A plane carrying Rick Hendrick and his wife Linda slid off the runway at the Key West International Airport and into adjacent salt ponds on Monday evening, but no injuries were reported.
The G150 Gulfstream, owned by Jimmie Johnson Racing II Inc. and Hendrick Motorsports LLC of Charlotte, N.C. apparently suffered from brake issues upon landing. A local report indicated that there were two pilots and two passengers, and there were only minor injuries to two passengers: neck pain and shortness of breath, respectively, according to the Monroe County (Fl.) Sheriff's Office.
NASCAR, and Hendrick Motorsports in particular, have a difficult history with airplane accidents. Hendrick's son and several other family members died when their plane crashed in October 2004 near Martinsville. More recently, Jack Roush lost an eye when his private plane crashed in Wisconsin last summer.
UPDATE: Rick Hendrick suffered a broken rib and broken collar bone, while Linda Hendrick suffered minor cuts and bruises, according to a statement released Tuesday morning. Both pilots suffered no injuries. All four have returned to North Carolina.
The plane, part of the Hendrick Motorsports fleet and jointly owned by Jimmie Johnson, is the one Johnson typically uses when he travels to and from races.
