From the Marbles - NASCAR

Every week during the Chase, we'll give you the lowdown on who's up, who's down, who's charging, and who's sliding. Not that it now seems to matter much any more ...

Where we stand: Sweet mother of mercy. There's points racing, playing it safe to pile up as many points as you can and hope the leaders falter, and then there's points racing, where you just go out there and win every damn race and let the points all pile up nicely. Bow down before the greatness that is Jimmie Johnson! Bow down, I say! Behind him, if you care, are Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, and poor ol' Kyle Busch.

Movin' on up: Biffle, Bowyer, Burton and Edwards are all within a hundred points of each other, and are making a hell of a good push ... for second place. Plus, there was a bunch of shuffling in the second half -- everybody from spots 7 to 12 shifted position -- but, you know, that really doesn't much matter anymore. All Johnson has to do is basically show up and not get eaten by jaguars in the four final races, and he's in very good shape.

Bottoming out: Kyle Busch dropped all the way to last place in the Chase. At this rate, David Ragan will catch him by Homestead -- and he's nearly 2,000 points back.

Outlook: As the Red Sox showed last week, it's not over till it's over. But then as the Rays showed last night, sometimes it is indeed over after all. We'll hold off on the Johnson coronation -- we, uh, got into a bit of trouble doing that for Kyle a few weeks back -- but man alive, the dude is riding higher than anybody else in sports right now.

Hi Reds, to answer your question from the last thread, I think LaBonte is still with Petty, but without a sponsor

Thanks SF! I figured he was still going to be around. I like Bobby so I hope he gets a good ride. Although Bowyer in the Cheerios car just seems so weird to me. And I think Casey might be a little too clean cut for Jack Daniels. Thats like KK in the Bud car, I just don't think it fits well

I may comment about Jimmie being a bot and all and he's not one I cheer for (but I don't want him to wreck, either!), but he is a great driver for this era. If he wins this year's championship, it won't be his last...unless he retires. There's always that hope.
KG...if you choose to read back...I'm watching the morning news from Fresno and they have a Falcon's player and coach on. They are playing the Evil Bakersfield Condors. Bragging that they won more fights than they scored in goals in the first games. And that they are back in the smaller venue so it will be louder than at the Savemart Center. :-)

oh well there is always next year for someone to come in and beat Johnny. Don't foresee him bombing out any in the last 4 races. Him and his team are too strong in the chase to mess up enough to give any other driver a chance. With that being said I hope I just jinxed him.

Wouldn't that be something, someone coming back and beating johnny for the championship AND the rays winning the worlds series.

Morning, all! If Jimmy wins this championship, NASCAR will have to do something. Was just reading Bonkowski's story about it.

thats right reds, 3 in a row is nothing for this team, its got the driver, its got the crew cheif, and its got the cash to just keep on rolling. chad and jimmy are not interested in getting in the record books, they want to re-write them. i am signing off until speedweeks '09, no sense in watching this any more.

Carol - I read Bonkowski's story also and on a rare occasion, i disagree with him. This was one of them. Just because a driver is good at certain tracks, I don't believe it is right to penalize him by going to different tracks. Rather, I think it's up to the other drivers to GET GOOD AT THOSE TRACKS. I'm open for comments disagreeing with me!

Think of what could have been - blowing the chase in 04 and 05, he could be working on 5 in a row. That's a Yankee-type dynasty
Speaking of the Yanks, as for you, Jay, Boston may do well in the first couple of decades of a century, but the Yankees dominate 6 or 7 of the last 8!). Hey, how many do they have to go to catch up?
Trivia question: which is the only MLB team to win World Series in three different cities? My favorite NL team, the one that Boston SHOULD have kept, but I'm glad they left Boston!
Back to your regularly scheduled Marbles..........Jimmie may turn out to be this generation's Petty - Richard, that is.

Got some sleep. thanks, MP. Feeling generally very congested but at least my chest and head don't ache any more. :) Hubby is concerned and taking all kinds of care of me, which is nice; and the only thing I really wanted to do today was go vote, but we do have a couple more chances to do it early.

Haven't read the Bonkowski story yet, but the problem with Atlanta's two dates is the timing. One is very early, and the second date should be what it was in Kulwicki's time: THE FINALE! IMHO, the final three dates should be Lowe's, Atlanta, and Daytona (3rd race). Homestead? If they don't rate a second date, they sure as hell shouldn't get THE FINALE! The racing may have improved, but the place has no history. If you want to build some, give it the week after Daytona (1). There should be no Chase races unless it has a race in the first 26. Period.
