From the Marbles - NASCAR

Welcome back from the holiday, everyone. Hope all was well. Catching up with a few of the stories that cropped up over the weekend. One of the biggest came on Independence Day, when Mark Martin declared his independence from ... I dunno, DEI? AARP? Sanity? ... when he announced that he'd be running a full Cup schedule in 2009. His stated goal? To win a championship. No lame-ass "victory lap" for him, this is going to be full-out racing for Martin, and more power to him for it.

All old-guy-behind-the-wheel joking aside, in the 19 years Martin has run a full schedule, he's finished out of the top 10 only three times, and within the top five 12 times, including four second-place finishes. Dude ought to be wearing a peach-and-purple bridesmaid's dress with a record like that.

The NASCAR blogosphere seems remarkably united behind Martin, if a little dubious about his chances to win the Cup. NASCAR Ranting & Raving offers this assessment of Martin's chances:

I'd like to say that he has a viable chance at a Championship but I don't know, that 5 team hasn't been too strong in the past. Wait, before you start jumping on the Terry Labonte thing just stop right now because if I'm not mistaken this is not the same team. Once Dale Jr came on board he took over the 5 car's team and the number went to the old #25 team. Get the picture now? Good. Tell me if I'm wrong here, because I'd like to see Martin win a Championship - I really do - but I don't know if he can with that team, if it really is the old 25 team that is.

[UPDATE: A source very much in the know informs us that "the old 25 team" is now the 88 team. The only change made from the 5 team last year to this year is the car chief; everyone else is the same team as Kyle Busch last season.]

Restrictor Plate This! points out some of the useful particulars of the deal:

It's actually a relief to see this is a two-year deal, meaning next year will be free of the "last shot" angst.  Hopefully Martin will relax a tiny bit. And win that championship. And, speaking as a Hendrick fan, welcome aboard, Mark!  Now relax and enjoy not being the media focus on your team by showing 'em you're anything but someone rolling on their past accomplishments as you ease out of the spotlight.

Bottom line, there's absolutely no downside to this deal; Martin's still a legit competitor. What will be interesting is to see how everyone, particularly the Hendrick team, starts to react should Martin be in striking distance of the championship next September. Not suggesting anybody would ever throw a race to let Martin win, but how much would the Gordon/Johnson/Junior trifecta sacrifice for Martin's chances? It'll make for another fine storyline in 2009, that's for damn sure.

I would love to see Mark have a big season finally. He seems like a genuinely good man. I don't know what his problem has been during his career....probably being surrounded by inferior teammates, etc.

If he is going to get a championship he is going to have to get up on that steering wheel and take some chances not just pull over and let someone pass.

Hey I am happy to see Mark back full time, but it is time for old guys driving humor. Maybe Geritol will sponsor him? How about Depends? I mean he did the Viagra sponsorship. Quaker State High Mileage? AARP they need to get into NASCAR. How about THE CLAPPER? Wait I know the I've fallen and I get can't get up thingy.
But seriously Mark is a class act and one of the best drivers out there. Look what happens when he runs a partial schedule, he's still in the top 35 and has only run 13 of 18 races. Plus he has more personality than Jeffy and Johnny Jimson combined, but then again so does a door knob.
Oh yeah welcome back Jay. We need some winners from last weeks CaC's don't we?
Is there a way you could pick maybe the top 5 off the entries and then set up a pole so we could vote for the winners? Just thinking it would be fun for us your loyal readers.

    Welcome back, Senor Blog Monkey!
Good for Mark Martin. Maybe he can whip that 5 team into shape and make a legitimate run at the championship.

I really have no opinion about Mark coming back. My brother is a big fan of his, but I kinda am thinking that HMS is looking like there is a lot of cooks in the kitchen....

It would be nice to see Mark win a championship. He has been a class act and it would be great for him to go out as number 1. He does pull over sometimes...usually when he knows he doesn't have the car to win. I think some of the products that deal with aging should get into his sponsorship. As I work with a lot of elderly who have dementia, maybe one of the dementia medications could be a sponsor.
Speaking of age, congratulations to Dara Torres, swimming in yet another Olympics!
I will try to have time to check in later...I owe, I owe, so off to work I go!!!

Really though, Oldcorps, what's the big deal about HMS that you would turn your back on someone you've been rooting for so long?

Kim T #You know that they are doing everything they can to cinvince everyone she's on drugs. I don't think she would be that stupid. She just has a fire that others don't and they are sure jealous of her.

Kim the dementia drug sponsorship is a great idea except the folks seeing it may not remember it. Then again the way this season is going it is not really one to remember anyway.

Happy to see you back Senor Blog Monkey!
I like the "Crypt Keeper", but he has no chance to win a championship unless he learns to use the front bumper. Never going to win by pulling over for a better car, or not moving a slower one out of the way.

Hey maybe some funeral homes or cemetaries could sponsor him, instead of driving a UPS truck in commercials he could be racin around in a hearse.

LMAO I know it was DJ it was just a thought about sponsorship. BTW I am one of the older guys, I just think its funny thats all. Humor is sometimes done with exagerations. I love NASCAR cuz its one of the few sports where old guys (late 30s', 40's, and 50's) can still be competitive becuase sometimes experience pays off.
