(stock? not.)CAR do. Until next week. NASCAR trying to set examples and save face make them look like idiots when they show no consistency in punishments. Set some punishments in writing beforehand and stick to them completely. Quit making stuff up as you go to appease people with your hypocritical responses to situations like this.

Yeah this is stupid. Now they're gonna treat him like some an alcoholic/ addict who has a problem which is completely unnecessary. .08 isn't even really intoxicated and should not be considered illegal, like people are saying, it's just a way for law enforcement to earn money.

A breath test prrior to practice. What next? Officials doing a full cavity search prior to tech instpection? Nascar's wanting to make an impression on the rest of the drivers at 'Dinger's expence. Typical nascar.

The whole stinkin' thing is hypocritical. Drunk driving is dumb. Period. At one time or another, there are many of us who did it at least once in our lives. Stupid. Lesson learned. My problem is the fines, probation, etc., breathalizers at the track! Come on! Do they give Dale Jr. breathalizers before he goes out on the track? How many of you have seen Jr. downing an icy cold one after the race talking about going and hanging with the fellas? I have. Yes, Dinger did something stupid and got on the road, away from the track, after drinking alcohol. Does that make him an alcoholic? No. NASCAR is simply trying to make an example of him the same as they are determined to make an example of Mayfield. Only I wonder if they've figured out a way to make the breath test show a false positive?

I'd rather ride with 'Dinger sporting a .08 than my wife when she is sober! AT least when he bump-drafts he knows what he is doing!!

Tell me 'Dinger driving home with a couple of drinks is in any way worse than a teenager texting while driving?

Our national insanity over alcohol is ridiculous.

This is a stupid exchange.. Everybody here has done it, it's part of our culture.. I don't do it because I've learned, and I believe AJ has learned as well.. More than one member of the France family has been linked to such a problem.. There's even a Crown Royal ad right next to this... AJ is a really good kid, and that cop sux.. There were other ways to deal with .08.. You don't have to ruin someones life...

To Shovelhead Kevin (post #34): Exactly. No DUI should be swept under the rug. I will give Allmendinger the benefit of the doubt that he was probably a bit frustrated by his bad finish at Martinsville. Now that he is on the radar screen, justified or not, he will have to maintain a low profile for the rest of the season. A good finish on Sunday might make things better for him. Nice talking to you.

Maybe Michael Waltrip should be given a breathalyzer as well....the u turn incident, the wrecked SUV, bumpdrafting jj but most incriminating: his pi$$ poor driving for the last couple of years. Michael needs a new tag line..." I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than have a frontal lobotomy".
