“The Ultimate Fighter 11” coaches? Tito Ortiz wants to coach opposite Forrest Griffin

  • Print

LAS VEGAS With the 11th season of the UFC's reality series set to begin taping in just two months, one hopeful has already pleaded his case for a coaching slot. And he has an additional fighter in mind for the rival team.

Soon after a close split-decision loss to Forrest Griffin in the main event of Saturday's UFC 106 event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Tito Ortiz said he and Griffin should take the slots and then meet in a season-ending fight that would serve as the duo's rubber match.

"It'd be awesome," Ortiz said. "We'd break records with that one."

Ortiz and Griffin first met in 2006. Ortiz picked up a split-decision win and delivered the "TUF 1" champion his first loss in the octagon. Three years later, with a UFC 106 headliner between heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin scrapped and in need of a main event, UFC officials promoted the co-headliner between Ortiz and Griffin to the top spot.

Griffin won the second go-'round, but it wasn't without controversy.

"I'm pissed because I didn't have my hand raised at the end," Ortiz said. "I thought I won. … I thought I took the first two rounds."

The judges split 29-28 scores between the two fighters, but a third awarded a shutout to Griffin, 30-27.

Ortiz, returning from an 18-month layoff due to a back injury and surgery and a clash with UFC management, was in a joking mood in the post-fight press conference. But his continual pleas for the coaching slot were quite sincere; he really wants the gig.

"Dana and I talked before about possibly another (coaching stint on) 'The Ultimate Fighter,'" said Ortiz, who coached opposite Ken Shamrock on a third season of "TUF" that was the highest rated until the current heavyweights-only 10th season. "I don't know. It's in Dana's hands."

And White's thoughts?

"I don't know," he said while slightly chuckling at Ortiz's pitch. "I don't know. We'll have to look at it. We'll see."

Regardless, White thinks there's a case for Griffin vs. Ortiz III, whether it comes in early 2010 or in the summer after "TUF 11" runs its course.

"There possibly a rubber match possible," White said.

In addition to winning the first season of "TUF" (and defeating Stephan Bonnar in a finale that White continually cites as the most important fight in UFC history), Griffin coached against Quinton Jackson on "TUF 7" and produced the show's champion, fellow UFC 106 fighter Amir Sadollah.

So, would he be open to another season?

"Yeah, sure," he said. "I think me and Tito have the same strategy, which I think I kind of got on board before Tito. It's do what Dana says. That's what's best for you. That's pretty much been the strategy for the last five years of my life, and it's worked out pretty good. So I'll keep doing that."

The 11th season of "TUF," set to debut in April 2010, features middleweight and light heavyweight fighters. A recent "TUF 11" open tryout netted nearly 300 applicants, including notables such as former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth, who appeared on the first season of "TUF," and fellow UFC veterans Nick Thompson and Logan Clark.

Sources close to the show, which could undergo some format tinkering in 2010, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) a few names have been discussed for "TUF 11" coaching slots but that nothing has been set. Additionally, with four of the UFC's five title pictures in a bit of disarray due to injuries, officials are hesitant to put another championship on hold by booking a title-holder and challenger on the show.

That could open the door for coaches such as Ortiz and Griffin, who have large fan followings and the type of personalities that translate well on the show (but don't immediately factor into the title picture).

However, for a show already criticized for its recent staleness, would recycling former coaches and hyping a third fight between them really be the answer to the problem? That's going to be a paramount concern if UFC officials consider the two fighters for coaching slots.

Tito just has to have attention he and I get tired of hearing him talk how he's the best
the only reason he lost is he got robbed, know his head is split, know still back issues
he did ok got winded and on his take downs if he would of tryed to crush Forrest would of got the rounds...I thought it was just ring rust... but like he said right before his head and backand fighting a top fighter first fight back he makes no excuses.....
Forrest just pushed the fight a lil more and dominated the pace thats why he lost
was a good fight next fight will be 10x's better .....but not sure I want to see them on TUF again......think they both need to just focus, train, one fight at a time both are on a come back... good luck

Good God, how many of you clowns work for Dana, or are fighters? There are too many people saying they would watch this crap again for $50. Got to be lots of you employed by the UFC (WWE/WWF).

it is what it is Tito. 0-2 vs. Griffin it is what it is. you wanna be Dana's #1 bichpuppet again it is what it is. never happen, you maybe a legend in your own mind but a ticket seller, I think not .it is what it is. I would rather see you fight Anderson Silva at a catch weight . it is what it is Afterwards your mouth would be wired up for months and we wouldn't have to listen to you anymore. it is what it is by the way, it is what it is

    I say they need to drop the house drama and focus on the training/fighting. I can think of two ways to do this;

    1) Have a super grand prix. 128 fighters competing. Screw whose team they're on or where they live during the show. Just get the best 128 fighters they can find for a single division. The 64 winners of the first round get to stay (in houses they can leave when not training, with books and tvs etc). Bring in the best coaches from the different disciplines to train eveyone, like in the first season. For the first half of the season the show is just the highlights from fights like they did for the seasons where they had to fight to get in. Winners of exciting fights get interviews/bio pieces. Then full fights for the last 16 fighters, with more training/personal stuff, but no house antics.

    2) Basically the current format, but less house antics/drama. Add more training footage (maybe even keep whole 1-2 minute segments of the coaches teaching a particular move) and maybe add some sort of training-based challenges to decide which team chooses the match-ups for that week, like each team selects a member to face each other and see who can get more TDs or go longer through a strength and conditioning drill, or punch the hardest in x number of tries (using the machines that measure force generated like on the show Fight Science) etc.

Basically, make the show more about MMA and less "Real world"

Yeah, that would suck. I don't want to see Tito's huge head on the screen anymore. He's sounding pretty damned desperate. Trying to milk his fame for all it's worth. Don't do it Dana! I won't watch another season if you do!

WTF!?! Is the UFC strapped for fighters? Why are they recycling coaches? And why are former UFC fighters allowed to compete? Former TUF losers are allowed too?? I agree with whoever said they should get every fighter they can and fight it out like they used too, to get into the show! This season basically sucked. There have been maybe two fights that I actually liked, maybe two. I was a Kimbo fan and was hoping he would do well, he hasn't. I am now just hoping someone, anyone, takes out Roy. Really don't care for him. Not a hater, just don't like any of his "technique". Good luck TUF! Peace

I think the coaches for the next season will be Lesnar/Carwin; thus giving Brock more time to recover from his medical issues but still getting out in the public eye a little. Assuming he does recover and fight again, this could put off his next fight until next fall/winter, which should allow a full recovery and training camp. Unlike the other champions, Lesnar likely needs this time before his next fight anyway. Plus, putting these two coaches in the show would mean ratings because of Lesnar, and an enhanced profile for Carwin. There are some obvious drawbacks: 1 they don't need TUF to sell this fight, and 2 Will Lesnar return and when?

Otherwise I do like the Griffin/Ortiz TUF idea, I just think it might be too soon for that, give the guys some fights elsewhere at 205 before an extended program to rematch them again.

oh so now I get it. Griffin will be a coach as the UFC tries to make us forget how he quit, won fight of the night (even though he ran), and got a main event in his next very fight.

    Is Forrest related to Dana?

id rather have two coaches that did very well come back than a coach that is entertaining but doesnt know how to pick and train fighters... rampage didnt do so well the first go around for TUF and this time he just made everyone who thought he could do it look stupid

both of those coaches had 3 guys each in the semi finals... id also like to see rashad evans come back for a season, he did really well with his guys too and was even worried about the other team's fighters, or matt serra who may not have picked the top two guys (one had the most experience and one just had natural strength) but still trained with his guys very well

just remember, this current season isn't going to suffer from the fact that the coaches arent going to fight... it will suffer from the fact that no one had to fight to get on the show so you didnt weed out the guys who arent ready yet, BRING THAT BACK! i loved the 8 fights in 2 episodes beginnings to the previous seasons!

well this is what i think the fight was a good fight.
when forrest came out his first like three fights were against the toughest fighter that UFC has to offer and he handled him self very well. i think he should diserve a chance at coaching

Forrest is not "really good" he got KO'd by silva who was backpedaling, and had his arms at his hips most of the fight.

Why does the UFC continue to hype and recycle losers? Both of these men have gotten destroyed already, and Griffin got KO'd earlier this year!

Forrest is really good and you gotta love Tito, but if Brock can get healthy that would be awesome. Brock and Carwin TUF 11, now that will break records.

Two TUF coaches who are willing to actually coach would be a nice change from this season's showing by Quinton "Hissy-Fit" Jackson.

it would be nice to get 2 COACHES on the show instead of 1 coach and one fighter that has shown twice he ain't a coach and doesn't have a clue as to how to pick good fighters for his team.

Both of these guys are redundant to the sport just like Couture and Colman. The UFC keeps pushing these guys to headline fights but who really wants to watch these guys? I wouldn't pay 5$ to watch these guys. I would however, watch it for free after the fact on the internet, that is about how far I would go. I can't imagine I the only person who feels like the UFC is trying to scam us with repeatedly putting guys who loose in winning positions...

Oh gawd. I'd fall asleep watching Tito talking. It's like he lost that part of his brain that holds you back from saying stuff that 's really stupid and makes no sense. If you watched the post-fight press conference, Tito talked about 1 minute's worth of stuff, but he repeated it for about 10 minutes over and over again. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

Ortiz and Griffin are already proven to be great and/or entertaining coaches - I'd love to see them both on a season of TUF.
