From the Couch: RIP Talladega

Wow, what else is there to be said? That sucked. From the candy-colored streamline parade to JJ's dumb luck, there wasn't much to relish. Yup, it sucked for a multitude of reasons, but the biggest may have to be the death of a unique race. RIP Talladega , welcome to the cookie cutter club.

Ironically, some two-score ago when Talladega premiered, the races pretty much sucked, too. In fact, the drivers actually striked (past tense of "to go on strike," and yes I'm aware that that is not a word) the very first race. They were broadly afraid. I don't blame them on this one. Back then a seatbelt was the roof, and Talladega was the equivalent of taking a toboggan into a luge course. If I had nothing but a t-shirt, a leather football helmet and pack of cigarettes rolled up in my sleeve as my safety devices, I'd soil myself too.

Now? For safety reasons, drivers are also striking, but contrarily, calling for more speed (I'm pretty sure this makes them tougher than their forefathers, just sayin'). They striked (yeah, I'm still aware) to let them race. And whether it was deliberately unionized or not isn't the point; they acted in union. They didn't race for a simple reason: there was no incentive to. Passing at Talladega is now next to impossible without eight or more wheels pushing, NASCAR banished the bump draft (behind only rubbin', the second-coolest evolutionary nuance and tool in the driver arsenal), and Talladega is synonymous with 'DNF, Crash,' making it the Chase's strategic equivalent of a speed walking contest.

I love how NASCAR still defended the race, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. The drivers, the journalists and the fans were (and still are) nearly unanimous in their distaste, yet NASCAR still won't admit the truth and prefers to expostulate the collective perception.

That's right, you didn't see a single-file parade. You saw only five cautions and some 20-plus lead changes in the waning laps. Silly fool, that is excitement!

Whatever. Take your statistics and shove them up your Eastaboga. Your rules castrated the competition and still didn't negate the Big One. Ryan Newman just got a superspeedway lobotomy, and you forced me to listen to Mark Martin exclaim that, in his entire career, he had never been in that position before. Man, he really wasted that Viagra sponsorship.

But I also hold Steve Letarte and Alan Gustafson liable. Sure, the race sucked, but the Chase race sucked even worse. I'm no expert crew chief, but why in the world would you do the opposite of Chad Knaus? The guy has only ruled the Chase strategy for four straight seasons and currently has his driver in position to win an unprecedented fourth straight championship. Yeah, do the opposite of that guy. That makes loads of sense.

Yeah, all the way around, that was a bummer. Oh well, there is still Texas, Phoenix and Homestead.

Awe, hell, on second thought, congratulations JJ.

Some people are quick to jump ship.i would hardly lay this track to rest...NASCAR makes some stupid decisions sometimes, but only to please all the sissyfied people who complained about the track being to fast and dangerous in the spring. If you were one of those....this race was made for you. Now, Lets get back to normal.

I don't think Nascar came up with or enforcing the rules before the race to make the race boring. I think that they only did it out of safety for the drivers. They didn't want to see anything bad happen and it was a quick fix until they can do something better.I think the truck race made them think twice about it.

So painfully true James. RIP 'Dega.
Now, even as disappointed as I am, I will continue to watch all races until they are no longer televised. That's what scares me, is the fact that Nascar is slowly dying. Many sponsors are leaving at the end of the season and Lowe's is done with Charolette. Will 2010 be the last season?

NASCAR turned a heavyweight match into a tickle fight. Worst, they waited to spring the news on the drivers until the last minute. If the teams had a few days - hours? - to prepare, I'll bet they'd have found a way to at least make it interesting.
As for Yimminy Yohnson, the most interesting thing I heard all day was Dale Jarrett relating his conversation with JJ. Dale mentioned that he shared a bunch of strategy w/Jimmy - especially that to win 'Dega you've gotta moving forward in "the last 5 laps." Earlier and you get shuffled back; later and ~ahem~ you get caught up in all the junk at the end of the race.
It sure looked like Jimmy took DJ at his word and, by golly, was moving himself forward during the last 5 laps, just as everybody else was getting caught up in the junk at the end of the race. (And, incidentally, I loved it - LOVED it - that Rusty Wallace basically wrote Jimmy out of the script w/about 15 laps to go. Rusty admittedly only said he "wasn't convinced" that Jimmy had the hot rod to compete - but still. Poor old Rusty, just can't keep those jaws under control once they start flappin,' can he? lol.)
Great post James. Good stuff. And the next time some elitist yak badmouths NASCAR fans, I'm going to ask when was the last time they saw the phrase: "..expostulate the collective perception." in an article about the NFL. Nicely done.

Without the cautions...i doubt Jimmie would have finished where he did. And when Rusty wrote him off, it looked pretty legitimate to say so. Or didn't you watch the race Wolfmancan?

    great article James.
I'm with you Willie, I will always love 'Dega. Sure this weekend could be summed up as a weekend of hellonwheels but I be damn if one day I'm gonna say I love it and the next I don't like it. Not gonna sit here and say get rid of it or x it out of the chase. It still could be the wild card of the chase. Without it, why even have the chase, just crown JJ.
Now I'm debating the wisdom of not being at TMS this weekend. After last weekends fiasco, on one hand I'm pissed off enough not to go to another race. But (and that's a really big but) on the other hand, I'm interested in being there in person to actually see what the drivers do at TMS. I think (even if it wasn't verbally spoken as a complete unity) their single file racing spoke volumn's.

Dani - Evidently her intentions are to go with Jr and that makes sense, since they are both using Go Daddy.com. Looks like we'll get to see her in NASCAR in 2010. Good luck Danica. I just happened to catch a scroll from ESPN, while I was watching a sports show.

I so hate the fact that Danika and Jr. are going to be in cahoots. Let the Jr/Danika jokes start now..... I am certain it will start off having something to do with" the 2 most over-rated drivers in the world" or something along those lines LOL. Earnhardt Jr better pull his self up by the boot straps and stand on it next season....

SUndays race, was the final straw for me. I had said for 3 weeks, if JImmy wins again, its over for me next year. I live in Texas and don't plan on going this weekend now. I think I will record it and watch the guys I like and we know its over and Jimmy has one. Boring all year thinking it, now knowing it.
Nascar is loosing its ass now with sponsors, because people like you and me, will not watch it as they restrict more and more. I would rather watch a great dirt car race now than Nascar, its alot more fun. JMHO

I remember several times during that race when the 88 car was leading over half the fans there were standing cheering and loving every minute of it. So to be fair James you would have to say the race only sucked sometimes. Unless of course Nascar paid them fans to act like they were enjoying the race. Bet thats what happened.
