UFC 134 results from Rio: Fan reaction
The Brazilians had much to celebrate as UFC 134 ended with 10 of their countrymen winning their fights. One Canadian and one Bulgarian round out the rest of the wins. No submissions, only striking or decision wins from the home of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Heavy right hands dominated.
Dana White tweeted, "The loudest crowd EVER in the last 10 years of UFC events. Place was packed for the first fight like it was the main event. It's INSANE."
The UFC Octagon girls, Arianny Celeste and Chandella Powell, usually seen wearing red or black outfits, were sporting the colors of the Brazilian flag. I vote to see those colors more often - even when there are no Brazilians on the card.
$100,000 Bonus Winners
Fight of the Night bonus for Pearson and Barboza. Dana White tweeted "@RossTheRealDeal amazing fight Ross. You should be proud! FON on one of the sickest cards ever"
Not a bad deal for losing the fight - huge compliment from the boss and Fight of the Night bonus - in Rio - on a card packed with Brazilian stars. British MMA fighters have to feel encouraged by that good news. Those English lads are constantly criticized for their limited ground game. I can hear it now, "Wot! Fight of the Night for Pearson. NOT Anderson flippin' Silva! Cor, that's a bit of alright."
Knockout of the Night went to Nogueira for knocking out Brendan Schaub.
Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami - if only Okami hadn't stayed in the pocket, facing Anderson looking for the right time to strike, he might not have ended up eating the punch that dropped him to the ground where Anderson finished Yushin with more strikes. Sweet victory in front of the home crowd. TKO win for Anderson Silva.
Shogun Rua vs. Forrest Griffin - Forrest often says that he doesn't know he's in a fight until he gets punched. Last night, that first good punch was a strong right hand. KO win for Shogun Rua.
Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Brendan Schaub - Nogueira swung a heavy right hand followed by a flurry of punches. Nogueira knocks out Brendan.
Russ Pearson vs. Edson Barboza - Technical Muay Thai match with Barboza winning by split decision.
Luiz Cane vs. Stanislav Nedkov - The only Brazilian to lose on the main card. TKO win for the Bulgarian. The Brazilian fans went silent.
I was wrong on both of these fights. Two people leaving comments on my Picks From Fight Chicks UFC 134 post, left convincing reasons for why Palhares would win. And they were right.
Rousimar Palhares vs. Dan Miller - This battle of the BJJ black belts at 185lbs featured two strange things. First, Dan Miller had his mum in his corner. So funny to see her standing on the stool and leaning on the cage. Secondly, at one point, Palhares thought the fight was over after ground and pounding Miller. But it wasn't. Herb Dean, the ref, didn't stop the fight. Then Palhares got rocked. But Palhares is a beast. Well done, Rousimar. Unanimous decision win.
Thiago Tavares vs. Spencer Fisher - Another Brazilian wins. Tavares by TKO.
Brazilian Super Cop, Paulo Thiago vs. David Mitchell - unanimous decision Thiago.
Brazilian Johnny Eduardo (3 time champion in Muay Thai) making UFC debut vs. Raphael Assuncao at 135lbs. Assuncao wins by unanimous decision.
Erick Silva vs. Luis Ramos - two more Brazilians, with Silva delivering a quick overhand right to TKO Ramos at 40 seconds of the first round.
Yuri Alcantara vs. Felipe Arantes - The more experienced fighter, Yuri vs. Felipe making his UFC debut. Two confident Brazilians displaying excellent Muay Thai kicks and elbows. Unanimous decision and a 12 fight win streak for Yuri Alcantara.
Yves Jabouin vs. Ian Loveland - Canadian Yves Jabouin winner by split decision. Yves snapped out some nice leg kicks.
On the Picks From Fight Chicks for UFC 134 post, MMA fighters Stefanie Guimaraes (Bellator) and Tami Love Carswell both predicted Anderson and Shogun to win. Their prediction: "With his amazing accuracy, we expect him (Anderson) to tag Yushin coming in or get him by striking with a precise angle calculation."
As far as my fight picks are concerned, I should have made it easy on myself and gone with all Brazilian picks. The facebook prelims featured talented Brazilians battling against each other. Only luck would have had me chose the winner for those matches.
