RICHMOND - Here's some good news for those thinking that this weekend might not be the best time to have an orange-hued reality-TV gremlin waving the green flag before a field of 9/11-themed cars: Snooki has surrendered her flag.
The "Jersey Shore" star, who shills for Wonderful Pistachios, was originally selected to wave the green flag at the Wonderful Pistachios 500. (What a coincidence!) The move was met with condemnation from, well, pretty much everyone.
But Richmond International Raceway has announced that Snooki will instead give the honor of waving the green flag to Frank Siller, brother of a firefighter lost on 9/11 and the founder of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. That foundation honors Siller's selfless sacrifice on 9/11; he was off duty but grabbed his 60 pounds of gear and ran through the tunnel from Brooklyn to Manhattan. He died at Ground Zero.
There will be many tributes to September 11 over the next few days. Good move on the part of Snooki and Richmond International Raceway to keep the focus on them rather than elsewhere.
