From the Marbles - NASCAR

Sad story out of North Carolina today, as the Charlotte Observer's David Poole, one of the best NASCAR writers in the country, died of a heart attack earlier today. He was one of the most outspoken voices in NASCAR media -- just check his thoughts on Talladega at his website -- and he'll be deeply missed.

Years ago, when I was a callow young journalist just learning about NASCAR from the media side, I called him up and asked him the most basic of basic questions. He not only patiently answered every one, he went into intense detail and gave me ten times the information I needed. And while his press-room blowups were legendary -- I can't even repeat the names he laughingly called a bunch of us at Daytona this year while we were standing around trying to decide on a place to eat dinner -- he had knowledge, respect, and senses of both history and humor. Reading Poole, you could always learn something new about a sport you follow every single day. Deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.
