From the Marbles - NASCAR

On Tuesday, All-Pro wide receiver Randy Moss of the New England Patriots became the latest to add his name to a long list of players and coaches from the National Football League who have attempted to become involved in NASCAR -  as team owners.

With Moss Motorsports, Moss joins an all-star group which includes names like Joe Gibbs, Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Dan Marino and Tim Brown.

Unfortunately, the report card for this kind of crossover attempt has been a mixed bag, with more failures than successes.

Arguably only Gibbs can lay claim to having much success, although Aikman and Staubach and to some extent Bradshaw did see their tenure in NASCAR as more of a positive experience than negative.

Apparently Moss isn't a newcomer to racing. He's lent his name and presumably opened his wallet to a dirt-track team and he has served as a "Goodwill Ambassador" for the Urban Youth Racing School, which promotes auto racing to kids in the inner city areas of the country.

The announcement on Tuesday included no mention of any specific manufacturer alliance, sponsorship or driver.

However, Moss plans on fielding an entry in the Craftsman Truck Series by the end of the current season and launch a full-time campaign in 2009.

Moss admits that while he doesn't have all the details in place and that he and the group he has assembled are in the process of exploring who to hire for his team, he is "by nature a very competitive person and that this is an outlet for me to compete at another level."

I'm just wondering if he knows exactly what he's getting himself into.

There's an old joke in racing that goes like this - If you're a team owner and want to make a $1 million, you need to start with $5 million.

I hope that Moss and his associates have deep, deep pockets and are willing to open them up liberally to get a venture such as this off the ground.

He could put about $4-5 million of his NFL bonus money to good use hiring the right people, moving into an existing shop and then building or buying a fleet of two to three trucks and engines.

NASCAR is a tough business, one that is entirely different from anything Moss may have encountered before. It's all about the relationships - who you know here is much more important than how well you can catch a ball or make it to the end zone.

He'll have many challenges to overcome, the least being finding the right people to build a team from the ground up.

May I suggest that he align himself with an existing Craftsman Truck organization and then use his name and its possible influence along with the purported interest he has from companies he already works with to obtain the proper financing to expand.

Despite all the challenges before him, I commend Moss for even making the attempt. NASCAR needs more team owners like him - independent, aggressive and wealthy.

But before he starts opening up his checkbook, perhaps someone should send Moss the phone number of former NFL star and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown, who announced a similar venture nearly three years ago.

Brown's entry into NASCAR was also highly touted when it was announced as part of NASCAR's "Drive for Diversity" program.

We're still waiting for his team to hit the track.

Given his controversial history in the NFL, perhaps Moss might also think about hooking up with a similarly controversial NASCAR star - Tony Stewart

Now that Stewart has announced his interest in owning his own team, these two would make for a very interesting partnership.

It is a SAD day for Nascar when the likes of Randy Moss gets involved with it. Guess it just shows that they are only after the money and it doesn't matter what the morals of the person is that has the money!

I know I'm a 'little' cynical, but could Randy just be looking for a little redemption to his tarnished reputation by associating with the "clean" crowd at Nascar?

Well Jerel W you could be right, since we know Belichick cheats!! :)
And K George I think Moss will have to prove himself to us - "the clean crowd".
I know Nascar is trying hard to make it cross all race barriers, but they need to find some QUALITY people for our kids to look up to!

Buster - "quality people" to look up to...hmmm.....do you tell your son or daughter to look up to Chad Knauss? How about Michael Waltrip? These guys cheated. Knauss is a repeat offender. We talk about cheating in football (spygate and Carolina players taking steroids before the super bowl), Baseball (steroids, Barry, Clemens), basketball (Referee Donaghey tipping off bettors on NBA games) and you think that a potential owner in Moss has to "prove" himself before he can get in to NASCAR? I'm no Randy Moss fan, but your statement is hypocritical. I'm a huge Kasey Kahne fan, but even he got nailed last year at Daytona. As with ANY professional sport, you will have those the find ways to get around rules and regulations. The France family manipulates the rules to races on more than a handful of occassions each year. As far as who our kids should look up to, they should NEVER have to look farther than us that are parents. These kids do not see these athletes on a daily basis except on ESPN. They see us everyday and we have the most unfluence on their lives. If you want quality, teach that to your kids using your own morales and values, not those of a professional athlete. I will ALWAYS be a role model to my son, regardless of my profession. That's what is important, not overpaid athletes wanting to buy a race team.

Buster, maybe I didn't make myself clear, lets replace 'for a little redemption to his tarnished reputation' with 'to make myself not look like an A## so I can sell more swag', yah I think that fits better. Sorry lol

Well steves, I know that there are cheaters in Nascar, that is why I said we didn't need any more. But so far , or as far as we know they all take care of their children and aren't just a bunch of "baby's daddies". Sorry if you misunderstood me. I would like Nascar to be as clean as possible because I am a fan and the kids watch also.
And KGeorge your exactly right, I knew what you meant.
I just hope as I am sure all of you do, that Nascar stays as clean as possible. It seems they are working so hard to cross barriers that they are not taking care to do it with good people.
I have to wonder what is wrong with the way it is now.....

Buster, I completely understand where you are coming from and meant no disrespect to your point of view. I think that we put professional athletes on too high of a pedestal, which is why they always seem to fall harder when they screw up. There are certainly quality people in NASCAR that I can point out to my 5 year old and say "that guy does it the right way". But you are right when you say that they should look for people that will be good for NASCAR. But I don't think that Moss being an owner is bad for the sport, as long as he knows going in that these other owners and drivers will most certainly make sure that the rules and standards (those written and un-writen) need to be upheld. And as a side note, it's nice to see some thought provoking comments rather than a bunch of "this driver sucks or that driver should be put in the wall".

I am sure based on my sign in that I will get abuse as a Patriots fan but........Moss may be a bit of an a** but he is not a cheater. And to associate him with spygate is not fair either. What the Patriots are aaccused of is the same bs that all of the teams do and have done for decades. It is also the same sort of stuff that has gone on in NASCAR for decades and helped build the "charm" associated with good old boys that used to populate the sport. I say if Moss wants to compete and brings in new blood, we should welcome him and judge him on what he does. As a final note - one of the cool things about NASCAR is the constant search for a "loophole" by the crew chiefs. It is a risk vs reward scenerio that adds intrigue to the sport.

azpatriotsfan- I don't think Nascar fans are going to be 'welcoming' Moss into the sport. There are fundimental differences in peoples charactor and he doesn't seam to fit the norm in Nascar. Could you see Harvick standing on the pit wall mooning Mark Martin after last years Datona 500? If he goes through with this I'm sure he'll get a fair shake. Me, I'm all for diverse team ownership, what ever happened to Majic Johnson or Charles Barkley. I think the fewer team owners there are the sooner this sport hits the turn 1 wall.

Geez, half of you sound like closet racists. Pick any reason to exclude him you want but none of them are worth reading. It's obvious Moss is into racing and all out competition. Since he has the bank to back it up why not give him a chance. He is rather used to playing at the top level in sports so it seems natural that he'd go for it in nascar. Let him stumble and learn like we all do. At least he's trying something out of the box. Maybe he didn't grow up on the track but at least he's not as closed minded as you.

You know Moss is not going drive is he? He will be behind the scenes so why beat him up for wanting to find a way to compete more than just on the football field. He already promotes inner city racing "legally" and even though he can be an A** he just wants to branch out who knows maybe he will be the first owner to really have a full-time african american driver on the Sprint ( if he goes that far) series. Leave the trash talking about him on the football field.

You M..ROTFLMAO. After all the PC back and forth the mullet and beer belly comment KILLED me. Moss is a grown man who isn't afraid to take risks or speak his mind. My opinion is that he is exactly what the sport needs more of. All the vanilla( as in boring, not as in predominant race of the drivers) post race interviews are done to please the sponsors by getting them more air time, not to get at what the driver really thinks about the race he just finished...."Yeah Jerry, (swig of Pepsi) that Kurt Busch sure is a joker isn't he. I know he didn't mean to put me in the wall on the last lap but racin is racin, right? Oh well, maybe I'll get it next time" "Thanks mark martin, back to you Darryl...PUKE! Less PC more speak free. what exactly is a "clean crowd"? many african american people my not watch nascar yet ask nascar how are the merchandise numbers in the stores in our neighborhoods. we as a country need to stop and look in the mirror and say why does everything have to be about ethnic sport association.blacks(nba)whites(nhl)numb nutts(american gladiators) and why are we so different that a person who has a will to win and through all the bs he's put his family through he has learned a great deal from and maybe going to new england and to see how dicipline and structured that organization is maybe a light popped on. he has a purpose to reach out and be accepted and learn and appreciate racing, and trust me he is not a person who's goint to" thug the sport out"he will work his way up and build a foundation and he may not have letterman money yet dont you think for him it's about winning more than a payday. it's by far the most dangerous sport in the universe, space shuttle launch a close second. people wake up and stop being critical of a man wanting to challenge himself maybe if i had a little bit of money i would challenge my gas hand to go to "FULL". if this article was about flava flav then we would have problems.

First - about Moss and the moon shot, he supposedly heard some racial taunts directed at him that night - oh wait, racial taunts?? In Lambeau??? Sounds like a Talladega crowd. Seriously though, Bill Belichick would fit RIGHT IN as a NASCAR owner or even a crew chief - how long would it take him to violate 12-4-A???

lil mike- cmeponu2 -so far you are the only one's to bring up race, his charactor was in question which has nothing to do with the color of his skin just for clarification the word "clean" was put in quotes to denote sarcasim. i was not insinuating that they are better than any other group,(race or ethnicity was never stated), only that i believe they are percieved to be by the general public (there christian, patriotic etc.). with that said, when was the last time a race driver or crew member was convicted of murder or rape. you can't ignore the fact that there seams to be a charactor difference between some of the major sports players and nascar. i hope nascar does get some new owners for the sake of the sport, they are desperatly needed.

Calling NASCAR a clean sport with clean people/ PULLLLEEEZZZZZ. They started as moonshiners and never looked back. If you can cheat and not get caught you are looked up to in this sport. Some say you have to cheat to have a chance to win.
Trust me, I am not a Randy Moss fan by any stretch. BUT part of Nascars appeal to the "clean people" is it was started by a bunch of crooks.(LOL) and they like acting the Good ole Boy part.

That was an excellent comment. It, really, said it all. Parents should be the roll models, not some athlete or movie star. There's one problem with that concept! There are a lot of parents that have no right to be called roll models and it's a damn shame that it has to be like that.
