Every weekday morning, we'll run out four NASCAR stories to get your day started right.
Junior loves his ribs: "Dale Earnhardt Jr. likes Memphis ribs. So much so that he has a steady supply FedEx'd to his home in North Carolina. His affinity for the city's most sought-after cuisine was obvious during a repeat episode this month of MTV's Cribs. It is unclear, however, when Earnhardt developed a taste for Memphis barbeque. In his only race at Memphis Motorsports Park, the inaugural Sam's Town 250 on Oct. 31, 1999, Earnhardt drove the No. 3 Chevrolet to a runner-up finish behind Jeff Green ... In an attempt to entice Earnhardt back to the track, Memphis Motorsports Park is extending a standing offer of a lifetime supply of Memphis ribs in exchange for a one-time competitive run in the track's fall Nationwide Series race on Oct. 24. (The Cup Series is at Martinsville that weekend.) Pig-N-Whistle is the Official Barbeque Restaurant of Memphis Motorsports Park." Junior, seriously -- hold out for Rendezvous or Corky's. Pig-n-Whistle is the McDonald's of Memphis ribs.
Kentucky Speedway deal was a "fire sale"? "Court papers filed by the former owners of Kentucky Speedway say they had to accept less than market value when they sold the track to Speedway Motorsport's Inc. because the facility doesn't have a NASCAR Sprint Cup race date. When Kentucky Speedway co-founder Jerry Carroll announced last May that he had agreed to sell the track to SMI, he said the ownership group did not recoup its $152 million investment. According to a legal filing earlier this week, Carroll hopes to recoup it by winning a federal antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and sister company International Speedway Corp."
Mike Skinner, manipulating the media? Mike Skinner is looking for a truck ride. And in a recent interview, he specifically mentioned Randy Moss Motorsports. NASCAR Insiders found this somewhat curious: "This immediately jumps out at me as a situation where a driver is trying to manipulate a situation through the media. There is no reason to mention a specific team unless you are trying to do one of two things. You are either attempting to put pressure on the team you named to get something done because time is running out and you are a hot commodity; or you are using the named team to get a better deal with one of those other, unnamed teams. And why you ask, would a media outlet participate in such a situation? Because it's news. Writers and media people are in the business of drawing attention to their organization." Friends, I'll have you know that we're above manipulation. I'd stake a week's worth of tasty bacon-and-salsa Chick-Fil-A biscuits, now available for a limited time at your local Chick-Fil-A, on our reputation.
Ernie Elliott is back to building engines: "Baker Curb racing announced today that they have reached an agreement with legendary engine builder Ernie Elliott to provide the engines for the No. 27 Kleenex Racing Ford Fusion in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2009. With his extensive background and reputation for building race-winning engines, Ernie Elliott is widely recognized as one of the best engine builders in NASCAR. Powered by Ernie and driven by his brother Bill, the Elliott's still hold the one-lap speed record of 212.809 MPH at Talladega Superspeedway on May 1, 1987, a record that still stands today. In 1985 the Elliott's teamed up to win the inaugural Winston Million bonus along with 11 race victories and 11 poles and in 1987 they achieved their dream of a Cup Championship. Ernie Elliott-powered cars have 38 victories on the Sprint Cup Series along with 51 poles and 147 top five finishes."
