UFC Live 5 results and fan reaction: Lytle submits Hardy
UFC Live 5 took place in Milwaukee, WI on Sunday, August 14, 2011 with eight preliminary matches shown free on Facebook and four main card fights shown free on Versus. It was an incredible night of great fights.
UFC President @DanaWhite tweeted bonus information: "FON (fight of the night) and SUB go to Lytle - KO of the night cowboy - they won 65k! Thank u Chris Lytle for 9 years of WARS and CLASS!!"
UFC Owner @lorenzofertitta tweeted "Will not cut @danhardymma I like guys that WAR!!!"
Here are the results for each match.
Dan Hardy vs. Chris Lytle: Lytle announced his plans to retire at the weigh-ins, making it official by handing UFC President Dana White a letter before his stare-down with Dan Hardy. Hardy entered the cage facing what might be his last fight with the UFC with three losses on his record. Three rounds of heavy handed punches were thrown in an MMA boxing match and then, in the final minute, Hardy took Lytle down. Bad move. Hardy ends up getting submitted. Lytle wins by guillotine choke submission.
Jim Miller vs. Benson Henderson: Former WEC Lightweight Champion Ben "Smooth" Henderson wins in spectacular fashion over Jim Miller, breaking Jim's seven fight win streak. Ben dominated Jim Miller with heavy punches, pushing him up against the fence and completely wearing Jim out. Henderson wins by unanimous decision.
Donald Cerrone vs. Charles Oliveira: Oliveira is only 21 years of age. I'm looking forward to seeing his development. Whenever Cowboy fights, I usually pick him to win. This time, in my fight predictions, I said a draw for these two. I should have trusted my instincts and picked Cowboy to win. Cowboy wins by ground and pound TKO.
Duane Ludwig vs. Amir Sadollah: Amir and "Bang" Ludwig kick-boxed for three rounds. Both men demonstrate hard heads with heavy punches flying back and forth. @ACCBiggz tweeted in response to UFC Commentator Joe Rogan saying, "It's not the Amir Sadollah we're used to." - That's because Bang has hit him… hard… and a lot." Unanimous decision for Duane "Bang" Ludwig.
Jared Hamman defeated C.B. Dollaway - Jared's stand-up got the better of the wrestler. Hamman, who trains with Antoni Hardonk, Dutch kick-boxer and Vladimir "the Janitor" Matyushenko, wins by TKO.
Joseph Benavidez defeats Eddie Wineland - Eddie, the former WEC bantamweight champion, lost to Urijah Faber in March 2011. Benavidez trains with Faber's Team Alpha Male. Wineland has a 4" reach advantage over Benavidez, but it was Wineland who ended the first round bleeding from his nose and the top of his head. Benavidez switched stance which constantly kept Wineland guessing. Unanimous decision Benavidez.
Ed "Short Fuse" Herman, TUF season 3 defeated Australian Kyle Noke from TUF season 11. Noke wins by heel hook submission.
Ronny Markes defeated Karlos Vemola - Brazilian BJJ champion takes down the wrestling champion, Vemola, who is from the Czech Republic. Tough night for the handsome Vemola who kept tugging at his compression shorts pulling them down - too small on the thigh maybe? Markes wins by unanimous decision.
Jimy Hettes defeated Alex Caceres - Hettes came in with an 8-0 record to face TUF season 12 veteran Bruce LeeRoy aka Alex Caceres (5-3). Alex sported his signature afro pick and big smile. This was a busy fight with judo throws and multiple submission attempts. Hettes defeated Caceres by RNC submission.
Cole Miller defeated T.J. O'Brien - In a battle of the tall and skinny people (155 lbs and 6'1" and 6'2"), O'Brien had a 4" reach advantage. Given how tall both men are, I would have liked to see more level changes with shots to the body from both opponents. Beautiful finish from Cole Miller with a one-handed guillotine choke submission. Cole left the cage with his BJJ brown belt draped over his shoulder.
Jacob Volkmann defeated Danny Castillo - unanimous decision for Volkmann. Team Alpha Male's Urijah Faber was in Castillo's corner.
Edwin Figueroa defeated Jason Rinehart - TKO for Figueroa who wore Muay Thai shorts, finished Rinehart with ground and pound.
