We love you, Dale! Even in cardboard form!

You know, NASCAR can put out all the data it wants on how it's the nation's fastest-growing sport, with 75 bajillion fans who all have doctorates or whatever, and then all it takes is one story like this to cement the old "nothing but crazy redneck fans" image:

FREDERICK, Md. (AP)—A 42-year-old man was charged Monday with stealing a 5-foot cardboard likeness of the late NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt from a Wawa convenience store, where the cutout was being used to promote a candy bar.

(Please note, the image at right is NOT that of the thief. That is, however, a Dale Sr. cardboard likeness.)

A couple things to note here: first of all, a five-foot Dale? Come on! Shouldn't Dale be, like, seven feet tall, spittin' whiskey, with flames coming out of his eyes? Second, the cardboard cutout was valued at less than $100. That's a serious fan there, risking incarceration -- and permanent public humiliation -- for a cheap-ass cardboard cutout. (Unless he thought Dale was speaking to him ... anybody check that angle?)

Oh, and you'll never guess what they're going to do with the cutout now that it's returned: "It will be auctioned off for charity, with the proceeds donated to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore." What the ... ? How much is a cardboard cutout really going to bring? As my colleague Jay Hart pointed out, "What's that going to get you, a box of cotton balls?"

How come Tiger Woods fans never do this kind of stuff?

Is it okay to mention redneck and moron in the same sentence? Dale Sr. and Tiger are both great in their respective fields. Why not mention them together? Is it a racing thing, a golf thing, or a racial thing?

Yeah, a Tiger Woods fan has never stolen anything related to Woods. Nice stereotypical shot at the fans there, Jay.

^i don't even really know where to start... the verb-tense agreement, the spelling or the unvalidated misconception. both are legends in their respective crafts... where is the love?

Jay, Jay, Jay is this the best story you could come up with? Pretty weak, I read it twice...was even weaker the second time. Yea there a lot of people who would take a chance to get a "Dale" cardboard cut out, Tiger cut out ......Naw

Wow... just another yankee trying to degrade NASCAR... there's a reason I don't write news articles about golf, basketball, and especially steroi... I mean baseball, because I would cut them down. Maybe Jay shouldn't write on NASCAR.

WOW-really. Watch and see how much it actually does raise for the charity and then maybe you'll get it. The story and the 'highly intellectual rhetoric' above shows that all those big degrees really don't bring much common sense or insight. I am one of those doctorates with a cush 6 figure salary that loves racing and golf too for that matter. The fact that he took the time to write about it says it all!

hey d-no what planet are you from? ur from uranus i guess. dale was and will always be a nascar legend. and as far as you saying there are many other forms of racing with much more demanding talents? well i think NOT because if u look at the others sports drivers who have come to nascar, hint: ( look in the back of the pack) they have not even done anything close to a win. so where's the talent? don't get me wrong i like f-1 alot but to do what these guys do week in and week out for over 36 weeks of the year is quite a feat. think about what your saying and whats going on before you even begin to breathe again.

Hey d-no. You must be the biggest dumb*ss of them all on here. If all those other racing leagues are so much tougher and those drivers have so much more talent, why are all the open wheel racers coming to nascar? Well it seems to me that they have all stated they want to compete in the most difficult racing circuit today. After seeing what they have done so far ( absolutely nothing except get thier backsides handed to them) seems to me they couldn't hold Dale Sr.'s jock in both hands, or any of the other top drivers in nascar!
