"Cyborgs" targeted for December return to Strikeforce; Evangelista eyes new weight class

  • Print

Strikeforce fighters and husband-and-wife duo Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (8-1) and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos (16-13) are both being targeted for a December return to action, and one of them may show up a little bit lighter.

Tatame.com was the first to report the possibility that both fighters may appear at a yet-to-be-announced Strikeforce event, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed with sources close to the organization that discussions are currently underway.

And while bout agreements have yet to be signed, Evangelista may compete in the welterweight division according to Tatame.com.

Evangelista made his Strikeforce debut in June. The Brazilian suffered a split-decision loss to middleweight Joey Villasenor in a lackluster performance. The defeat dropped Evangelista to just 2-5 in his past seven outings.

The 31-year-old Evangelista has also fought under the PRIDE, Sengoku, Pancrase and Cage Rage banners, among others.

Meanwhile, Cristiane looks to return to action for the first time since earning Strikeforce's lightweight female title with an August win over Gina Carano in the historic "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg" event. After a loss in her 2005 professional debut, Cristiane has since reeled off eight-straight wins.

Cristiane had been in discussions for a potential appearance at Saturday's "Fedor vs. Rogers" event, though injuries ruled her out of the event.

Strikeforce has yet to officially announce an event in December, though the promotion is rumored to be conducting a Dec. 19 event in San Jose, Calif.

For now, Strikeforce will focus on a stretch of three events in 15 days with "Strikeforce Challengers IV: Evangelista vs. Gurgel," "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers," and "Strikeforce Challengers V: Woodley vs. Bears."

I remember the first few ufc's. very few skilled fighters. Womens mma has a future someone just needs to put some time and effort into it.

Cyborg demolished Gina, who did in fact look horrible. It is a @#$% making weight, right Gina? Cyborg had a strong outing her last fight with Bezler. If female mma is to continue, promoters need to get a foe that can at least look competent with Cyborg.
