DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Though both two-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson and Hendrick Motorsports have reaped a great deal – two championships and a series-best 33 wins since 2003 – and wish to remain together long-term, neither side has much sense of urgency to extend a contract that expires after the 2010 season.

"We want to race with Jimmie Johnson as long as Jimmie Johnson wants to be racing and we've had discussions around that," Hendrick general manager Marshall Carlson said.

Carlson said discussions will "probably take their own pace," presumably, he said, because "the discussions have been, 'Hey, would you like to look into something long-term?' and there have been affirmatives on both sides."

Hendrick Motorsports signed four-time champion Jeff Gordon to a lifetime driver contract in 1999, which included an equity stake in his and what became Johnson's team. He is officially listed as Johnson's car owner.

"The sport has changed a lot since Jeff formed that deal with Rick," Johnson said. "It's hard for me to even think of that. It's nothing I've ever thought was possible. I certainly would look at that and would love that opportunity. I don't plan on going anywhere else. This is home for me. In a way, I feel like we already have that understanding."

Lowe's sponsorship agreement with Hendrick for the No. 48 Chevrolet also expires after the 2010 season.

well i think that johnson should maybe stay with hendrick team. He could also open up his own team in the future while still racing with hendrick motorshop. He could also learn a lot from hendrick and jeff.

I wish all the new and old drivers a sucessful 1908 season. Although I am a Jeremy Mayfield fan since he drove a cart car, maybe he will do better this year. Crew and Chief should be helping each other and bring back some of the old times when Jeremy drove with Rusty Wallace.

I can feel for the NASCAR rivals of "Team Hendrick".....so sorry! NOT!!! If Jimmie and Dale were added to be lifetime drivers for Team Hendrick....watch out! I would love to see such a team come to pass. Is there such a thing as "DYNASTY" in motorsports??

I knew that they changed sponsors and it's still a cup race, but, as yet, no-one has won a sprint cup because there hasn't, even, been a sprint race as yet. Therefore, JJ is NOT a 2 time sprint cup champion, as the author stated. He is a 2 time NEXTEL CUP champion. I maybe wrong and petty, but, I expect better facts from a proffesional writer. Don't u?

I think Hendrick should be more worried about signing Chad for a lifetime contract. Let's not kid ourselves, Jimmie is good but without Chad he would be just another driver.

Jimmy did pretty well while Darian Grubb ran the show for the suspensions Chad was on.
Let's see what Chad and Jimmy can do if they were to switch places.

Jimmie needed only two more wins last season to have won one third of the races, 10 races out of 36. I would say that achievement in the NASCAR world today is great and deserves at least a multi year contract. NASCAR has been trying more and more to make the cars even across the board over the past few seasons so 10 wins by one driver is very good. On another note: I think the COT ruins NASCAR more in the fact that it is even further from being a "stock" car. But it is safer and does put more of the skill back to the driver and the driver once again has to be more physical with the car like it really would be with a "stock" car.
