From the Marbles - NASCAR

With this week's race running on Saturday night, NASCAR fans had a free Sunday to kick back and survey the world around them -- which meant most of us tuned into other sports. (What, go outside? Spend time with the family? Do chores? Are you insane?)

Anyway, in between watching the Tennessee Titans pull the equivalent of a start-and-park, we got to see some of our favorite drivers pop up in commercials. Over at Scene Daily, Jeff Gluck makes an interesting point about the way that NASCAR can increase its brand and reach even when races aren't going on.

"NASCAR is constantly searching for ways to penetrate the 'stick-and-ball' sports market and attract new fans, occasionally with a little success," Gluck writes. "But as the sanctioning body well understands, a terrific way to spread its message is to have sponsors that use the drivers in advertising campaigns."

Here's the thing -- I'm so close to all this media stuff that I can't possibly be an impartial observer. But what I'm wondering is, what's the perception of various NASCAR drivers in the world outside? Tony Stewart, obviously, has a solid rep because of the Old Spice/Burger King "Estrada" commercials, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. looks like everyone's conception of a good ol' boy, but what about the rest? Do you think the average non-NASCAR fan can differentiate between Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne? Is there more that these drivers ought to be doing to establish their own personas (a la Michael Waltrip, the down-home genius of the NAPA commercials)?

Personally, I think that NASCAR needs to do all it can do to spread its image far and wide; I'm not one of those "keep it a Southern thing" fans. So what's your take? Which drivers are doing the best job of spreading the NASCAR gospel to the unwashed masses?

NASCAR pitchmen need to stick with preaching to the choir. Nobody else is paying any attention. Every dollar NASCAR spends on advertising during "big 3" games is a dollar wasted.

Kasey had a lock on being recognized with those Allstate commercials and I'm really disappointed there are no new ones. I wonder how many women (*cough*) started watching Nascar because of that? As for telling the difference between Jimmy and Carl, meh, not so much.

Smoke's BK commercials are some of the worst he's ever been a part of. I mean, does anyone care about Erik Estrada and Carrot Top? Seeing those two is enough to make me lose my lunch, not go buy some hamburger. That whole campaign was really poorly thought out; very similar to the awful Subway ads with Tony and Jarrod last year.
I don't think that NASCAR suffers from a lack of people being able to identify some of the drivers used in ads any worse than any other sport, or the entertainment industry. I've watched some of the recent Macy's ads and wondered who the people were and if any of them were actually supposed to be famous. Same with ads that show football and basketball or other athletes. If they aren't on a team I watch, I have no clue who they are, and they won't influence my buying a product or service one way or the other.
Has anyone else wondered how Jimmie gets to do all of those union jobs in his Lowe's commericals?

I agree with the other Kim--Kasey was identifiable with the cougars. Even though he's a bit of a party boy--he doesn't fit the Bud drinker image; and I can't recall a Bud ad with him in it. Michael Waltrip and the Napa and Aaron's commercials are memorable because of his personality; comes off as a bit of a flake, but a nice guy in them. And who can forget David sleeping in one of the commercials for Aarons? Jimmie and his "jobs" using the Kobalt tools; you notice them, but if you're not a Nascar fan, you aren't going to become one because of them. And, much as I love Tony Stewart, the commercial with Erik Estrada and Carrot Top has got to be one of the worst I have seen. Being in California, I don't see too many local ads with the drivers. The exception being when it gets close to time for Sonoma, Save Mart Grocery Stores all have driver promotions with cardboard standups. Our local Office Depot has a standup of Tony Stewart as you go in the door. I don't watch much sports on TV, other than Nascar, so I haven't seen too many commercials with the drivers except during a race. Once in a while I'll see a commercial featuring a driver, but not often.

The worst advetisement is the lack of American pride that the drivers show by not putting their hands over their heart during the playing of the national anthem . The Busch brothers never do , and that Juan pablo , likes the US dollar but shows no respect . I have written NASCAR about this and got no response . Until NASCAR does attempt to solve this problem I will just watch it on TV . I refuse to spend any of my hard earned money on supporting such a sport that is Non-American . I also wish to thank those who do respect the USA.
