From the Marbles - NASCAR

Offseason? We don't see no stinkin' offseason! Why, it's only 86 days to Daytona! We've got to get moving and tidy up 2008! This week, we'll be ticking off the top moments of the year, in no particular order, and on Friday we'll let you decide on the finest NASCAR moment of 2008. Next up -- the closest finish of 2008.

The moment: Tony Stewart wins at Talladega ... or does he?

The deal: Stewart was well on his way to winning at Talladega in October for the first time after six second-places when -- holy schnikies! -- here came Regan Smith hard-charging for the victory. And, as you can see, Regan crossed the finish line first. Question is, did he go beneath the yellow line to get the win? NASCAR said yep.

The ramifications: Smoke fans were delirious. Smoke detractors, and general NASCAR naysayers, said it was typical NASCAR, making a questionable ruling to protect one of the favorite drivers at the expense of a young driver's first Sprint win.

The outcome: The race didn't have a whole lot of impact on the season, other than the fact that it gave Smoke his only 2008 win and his final one in a Joe Gibbs Racing ride. But on a larger scale, there was the sense that maybe NASCAR had gone a little far with this one, that maybe the rules didn't need to be quite so flexible after all.

If you make it to the cup level, you should know that you can't drive beneath the yellow at dega and daytona. I like to see any driver get their first win, but the rule is the rule

86 days til Daytona, 86 days til Daytona - oh man, Jay, thanks for keeping me (relatively) sane until the green flag drops again!

Listen, we all know. And if you have seen the video and have watched the video in slo mo, then you know that Tony didn't force him down, that he tried to get past Tony, but before he could even barely get his bumper down there, Tony cut him off (at that is what you are suppose to do so don't even go to that arguement). Tony did not force him to go down below the yellow line, he choose to go down. And there was plenty of room for him to go back, but he went down there and passed Tony.
If he is still hot over it, then he needs to find another job out of racing. Cause that is what racing is alll about.

I think tony has an unfair advantage with all that extra "downforce" he carries around. there should be a limit to how much "downforce" a driver can have

lol Moon - its kinda of the same arguement of the video from Richmond and whether or not KyBusch turned into Jr... you're never going to keep everyone happy, but I do agree that Tony did not force Regan below the line and I do agree that KyBusch turned into Jr... :o)

Next time I am sure Ragan, and any other driver in that situation, will not give up their position and instead wreck Stewart and take the win "legitimately". Many drivers came out and said if Nascar is going to make that call then they have no choice but to wreck the guy instead of getting sent to the back of the pack. The lead car has to know the ramifications of blocking a driver that is along side him and if they get turned don't come crying to the media afterwards.

    Good morning mp.
hey kg, was up in lebec at the tejon ranch yesterday on a job not far from bakersfield. it appears as if the bakersfield job has been postponed or cancelled. i kind of agree with what you said about having no choice but to wreck the other guy. it's either that or hand him the victory. nicely put.

If Tony and Ragan had wrecked, Menard would have had his first win. I was glad to see Tony win in a situation where he lost one years before.

Farmer - The drivers weight is figured into the equation, so it doesn't give anyone a disadvantage, or an advantage!

All drivers were told about the rule in the drivers meeting! If you want to win in the cup, you have to be smart enough to know the rules. dont cry over a rule that was put in place, the same rule that cost tony a Datona win 4 years earlier. REMEMBER? It was Junior that got the win after blocking Tony, and tony driving below the yellow.
