Mir "extremely interested" in fight with "The Spider," open to rematch with Nogueira

  • Print

SAN ANTONIO Frank Mir (12-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) may be currently planning to fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 in December, but the French striker isn't the only opponent on the former UFC champ's mind.

In fact, lessons learned in his UFC 100 loss to Brock Lesnar have led Mir to express his desire to face middleweight champ Anderson Silva in a previously rumored heavyweight superfight.

"I'm extremely interested in the fight," Mir said at Friday's post-WEC 43 weigh-in Q&A session. "I've learned that size helps people win fights. It would be nice to be on the other end of that."

Mir didn't discount the danger that Silva presents to any opponent, but he did consider himself a pretty clear-cut favorite should the bout materialize.

"With Anderson, obviously he's a great striker and he is pound-for-pound one of the best fighters in the world," Mir said. "But with my grappling, it would be a very bad night for him.

"I think there's a reason why he should just do a few exhibitions at light heavyweight and stay a middleweight."

While UFC president Dana White has openly he stated he doesn't want to see Silva move all the way up to heavyweight, Mir could potentially face another Brazilian opponent.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's UFC 102 win over Randy Couture has led many MMA observers to call for a rematch of his December 2008 bout with Mir.

Mir doesn't feel like he needs to prove himself again, but he won't shy away from the bout if the UFC puts it on the table.

"I think Nogueira wants me more than I want him," Mir said. "I don't really feel like I need to fight him. But obviously, if that fight needs to be answered again, I'm more than happy to show Nogueira that he's the same fighter that Randy fought.

"Everybody said, 'Oh, Nogueira is so much sharper now that he fought Randy.' I saw a 46-year-old man punch you in the face as many times as I punched you in the face. The only difference is he didn't knock you down."

Mir said that had he been able to deliver some of the blows that Couture landed in the UFC 102 bout with Nogueira, the Brazilian's night would have ended early.

"That's Randy Couture; he's knocked down one guy his whole career," Mir said. "He's not known as a power puncher.

"[Couture] is a great wrestler. He's a phenomenally tough guy that will just grind you to death. But if he's out-boxing you and hitting you in the face and you're not falling down, well what's going to happen when I weigh 245-250 (pounds) and I hit you with those? I saw it last December. You're going to fall down."

Before Mir can look at either of those options, he must get by Kongo. And while many have praised Mir's improved striking in recent contests, the heavyweight says he probably won't test it out against the former kickboxer.

"Honestly, I want to go out there and get a win," Mir said. "His ground game is definitely his weakest compared to his standup game. So regardless how I feel about my standup or my ground, I want to fight my opponents at their weakness."

And with all of these opponents in Mir's mind, is a rubber match with Lesnar on the horizon?

"Obviously if I go out there and improve on the things I need to improve on, I'll get an opportunity to be locked in a cage with [Lesnar] again," Mir said.

Mir is a soft 245-250. If he was in top flight shape he would weigh about 220.

lesnar doesnt have to impress anyone, he just has to win. i'm sure thats his outlook on it. does anyone have an opinion on who would win in a fedor\lesnar fight? i kind of like lesnar because he is huge and has serious potential. then there is fedor, the man is just amazing. he dominates like no other. that match will happen eventually and will surely be exciting. i'd still bet on fedor, hands down.

So with everyone on here bashing Mir where does all this respect for Lesnar come from? If Mir's a nobody (which I agree) then who has Lesnar fought that proves he's so good? He's 1-1 against Mir, and beat a 50 yr old man with a record of 16-10... i fail to see how lesnar deserves all the hype that he's getting. Outside of Fedor there really aren't that many great HW fighters out there right now. I like Carwin and hope he breaks Lesnars face but still don't see him having an all around game. Please, stop all the Lesnar nut hugging!!! If it wasn't for his size and strength he's be 1-4 cause he hasn't been that impressive in any of his wins yet.

It still amazes me how some fighters always want to mention how good they are at a certain aspect of fighting, whether it be their striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, etc. Remember, Travis Lutter said the exact same thing about his ground game and he ended up getting tapped out with a triangle choke (And that was when Silva had an injured knee). He talks about Silva's ground game as if he has none. He is a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I'm pretty sure that title is not just given earning it. I hope they do fight Silva can retire Mir like he basically did Travis Lutter.

is Mir coming down in weight?
read story on Silva and injuries and agree that Belfort should get the
right away chance....should do one more fight....and either Dan or marquiet
should get it.... besides being in the UFC for a while you should have to earn
your way.....as for Mir not a chance.....Machida would be the best match...
    only if...

fingerssfv-You have no idea what the he!! you're talking about. His striking was doing damage? You mean the one punch and one knee he landed right before he got his face pounded in? Lesnar had a great strategy: stay in half guard and control him and do damage. Simple. Go to YouTube and look up Destroying the Half Guard. It was a lot of strength, but a lot of game planning also.

Mir talking s--t about beating Nog?? Yeah congrats you bum, you beat a guy recovering from an injury...oh yeah...and a staph infection. Bottom dollar says Mir couldn't dominate Nog again. As for Mir vs. Silva...HA, Mir is dreaming. Just concentrate on not eating Congos elbows when you rolling around avoiding standup at all costs.

I can't believe that Mir thinks he's this great striker now.......Let's not be dumb here, Silva would beat slow a$$ Mir with his stand up alone. Hitting him from so many different angles with speed and accuracy, not forgetting his powerful leg kicks he would deliver to Mir. Avoiding the takedowns, Silva knocks out Mir.....fairly easy!!

If Mir wants to challenge Silva then more power to him. I personally think the fight to see right now would be Machida vs. Silva. I think the real reason Silva doesn't want that fight (not because they train together) is because he doesn't think he can win it. I have seen enough of Machida to know that he would give Silva a real run for his money.

With how much Mir got jacked up against Lesnar after how much he trash talked before the fight, you would think Mir would have learned to keep his mouth shut. I think that Mir greatly overestimates his own abilities.

Mir will never be a top HW again..He really never was..A re-match with Nog?..I say so-what..Neither will ever be champion again..UFC is losing me with these 'great fight' but no champion PPV's..Yippee,let's watch Couture lose again..or Has-been's like Belfort and Ortiz make 'comebacks'...UFC is becoming a diluted mess...A UFC fan since #1,but I will never watch or pay for a 'contender' PPV again...

Mir is a joke. Let him fight Silva and get his arse handed to him. Fight it at any weight - it's not like Silva doesn't walk around at around 220-225 anyways.

I don't think I would bet against Silva...no matter who he is fighting.

I thought Mir would have learned to keep his mouth shut...Nope. I used to like Mir because he always spoke his mind and never gave the typical answers. But now he is just being@#$%y and for no reason. Yeah, he beat Lesner once, even though it was him that was getting beat on....and he knocked out Nog. While the Nog win was impressive, he followed it up by getting clobbered by Brock again. I guess his hangover from beating Nog just won't end.

I think Hendo should get another shot at Silva, but only because Dana told him he would have it. Does he deserve it more than Vitor or Nate? Hell, I don't know.

What I think should happen is....Silva and Vitor fight. If Silva wins, he gives up his belt and the Hendo/Marqaurdt fight becomes a title fight. The winner then defends that belt against Vitor (if Vitor puts up a decent fight against Silva)

If Vitor were to win, well that makes it all easier. Silva moves up and the Hendo/Nate winner fights Vitor.

    Pretty simple.

travis ref didnt stop first lesnar vs mir fight lesnar tapped like 8 times its called a submission get your facts straight. Any remember Mir getting his ass kick by Vera imagine what Silva would so to him
Mir isnt that stellar with losses to not top names like Vera,Padepano Cruz and Wes Sims twice"]

Beverly, Travis has his "facts straight", it is you that misunderstood what he was saying: Lesnar knocked Mir down, was pounding him and Mir turned his back and then his head, and got punched once in the back of the head (even Greenberg mentioned Mir turned his head, it wasn't Lesnar's fault), and THEN the referee STOPPED THE FIGHT (no warning given to Lesnar at all), and deducted a point from Lesnar. THEN Mir went down again, and caught Lesnar's leg, and submitted him.

The "ref stopped the fight", to deduct a point, and that saved Mir, who was helpless and turning (giving up his back) away from Lesnar's beatdown. THAT is what Travis is talking about. Okay? Yes, we all know Mir trapped Lesnar's leg and got the submission win, but it was a tainted win because of that idiot Mazagatti.

Yes, I recall Mir getting whacked out my the smaller Vera, so Mir is talking out his backside about how easy it is for a larger man to win...he's looking for excuses for his getting whipped TWICE by Lesnar, only the ref didn't stop the fight the second time and give him an opportunity to continue, he just got smashed.

I have to say I think Frank Mir wins against Silva just because of sheer size and strength. Not to mention his ground game is really good. No doubt that Silva is the best fighter in the world (in my opinion) but I think that going up in weight would be a big mistake for him. I mean, there is no doubt he could handle some of the guys in the weight class but Mir usually fights at heavyweight and has a lot more power. Sounds like a very intriguing fight anyway.
