Jimmie Johnson wrecks on 3rd lap in Texas

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—Jimmie Johnson crashed on the third lap of the NASCAR race at Texas, where he was trying to move closer to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Sprint Cup season championship.

The series points leader was coming out of the Turn 2 on the third lap Sunday when Sam Hornish got loose and made contact.

Johnson scraped the outside wall and appeared to possibly save his car before he was hit again by Hornish. That knocked Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet hard into the inside wall.

There was heavy damage to both cars.

Crew members were working to replace the front and rear suspensions of Johnson’s car, and making other repairs. It looked like a makeshift body shop in the garage area, with crew members from teammate Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. helping out. All were scurrying around a car that was basically being rebuilt.

Chad Knaus, Johnson’s crew chief, slammed his fist on the team’s pit box when the accident happened. A few minutes later, he could be heard on the radio calmly telling his crew to take their time and get it right.

Johnson came into the race with a 184-point lead over teammate Mark Martin and 192 over Gordon, the polesitter, though he could not have clinched Sunday even with a victory. There are two races left after Texas.

Kyle Busch is in first place. Not in the chase though so I hope Stewart wins todays race. I also like the Martin story this year. But Busch may pull off the sweep as he won the other two races this weekend and it would be just great for him to sweep all three races while working his first race with the new crew chief. Go Kyle....come on Stewart.

Either way, it's going to be either Johnson, Gordon or Martin to win the championship. My bet's Gordon because he knows how to do it, and what's one more championship for him to reach the goal of 8? I know he can do it.

I hope this happens again next week. I'm losing interest in NASCAR though.... Who's going to win the championship? Jimmie Johnson.... who's going to win it next year.... Jimmie Johnson.... And the year after that? Jimmie Johnson.... lets face it, there is no competition anymore.... just hand the wins over to Hendrick Motorsports and the Sprint Cups to Jimmie Johnson and lets all watch the ratings fall. Oh, wait.... you hear that? Sounds like a whole bunch of Honda motors coming by at faster speeds and providing closer championships that go down to the last lap of the last race for the past 5 seasons..... sounds like the IRL making a comeback. NASCAR better fix the competition, or , like myself, the fans may start looking at other forms of racing that have better competition (IRL, ALMS, Rolex Series, Speed GT, Speed Touring Car, F1).... I'm honestly done with cars that dont look like the ones you can buy, and motors we can only dream of. Mazda runs the 1.3L Rotary motor in the Rolex series, and still competes with the 3.6L Boxer 6 of Porsche. Infact, Mazda won the Rolex GT Cup 2 years in a row. Lets run some REAL stock cars.... that will solve all the issues.... long live the HEMI!!!

much as I don't care for J J a person has to admit this is proof of the major unfixable flaw in the chase, univolved drivers, if NASCAR were serious about the chase only the cars inthe chase would race the chase races. But since it's all about the money you will always have a Hornish or Blaney causing a wreck, taking out contenders, and exposing the current chase format for the fraud it is.

Hey, happy day, Johnson crashed what could make the day better, I know Gordon crashes too. I like that Johnson is in the garage and we still have to hear all about him. Stupid Johnson.

This should make the chase more entertaining IF the other contenders gain some much needed ground in todays race.
