Wanderlei guarantees KO of the Night

There was a lot respect floating around the press room as the six fighters involved in three huge fights at UFC 92 were introduced. There was no trash talking until Wanderlei Silva stepped to the podium. "The Axe Murderer" didn't hide his dislike for Quinton Jackson and tried to chip away at the psyche of the former UFC light heavyweight champ:

"Dana, put my name on the check for knockout of the night."

Jackson stared straight ahead with no reaction to Silva's bold statement. He had a bored look on his face for much of the presser. Maybe he's completely serene or was Jackson putting on a face to cover something? Silva's comment comes around the two minute mark.

The bad blood between these guys started way back in 2003 at Pride 25 when Silva jumped into the ring after Jackson defeated Kevin Randleman. Silva pushed Jackson and then went crazy. Jackson looked stunned and intimidated on that night. Silva then put two dominant wins in the bank (Pride Final Conflict 2003 & Pride 28) against Jackson. Both came in devastating fashion using knees.

Jackson claims to this day that he couldn't get a fair shake with the referees in Japan. Pride had a cash cow in Silva so they did everything they could to protect him when fights went to the ground. Rampage says with the Nevada State Athletic Commission around he feels that things will be even now.

i think wandy will win by tko, but i do have to somewhat agree with page in that during their first fight i think it was there was a referee stand-up that was questionable.....but really, you kind of expected that from pride back then when one of their superstars was fighting, i.e. sakuraba for sure. but wandy won both of those fights fair and square and in dominating fashion don't get me wrong....just remember page had him down and bleeding in their first fight before a stand-up, then in the second fight page had him rocked early and won the round by wrapping up with elbows and knees on the ground only to get molested in the next round.
and by the way, i remember watching that live when wandy ran in the ring all gangsta-like.....almost thought it was one of the diaz brothers

Ah, Jackson playing the Sour Grapes Card. Should have just admitted the better fighter won and moved on. If Wandy doesn't get careless (like Ice) and walk into a bomb, he should win by stoppage. Then Jackson can go to Affliction and fight Ortiz - or be a 'commentator'... :-)

ehhhh, i take it back...even though pride has definitely been responsible for some early stand-ups and/or stoppages i think that stand-up was justified......that's not to say page wasn't making any progress, just not enough even though his gnp was doing some damage

It's been obvious in all the interviews and the tv build up that Jackson is afraid of Wandy. He seems very much like a guy that is nervous, who is trying too hard to not look like he's nervous heh. I like both fighters...both are alot of fun to watch. But I see Silva winning this one too. This will be the most interesting fight of the card for me.

Jackson is much improved since their last fight. Unlike before he's training with a legitimate camp now. Even a better camp than before the Griffin fight. His stand up is much cleaner and more technical. He's a superior wrestler. Wandy is on the back end of his career. Page needs to fire 1-2 combinations straight up the middle and duck under Wandy's wide looping punches and take him down. From there I think Jackson will pound Silva out.

how the hell is wanderlei on the back end of his career. hes 32. guys like liddell and couture made a name for themselves in there 30's (heck they didnt even start fighting till around 30). rampage fears wanderlei after those beatings he took in PRIDE. if rampage wants to go to the ground silva could still finish the fight on the ground with his underrated BJJ. rampage might be improved, but so is wanderlei. rampage may claim to have better conditioning for this fight but we wont know till the fight starts. wanderlei KO RD 2

Nah. He's too scared. He's mentally lost the fight already. And 'Page' is the worst nickname i've ever heard. Shorten a nickname by making a nickname of the nickname? Gimme a break.

These two maniacs are going to bring it - my money (literally) is on Wandy. I don't expect this to be much different from thier previous 2 fights (I hope not at least). Although I do expect Rampage to try and take it to the ground early and often. There's alot on the line for both men. I predict this fight to challenge the Kimbo Slice v Seth Petrazelli brawl for fight of the year. Can't wait for the Kimbo vs Fedor fight coming next year. Two of the finest ring tactitions we know dueling each other. Believe it!!

I dont get why Dana says that Minatauro has fought and BEAT the best heavyweights in the world, has he forgotten about the two times that Fedor put a beating on him. FEDOR is without a doubt the best Heavyweight fighter in the world period.

^^^^ What's even funnier is that you know all 6 people up there including Nog were thinking *cough cough BS Fedor* as soon as Dana White made that absurd comment.

Yeah, the back end of his career. He's an old 32. Wandy has 40 fights. Many more than Chuck or Randy. That's a lot more wear and tear. He isn't the same fighter. He's not as strong or explosive. Over his last 7 fights Wandy has 3 wins and 4 losses. His ground game is underrated for a reason. He's sumitted 3 guys. Silva does not want to wind up on the ground with Jackson on top of him. Also, I guarantee you Rampage knows how to deal with the Muay Thai clinch now. He's been training with Bisbing who knows that game very well. Rampage will knock Silva out in the first round.

Post #15 Ron M. The 40 fights is a good point but I think what matters most is how those fights played out. He's been in more wars than the US military, has been KOed nastily twice in his career but has also ran through a large portion of his opponents with little ease so it's not like every fight was a war. Horn and Travis Fulton have been in close to or over 200 MMA fights each but they dominated a ton of those fights so not much war-and tear to show for it.
32 is not ancient in MMA satandards by any mens because it typically takes about that long to become a well rounded fighter. All you can expect at that age is that his explossiveness will have slowed and so will his reaction time but based on the Jardine fight it appears neither have slowed much at all. You point out his 3-4 record in his past 7 but you fail to realize a number of important FACTS. 1) Ricardo Arona is a top 5 LHW in the world and is also the man that many will argue is the closest fighter ever to defeating Fedor. 2) that loss to Arona was immediately revenged. 3) His next opponent was at HW and was his first careert bout at HW. If you don't know the sequence of events here it is: Feodor was to enter into the PRIDE OWGP but the surgery to repair his right hand (thanks to Garry Goodridge's face) forced him to pull out. Wanderlei stepped up on short notice to replace Fedor and fight at HW where he'd never fought before. He destroyed Fujita at HW. 4) his next fight was a loss to #2 HW at the time Mirko. 5) his loss to Chuck was his UFC debut after an 8 year hiatus and it was a 2 rounds to 1 fight so was a close fight (why Wandy didn't have a shaved head for this fight is beyond me) 6) Lastly, Wand destroyed a top 10 LHW in Jardine in 36 seconds, a man who destroyed the current UFC LHW champion.
I think Wanderlei is actually stronger than he used to be because he's refined both his training and dieting. His cardio is always world class and that will not change at the age of 32 unless he reduces his cardio training or ups his cardio later in his training prep for a given fight (which he will never do). I agree that he is not as explossive as he was when he was 27 years old but he is still one of the best counterpunchers in the sport, is the most vicious LHW in he world and is one of the very few people that are actually prepared to die int eh rung/cage every time he fights. A lot of people underestimate what they have to prepare themselves for both mentally and physically to fight Wanderlei. He's not trying to win rounds or look pretty, he's trying to end you.
Out of Wanderlei's last 7 fights only 1 opponent wasn't ranked and it was Fujita who was considered a top 15 or so HW at the time they fought and Wand crushed him. You cna go down the list of every fighter in the world and pull their last 6 ranked opponents and guess what FEDOR is the ONLY fighter who has won his past 6 fihgts vs ranked opponents. Not even Anderson, Penn, GSP or Nog can make such a claim so it's not a knock on WAnderlei that he didn't win his past 6 fights vs ranked opponents inlcuding the #2 ranked HW in the world.
Your logic as usual = FAIL.

Hey Dana F, thanks for supporting my point. Silva can't beat the top ranked fighters anymore. The name of game is winning. No one cares if you have fought top ranked fighters or not if all you do is lose to them. Silva hasn't been the same fighter over the last couple of years. He didn't look to vicious in the Henderson fight. Henderson destroyed him. Chuck beat him up for 3 rounds. Gotta disagree with the counterpuncher argument too Didn't see much effective counterpunching against Liddel. Just wild roundhouse puches. Silva has always had problems with good strikers and wrestlers and Rampage is very good at both. Dana come talk to me after Rampage knocks Silva out. I wouldn't even put Silva in my top five LHW in the UFC.

I will just say that Rampage is human after all. Who would blame him if he is going into this fight with the knowledge that he lost to this guy twice in devastating fashion?
What is important is that Rampage should be much better and wiser since then, when he fought Silva's fight and not his own.
Silva wants and thrives off of throwing hands back and forth. Rampage needs to take Silva out of his game and counter and take downs.
