UFC: Sylvia out, Fedor in?

UFC president Dana White said the company had released one big-name heavyweight from his contract while admitting interest in arguably the biggest heavyweight name of all.

White said the UFC released former heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia from his contract with one fight remaining on it. The move made Sylvia a free agent and he is expected to sign a contract with M-1 Global, where he would be teamed with his agent, M-1 Global chief executive officer Monte Cox.

But White said that the UFC is again interested in landing former Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko. Emelianenko had a very public dalliance with the UFC last year, only to spurn the company in favor of the newly formed M-1 Global.

That sparked a torrent of abuse from White toward Emelianenko.

But M-1 has conceded that Emelianenko never signed the agreed upon contract and that he was a free agent. Elite XC has made no secret of its desire to sign the many man feel is the best fighter in the world.

White said Friday that he would attempt to reach a deal with Emelianenko, who is 27-1 with one no-contest and owns a pair of victories over current UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Randy Couture, who holds the UFC heavyweight belt, is in the midst of a lawsuit with the UFC largely because of Couture's desire to fight Emelianenko. The UFC has refused to co-promote an event with another promoter and would only do it if Emelianenko signed a promotional contract with it.

On Friday, White never mentioned Couture by name, but said he would be open to the fight.

"We want to make the fights the people want to see," White said. "If there is a fight that we can make for him that people really want to see, then we'll try the best we can to get that done. We'll see what we can do as far as (signing Emelianenko) goes."

White is finally seeing the benefit $$$ of doing a joint promotion if necessary to make money and to promote multiple heavyweight matchups by bringing Fedor into the mix. Bringing in Fedor gives him a challenger for Randy, a challenger for Noguiera, and they can throw the new breed of heavyweights at Fedor.....Without Fedor, no Randy, no Noguiera matchup no intrigue in the heavyweight division....lost opportunity.
White has to be a big enough man to apologize to Fedor for his offensive comments if he truly wants to negotiate with him and get the deal done quickly before Fedor signs with Cuban or one of the other mma organizations that has a network contract. This will give him leverage to do a TV deal if the fights take off on the major networks.

Fedor has no desire to face top competition.
He wants to cherrypick opponents, choosing fights that pose the least risk for the maximum payoff.
It's smart, and it's what I would do if I were a pro fighter.
So expect to see Fedor continue fighting circus acts and nobodies in the future.

Fedor's not smart its just being a puss. he needs to take randy up on the challenge or stay away from fighting al together. no one likes fighters who just fight nobody's.

Couture is the smart one. He's the champ and deserves big money to fight against Noguiera, not Emelianenko. After that Mir should get his last chance. Lesner should be yelling for another match with anyone who'll fight. I think Emelianenko is really a wisher who had the skills to beat those in Pride but doesn't have the balls to be the true MMA world champion. The real MMA world champions are the champions of the UFC and to be the true world champ, you should have to go through them.

Mir was Lesnor's first fight. Give him time to learn. I am not saying Lesnor is going to to win the championship tomorrow but what him work his way up. Mir could him in a suprise arm bar up til that point he was getting ground pounded had the ref not split them he would have pound Mir to a knock out. I would like to see that fight happen again and see what happens after Brock is in the swing.I think the out come would be different.

White's dreaming if he thinks that he can insult Fedor, give into none of his requests such as a more open contract that will allow him to fight in DREAM for instance, and still sign him. He has already committed to doing more shows in Japan, so unless the UFC is going to do a 180, they'll get no further now than they did before unless it's a one-fight type of deal.

I've never heard of Vanderlei Silva, but a PRIDE fighter named Wanderlei Silva came to the UFC and put on one of the greatest fights of all time against one of the greatest fighters of all time. So I believe 22 is a clown. I remember these guys named Rampage and Antonio Nogueira came over from PRIDE once and won the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight titles. Anderson Silva fought in PRIDE before the UFC and he is the best fighter in the world...
You need to get a little less "Twiztid" you Juggalo clown and learn some facts before typing your worthless, meaningless drabble. They are all Mixed Martial Artists and it does NOT matter where they made their careers, but you probably listen to Twiztid, so...
    Die.

Bravo!! Tristan P!! Bravo sir!!! I can't follow that comment any better. All of this Sylvia stuff is just lame. Almost as lame as his fights but he did defeat Andre twice when he was at the top of his game. That is the only credit Tim gets. The Randy vs Dana (UFC) thing is also lame and may just be nothing but hype once the UFC signs a one fight deal with Emelianenko for the biggest payday in MMA history. Kinda like boxers fake fights before the fight and much like WWE. Bravo again #25.

Sylvia's best days have come and gone ever since he got busted for taking steroids. He's no longer the feared striker he once was. The crowd boos him, the fans don't like him and his fights are bo-o-o-ring! So it made good business sense for Dana White to drop him. It's like the Miami Heat trading an old, worn down and overweight Shaquille O'Neal for a younger, faster and tradeable player in Shawn Marion. You free up excess cash and invest in the future. Definitely, hype or no hype, Feodor is the MMA fighter everyone wants to see. He's beaten a lot of great fighters in their prime although lately he's been taking on poor quality opposition except for the 180 pound Matt Linland. Im sure if the UFC does sign Feodor, he will ask for a tune up fight before the marquee showdown with Randy Couture. If this fight does get off the ground, it will be the biggest gate in MMA history. But I agree with Dana that Couture will destroy Feodor. The Octagon is Randy's world. Once Randy has him in his underhooks, backed up against the fence, there will be no escape. I see a brutal takedown and a ground and pound barrage that will end the fight faster than people expected. Randy will thrash Feodor and it will be worth it!

Fedor will probably end up going to Elite XC and fighting Kimbo Slice on one of CBS' telecasts and it will draw huge numbers and Fedor will have his way with Slice and then both careers will be shattered due to a loss of confidence on Slice's part and a loss of respect for Fedor for running to the big payday and fighting someone who doesn't have the chops once again.

as screwed up as boxing is the one thing that it has over mma is that the governing bodies, i.e. ibf, wba, wbc and so on, dont have a roster and only fight certain guys, mma should do the same. instead of having organizations that only fight guys under contract they should all come up with title belts and let promoters set up fights. that the only way the fans will get to see the fights that they really want

Trust Dana White to do what he feels will is best for his brand of MMA, not whats overall best for the fighters. Who wouldn't want to see a Fedor - Couture match? But the problem's going to be White, always! I wonder just how he'd do on his own reality show. Did someone say, "tapout"! (^_^)
Also, stop all the Brock Lesnar hate-on. Time will prove me right on this one. He will one day soon, hold the heavy weight belt. And, that will long be a day to remember!

Folks, Dana may be a punk when negotiating with fighters. But, he's not stupid. Signing Fedor ... no matter what it takes ... puts the biggest fight in te history of MMA in the Octogon and settles his legal dispute with Couture. White wins ... ends Couture fiasco and huge payday. Couture wins ... fight he wants to define his career. Fedor wins ... big payday and the title.

LESNAR? yeah right Every true MMA fan knows that Kimbo Slice is just a maketing tool cuz of internet hype Yeah Lesnar would beat him but Fedor would absolutely destroy both. Like me alot of people dont like Dana White or Feel that the UFC is trying to take over MMA like WWE took over wrestling but honestly theUFC does have the premiere fighters thats why the need to sign Fedor & someone who is overlooked From Pride is Josh Barnett UFC should look to sign him also, & it may just be me but at 205 UFC should put Rampage Jackson against Houston Alexander that would be a good fight.
