Offseason? We don't see no stinkin' offseason! Why, it's only 87 days to Daytona! We've got to get moving and tidy up 2008! This week, we'll be ticking off the top moments of the year, in no particular order, and on Friday we'll let you decide on the finest NASCAR moment of 2008. Next up -- the best race of 2008.
The moment: The final lap of the Daytona 500.
The deal: Everybody calls the Daytona 500 "NASCAR's Super Bowl." Screw that -- we need to start calling the Super Bowl "the NFL's Daytona 500." So anyway, this year's Daytona, the 50th in a long and illustrious line, was one hell of a barn-burner, a hootenanny of a hoe-down, and whatever other cornpone cliches you can think of. Bottom line, it was a hell of a race. Ryan Newman took the checkered flag thanks to a timely push from Kurt Busch past Tony Stewart.
The ramifications: Oh, there were storylines aplenty -- Kurt Busch giving an effective eff-you to Stewart, with whom he'd fought earlier in the week; Kyle Busch declining to help Tony in similar fashion; Dodges running the table on the night, taking six of the first eight positions.
The outcome: Um ... not much. Take a look at the Top 12: Newman, Kurt Busch, Stewart, Kyle Busch, Reed Sorenson, Elliott Sadler, Kasey Kahne, Robby Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Greg Biffle, Bobby Labonte, Brian Vickers. Only four of those guys would even make the Chase. Carl Edwards finished 19th and some guy named Jimmie Johnson finished 27th. They'd both get better.
