One of the biggest stories coming out of yesterday's Duels was Dale Jarrett's run, which put him over the top in his bid to run in his final Daytona 500. Of course, he had plenty of help, as Michael Waltrip and others were going to knock into the cheap seats anybody who threatened Jarrett.
Still, it represents a changing of the guard for NASCAR, with legends like Sterling Marlin and Bill Elliott watching this one from the couch. The question is, with these old warhorses riding off into the sunset, can the new generation win the respect of old-school racing fans? Darrell Waltrip says yes, though he believes it'll take a little while:
"When (David) Pearson and (Richard) Petty and Bobby (Allison) and all of them retired, they said, 'Well, there goes the sport. Who's going to take their place?''' Waltrip said. "Here I came, here Dale came, here Bill came, Rusty, Terry, and we carried the sport right on down the road. And here we are at one of those transitions again, where those young kids are going to have to come in. They're going to have to respect the sport, the people in it, and they're going to have to gain the respect of the fans. When they do, we'll be back rolling again.''
For now, though, we can start the Dale Jarrett Farewell Tour on Sunday at Daytona. Jarrett will be easy to spot; he'll be the one who drives the whole race with his left-turn blinker on.

drivers have faster qualifying speeds than the top 35 and they dont get in. no wonder nascar needs major changes. people like kyle petty(loser on wheels) and bobby labonte and j.j yeley and jeff burton would not be racing with drivers like almendinger and boris said and carpentier would be racing. they need to do away with the top 35 and get back to basics and qualify your way into the race. if the sponsers don't like it then maybe thay should find a new driver and race team. there is no incentive anymore for qualifying except pole.
