Every weekday morning, we'll run out four NASCAR stories to get your day started right.
Now driving the No. 43 car ... Reed Sorenson? "It appears that Reed Sorenson will race his fourth season behind the wheel of one of NASCAR's most historic race teams: the No. 43. According to Sirius Radio. Tom Reddin, CEO of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, now that the merger with Petty Enterprises is official, Sorenson will drive the No. 43."
The end of the silly season: "We gather here today to pay tribute to an old pal, one that made NASCAR infinitely more interesting and entertaining in the midsummer months: Silly Season, as we know it, is dead. Like the greatest friends, it always used to come along at just the right time. Just when the racing season was hitting a lull, Silly Season showed up to throw the possibility of your favorite driver switching teams or seeing him join forces with a guy you love to boo. Driver movement seemed mostly restricted to that certain time of year - adding a little drama to a time when there isn't much - and by the time the Chase For The Sprint Cup cutoff rolled around, nearly all of the dust had settled. No more. Silly Season grew into an unrecognizable and deformed beast in 2008, taking on a new shape and meaning."
Why NASCAR is better than other professional sports: Bump-Drafts has a few reasons, including: "It's The Drivers....Somewhere in that field is a guy you can relate to. You want machismo? Smoke is your guy. Want a gentleman? Then you'll like Mark Martin. Are you a Southerner? You might like Dale Jr. or Jeff Burton. A Northerner? How about Martin Truex Jr. or Joey Logano. A mid-Westerner? You've got Matt Kenseth and Ryan Newman. From the Southwest? There's Bobby Labonte. The West? We've got Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch. The Pacific Northwest? Greg Biffle and Kasey Kahne.
David Poole tries to make sense of Earnhardt-Ganassi: "Now that everything seems to be settled with the merger of Gillett Evernham Motorsports and the race team formerly known as Petty Enterprises, the biggest question still hanging out there is what the merged Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is going to wind up looking like on the race track. We know that Martin Truex Jr. will drive the No. 1 Chevrolets with Bass Pro Shops as the sponsor. Beyond that, though, everything else is just about a guess. Juan Pablo Montoya will drive for the team, too. He told us on Sirius NASCAR Radio this week that he'll be in the No. 42 car, as he was last year when it was a Dodge. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing will use Chevrolets."

i'm pretty sure i agree with you about egr!

i'm optimistic now about the gem/petty merger, with elliott keeping his ride and petty having a place at the track. maybe he isn't bringing a lot of money to the table, but he's the king and long before i knew what nascar was, i knew who richard petty was. i hope the new team takes his name - a tribute to a legend who is still out there being a legend.
i don't see the merger of gem and petty as a failure of petty, i see it as doing what needs to be done to stay in the business. i'm really excited about the entire deal and the idea of petty in the garage with my guys is just too cool for school! : d

Kim I think they could do alright but they need to get Teresa out of the racing side of the business. Let her handle marketing and merchandise, but she has no business running the racing side of things. Just look at what happened to DEI when Jr left. They have slipped from the elite status and are gonna have to make some serious changes to stay competitive
