From the Marbles - NASCAR

See, this is why I love the Internet. A couple days ago, I posted a piece on NASCAR holiday cards designed by patients at a Daytona Beach hospital. Lo and behold, I got an email from the father of a patient at Memphis's St. Jude's Children's Hospital with another fine story about NASCAR's generosity.

Seems this lad, Wiley King, suffers from a rare form of brain tumor. In 2007, without even really realizing it, he entered a contest to design a paint scheme for a Nationwide (then Busch) Series car, and his entry won. David Reutimann ran the #99 car with Wiley's own paint scheme on it. (That's it right there.) Wiley, whose vision is too poor to see the race, "watched" by feeling the rush of the cars go by and getting the play-by-play from his dad.

David Reutimann had never won in a Busch Series race before. And in this race, yep, he had stretched out nearly a full-second lead with two laps to go. Wiley and his father Stephen were bouncing up and down in their seats, ecstatic. And then ...

... caution. The field caught up to Reutimann. Would Wiley's hopes fall just short?

Nope. Reutimann held off the competition for his first-ever Busch win. (See an ESPN feature on the whole thing here.) He and the King family have remained close ever since, and Wiley was in the pits again this year at Memphis.

And how did Wiley come up with such a killer design? His father put it best: "Our philosophy around our house is, all cars are faster with flames." That, friends, is a code to live by.

Great story and great charity. St. Jude's is one of my pet causes. I have some of the Christmas cards that the kids there have designed.

I wonder if David has ever let the kid sit in the car or taken him for a lap around the track? That would be neat to a kid.

Wow ! What an experience for Wiley :-) For all of it's many faults NASCAR as a whole does have away with getting folks involved and coming up with feel good stories :-)

As the mom of Wiley and wife of Stephen, this story means a lot to me. I watch the video every once in while and have a good cry. Wiley has not had many great days since he was diagnosed, but as his dad likes to say this was a great day that turned into a great experience. Thanks for sharing this with everyone.

Welcome to Marbleheads Stacy :-) Wiley has won my admiration for telling us how it is, shame a guy with so much to give does not get many good days but with loving folks like yourselves I guess he must be thankful for the good days when they come :-)

Stacy as a mom, my heart goes out to you and what you must be going thru watching your child suffer with his illness. No thank you for letting others share it with us. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers and I am sure whenever I see the St. Judes advertisements, I will remember Wiley and think of him.

Merry Christmas Y'all! We just drove in from St. Jude today. We go almost once a week for some type of treatment.
I'm Wiley's dad. I'm so proud of my son and his battle with this tumor. Wiley has been in this fight for 3 years. He was diagnosed the Tuesday after Thanksgiving of 2005. Christmas of that year was celebrated in out our local children's hospital - Blair E Batson - in Jackson, MS. It's probably one of our best. Four days earlier, we almost lost him.
The drivers are incredible. Many of them came to visit with Wiley. It was a such a blessing. And let me tell you about the teams. Those guys are the backbone of the sport. We got the rare blessing of getting to know the #99 team. We feel like those guys are part of our family. They have make the difficult days Wiley has to battle easier. No one will ever know just what kind of impact they have had on my son and family.
"Thank you" - Michael Waltrip Racing, Aaron's Rents, David Reutimann, Jerry Baxter, and the whole #99 team. Y'all have been so kind to my son and family. I don't know where we would be without you
"Thank you" - Ryan Kurek and the folks at Leverage Motorsports for having the vision to bring more awareness of St. Jude to the best fans in the world - NASCAR fans!!!
"Thank you" - St. Jude and the people who work tirelessly to win the battles against childhood cancer and tumors. Y'all make even more Christmas mornings possible.
"Thank you" - Blair E Batson and the people there who saved our son's life and help keep him alive.
"Thank you: - NASCAR fans!! Please keep supporting St. Jude, Children's Miracle Network, Make-a-Wish, Victory Junction, and the sponsors that donate their car's paint to these children's charities.
    Merry Christmas
    the King Family

Hi, Stacy! I hope Wiley has some more great days. It has to be difficult on all of you. May you have many blessings each day.
Hey, Art...sunny California is dark right now. ;-) Very foggy around here this morning; there was 4 wrecks involving 32 vehicles, including big trucks. Glad I don't have to go that far west to get to my office. Most of the way was good for me, though. For about a mile, I could only see maybe 300 feet, but after that it was about 1/4 mile.
