Indianapolis: Kenseth vs. Kahne, Edwards vs. Smith. Pocono: Kenseth vs. Smith, Edwards vs. Kahne. Watkins Glen: Kenseth vs. Edwards, Kahne vs. Smith
Group E is even more wide open than Group D, as any of the three Ford drivers could win the group. Kenseth just had another crew chief change and is frustrated with the way his team is running while Edwards may have finally gotten over the hump at Chicagoland. Kahne has been fast, but just not consistently fast, and heck, he may be the most capable of reeling off a win or two in the group stage. Smith is just here for the ride, though it would be an upset of epic proportions if he snuck into the tournament.
Jay's Picks: Winner: Kasey Kahne — Call me crazy, but I think Kahne makes a run here in these last few races. He's getting more comfortable with his car, and he doesn't want to go out of RPM like a chump. I see him taking this group in a surprise upset.
To Advance: Matt Kenseth — This was a total toss-up, but I'm thinking some retaliation is coming against Edwards, and soon, so that'll hurt his chances in the World Cup. (No red cards here.) Kenseth is unsurprisingly reliable, which, as we've discussed, is the key to advancing out of group stage.
Nick's Picks: Winner: Kasey Kahne — Kahne's proven to be a good road course driver over the last couple years and has won before at Pocono and run well at Indianapolis, so I don't think it's that much of a shock if he wins the group. But at the same time, if he is continued to be plagued by bad luck, he could easily be a nonfactor.
To Advance: Carl Edwards — Yep, this means that Matt Kenseth isn't making it past the group stage. Edwards and the No. 99 bunch are doing better than Kenseth and the No. 17, and I'm sure Edwards would love to silence his critics by winning the NASCAR World Cup more than anything else. (OK, maybe not)
