When WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner won controversially over Donald Cerrone due to an illegal knee, Varner walked away from the fight with both his belt and a broken hand. That was on January 25. Now, five months later, the hand is still broken. Varner twittered the state of his hand today, and the chances of a rematch with Cerrone anytime soon look slim.

"We're still waiting on the medical reports, but it looks like Varner won't be fighting in the foreseeable future," Dave Sholler, a WEC representative, said. "We're moving forward with the lightweight division, and we haven't ruled out an interim belt."

That news may seem good for Cerrone, but he has not been shy about his wish for a rematch with Varner. After his June 7 win over James Krause, Cerrone said that, "If I see [Jamie] Varner in the street I'm going to punch him in the mouth ... with his nice shiny suit."

UPDATE: Cerrone, currently on vacation in Colorado, thinks that an interim belt would be appropriate.

"They have to do something. He can't just have a belt and not defend it. I certainly think I'd be in line for it," Cerrone said. "I think he keeps just stepping back and waiting for other guys to beat me so there won't be a rematch."

Cerrone is open to fight anyone since he can't fight Varner.

"I want to fight him because he's such a douchebag, but I'll fight whoever they tell me to."

Um, the typo and terrible grammer posted in the image above is Varners'. What are the bloggers here supposed to do, call him up and tell him to go back to Grade 9?

Hopefully, this leads to rematch between Cerone and Razor Rob for an interim Lightweight Title.
    Or
Take this opportunity to eliminate the last redundant division.

5 months for a broken hand? I dont think so. I've done it twice and its a 8 week injury. Varner has no credibility after his lame excuses in the last fight.
Post the doctors note dude. Until then, we just think you're afraid of Cerrone. Like you were 5 months ago.

Hey what about the eye? You know, the actual reason he said he could not continue. I have followed up on it a lot and have yet to see anything about the eye. Well wait, I did see a story about how one doctor said it was fine and then Varner said he was getting a second opinion and he thought it might be career ending (he thought this after the first doctor said it was fine LOL), but that is all. Oh and I would love to hear from Ron M (I think that is what his name was), you defended Varner so much, do you still say he ended the fight due to an illegal knee? Or have you figured it out that he took the easy way out?

Why the hell are you guys training at full contact anyway. Sparring is supposed to be half contact, but full speed. Damn you aren't supposed to be trying to destroy each other. I think that it is unprofessional for fighters to not be cleared because training injuries.

Maybe Varner could get the same thing done to his hand as Urijah Faber just did? That would speed up his recovery.

I hate to judgemental, but Varner really does seem like a monumental douche. Then again you never know, he could be cool and Cerrone could be the douche. People in cowboy hats are often douche's.

Math I'll give you that I know alot of people from the same areas as Cerrone who have the same cowbiy mentality and yeah most of them are annoying but still have their cool points. what I'm wondering is who the hell they put him against. he beat Razor and there aren't really many othe top ranked dudes at 155 in the WEC

Give Cerrone Ben Henderson or Anthony Pettis, they were both impressive in their last fights and only have one loss between them, if not ship in someone like they always do for Torres.

I hate to bag on Varner cause you never know the injury may be legit and if the doc say no go then the athletic commission will say no go. SO maybe it is not really his fault. Still I do not know, he said he couldn't go on after an illegal knee, to the ear. Replay make it look like his head to no real impact at all. So it would appear he is ducking out of the fights. I try to give a hard working fighter a benifit of the doubt though

It will be Cerrone/Henderson, should be a nice stand up war with Cerrone winning by KO
