From the Marbles - NASCAR

NASCAR punch line, thy name is Pocono.

First on the list of Tracks Fans Would Most Like To Bulldoze And Then Salt The Earth So Nothing Ever Grows There Again, Pocono takes all kinds of heat for all kinds of reasons. It's flat. It's long. It's dull. It's got those three weird turns that you can't set up for correctly, so everybody's playing a best-guess rather than a targeted engineering game.

Look, I'm not going to lie to you, I'm not the biggest fan of Pocono, or even the 50th. I've gotten all kinds of emails from people who say they live in Pennsylvania and won't go to the race. It's not the track you show people when you want to turn them on to the sport.

That said — and this is not NASCAR propaganda, just starting a little conversation — is it time to cool it on Pocono? I mean, everybody from Richard Petty to Dale Earnhardt to Denny Hamlin to Jeremy Mayfield has won there. The triple-curve setup puts the burden on crew chiefs and techs to choose wisely. And really, even a bad race is better than, oh, a good tennis match, right?

The races there need to be shortened, of course. Lop a hundred miles off and you're talking. And in an ideal world, the banking would be increased, too, but that's not going to happen. So we make do with what we've got.

I'm not saying we immediately embrace Pocono, just that we think about whether it's really the paved joke that so many of us make it out to be. What's your take?

Of course, if we did agree to cut Pocono some slack, we'd have to find a new track to pick on.

Auto Club Speedway of California, you're on deck.

digg delicious

Pocono has always been my favorite track. It has unique character. The alternative? Another cookie cutter track for the Jimmie Johnson show. Let's keep things interesting by keeping a unique track around. If you get bored watching the racing here, are you really a racing fan anyway?

It wouldn't take a whole lot to make it a great place. As was mentioned, shorten the amount of laps and raise the banking. Make it progressive banking so they can pass in the corners and add some fan amenities. The last time I was there, it was like a local dirt track from say.......Oh......50 years ago! LOL! The only thing I really dislike about is it always seems to rain on that damn plateau the track is on.

I think it's time to take away one of the 2 races Pocono has every year and restore a race to a track that has been dropped from the schedule. It's crazy they have 2 races with in months of each other. Not even a spring/fall deal, more like spring/summer. Come on!

If Pocono is going to keep two race dates then they need to cut them to 400 miles each. A 500 miler would be ok if they only had 1 race date.

Progressive banking at Pocono sounds quite interesting, as does a 400 mile race, but the Mattioli Family will fight both tooth and nail.

I thought old man Mattioli was hilarious with his diversification. He bragged about a "green" RV area and the village of Pocono he's building nearby. Hey old buddy, why don't you improve the track and facilities? The answer is that he is big friends with the France family and I doubt NA$CAR will ever remove a race date or shorten a race (100 more miles equals how many more brats and beers?). How can anyone think he will spend money on the track when the track facilities are managed from a doublewide trailer?

yes, I think it's becoming rather fashionable to bag Pocono these days; though we probably won't see 'Dega-style action this weekend, or rather, though we definitely won't see 'Dega-style action on Sunday, the uniqueness of the track's layout and lingering animosities should at least provide decent entertainment for a few hours.

and Jeremy Mayfield won there by nudging Dale Sr. out of the way on either the final lap or one of the final laps, so I can dig that it's not a fan favorite, but from what I've seen at many of the 1.5 mile tracks, Pocono should be cut slack.

So you take away North Wilksboro and Rockingham but leave this bohemith with terrible racing with 2 cup dates. Pocono sucks as does North Eastern PA as a whole.

I attended the first 500 mile race ever at Pocono. An Indy car race won by Mark Donohue. I attended the USAC stockcar 500 milers with winged cars in 1971, I believe Richard Petty showed up with one of his winged Plymouth's.. I attended the first NASCAR race there also. But it would take a free ticket to Dr. M's private box to get me there again, with a helicopter ride in and out from my doodstep, and I still might have to think about it. And I live only 103 miles away. LONG LIVE WATKINS GLEN, only 55 miles away.

just out of curiousity, what tracks do people actually like? After Daytona, folks complained Daytona sucks, then after 'Dega, people are always like 'Dega sucks, folks get stoked for Dover but after ten minutes, consensus is usually that Dover sucks, folks have been coming on this board and writing Bristol sucks, so, can someone kindly say what current tracks are worth racing? Martinsville? 15 cars on lead lap? Darlington, which hasn't exactly had the best races in recent memory? I guess I'm confused; I mean, the racing sucks, the tracks suck, the blog sucks, yet everyday more and more people crawl out of the woodwork - what gives? Yeah, I'm a tad bit sensitive, a Disconnected Yankee in King Richard's Court, no doubt, parking is free and compared to ticket prices for sporting events across the Northeast corridor, Pocono's are very competitive (I can buy a premium seat and rent a car, as pathetic as that sounds, for the price of admission to one Mets game). Once again, not saying we're gonna get great racing, but judging by what I've seen from both past and present tracks, the fall off isn't that bad. And if cars can't nail the set up for all three corners, won't that make some drivers good in turn one, some good in turn two, and some excel in turn three, thereby making the racing closer than it would be at a 1.5 mile track where it's simply a matter of hitting your marks?

don't get me wrong, Lainey, I do my share of griping, but it seems like folks complain about virtually every track. I know that Pocono isn't the cream-of-the-crop, but it seems like every week people are like this track or that sucks, why dont they race at North WIllksboro or Rockingham, etc. I personally like the appeal of plate racing, but I also very much enjoy the short tracks. I wouldn't rate Pocono a favorite, but I don't understand where all the criticism is coming from. I mean, from what I've heard, you either hate the player or the game, but both? Wow. I dig road courses too; guess this post, and others, make me a nascar shill, but what can I do, I enjoy the sport even though I acknowledge the concerns of diehards. Anyway, my guess is that the minute I throw down money to attend Sunday's race, it will rain, as projected for basically the entire weekend, and the race will suck, as many are predicting anyway.

Nostra... I do understand what you're saying and agree. And, if we're not complaining about the tracks, we also, whine about the drivers, cause we think they're always whinning. :) Rain... oh no... and, if you're going, I hope it stays dry... enjoy and have a great time!!!

And Pocono deserves classification as a destination racetrack. We got the slopes baby. Mount Airy casino. Great Wolf Lodge. Knotts Berry Farm. An exit on I-80 that reads "Buttzville". 6 Apple stores. What's Charlotte got? Scarowinds? Some Hall of Fame? We ALL love rock but who really ever visits Cleveland for the rock hall? They used to go for the Cavaliers and LeBron. Now they have nothing. NOTHING.
