Barry Bonds is desperate to get back on the baseball field. So much so that his $15-18 million asking price is now down to the major league minimum. His agent Jeff Borris told Ryen Russillo of ESPNRadio that Bonds would play this year for the minimum salary. Borris said, "What other option does he have?"

Is fighter Tito Ortiz going to face a similar fate in the MMA world? This is not to say Ortiz has been involved in a drug scandal like Bonds but the slugger is out of baseball as much for his attitude as the steroid mess. Ortiz may be developing the reputation that he's a guy who is impossible to work with.

For some reason, he went public with the claim that he had a done deal with Affliction. MMARated spoke with Affliction COO Michael D. Cohen and it sounds like the upstart MMA company is feeling some UFC-like frustration.

"I can't disclose that," said Cohen, when asked about how much money Ortiz was looking for. "Let's just say it was more than ANY league could afford. What Tito was asking for was unreasonable and unrealistic."

Even if the two sides could come to a deal, it appears that the Oct. 11 Affliction 2 card is out for a Ortiz debut

"Again, the issue is even if we do sign Tito in the very near future, do we want him to fight on the October 11th card? Tito needs to train, he needs to be in the best possible condition he can be and the longer it takes to solidify the agreement, the shorter the time period is for him to do what's necessary to be in the best shape he can be in.

Cohen didn't seem upset when hearing the news that Ortiz may be speaking with the UFC about a return but did say it was surprising considering the bad blood between the fighter and UFC president Dana White. He added that there's no way UFC would pay Ortiz the amount he had asked for from Affliction.

MMARated's Ariel Helwani also discovered that Ozzy Osborne will fill the gaps during breaks at the Affliction 2 card in Las Vegas.

Ortiz could be making a wise business move by biding his time. EliteXC and Affliction may need an Ortiz infusion if things are headed in the wrong direction to start 2009. Of course, the wrong direction could mean they're out of business. How long is too long for Ortiz to wait to get a huge deal?

No matter where Tito goes he will never get a big contract deal that he' s hoping to get. Put it this way you only get more for you performance and popularity. In this case Tito has lost his fans in more ways than one. Even since AFFLICTION and UFC see that he "may be developing the reputation that he's a guy who is impossible to work with."

    inevitable.
same thing is going to happen to randy coutoure. thats why these guys are asking for millions of dollars for ONE fight. these guys dont plan on making a career out of MMA, they already did that. these are guys that want to give one last fight, and get a huge payday out of it.
id hate to be the one to say it but MMA fighters arent going to be making millions of dollars per 1 fight any time soon. they have the potential to make a million in one years time, with a few fights within the year. but not in 1 fight. the real money is in sponsers, or movies, or books, etc. but they have to have a personality.

After Tito coached on TUF, I had totally changed my opinion on him. Before, I couldn't stand him. Tito is totally screwed in terms of fighting. He wants to be the big name and make the big money, but no other organization besides the UFC can give it to him. Elite XC and Affliction are bound for bankruptcy and unfortunately, there will be a lot of good fighters with no place to go....I know...I know...Kimbo still has the internet gig...yeah..yeah...he has kids to feed.

I think one of these organizations should give Tito a chunk of ownership. He will fight and get money through ratings....and when he decides not to fight, he can use his money hungry energy to promote....kind of like Dana White.....Hey, maybe they are the same person......Has anyone ever seen them together??

okay this thread is proving better.. a chance to bash Tito for a while (until all the Kimbo bashing starts LMAO.. for someone who is "ruinin' MMA" he's all anyone wants to talk about)...
First of all, I'm not mad at Tito for trying to secure his future. When you realize the fact that the majority of MMA fighters are making 4 figures a fight (that's in the 1000s for you slow types LOL) if it wasn't for sponsorships these guys would be starving. Now with that being said, Tito is seriously over playing his hand though and over estimating his value. I don't think the whole him being perceived as a d!ckhead hurts him in fighting.. the whole good guy, bad guy thing sells in fighting (and WWF/E), but he's not worth the 7 figures that he's tryin to get. He should cash in on his celebrity, but he just needs a reality check.
Tito is still a draw althoug I don't believe him to be a top fighter anymore. I don't think that Kimbo could beat Tito right now though Tito's ground game and cardio would be too much for Kimbo (like I said before if JT can hold him down Tito can).
Anyway to me the answer is CROSS PROMOTIONAL EVENTS... why aren't there more cross promotions? UFC and Pride have done it, Strikeforce and Elite XC have done it. Look at all the orgs that have failed EFL, IFL, bodog, Pride (I know it was reborn in dream but still) Elite XCis on the ropes... I don't want the UFC to have a strangle hold on MMA (although I still say any league where bobby southworth is a champ is a joke but anyway)...
shout out to Derrick, Unwrecked and even jtakeo w/ your crazy over hyped fan azz LOL

...point in case... Tito couldn't do anything to actually FINISH Machida, even when he had him DEEP for a second, because he has never advanced his little fight strategy past getting to the ground and throwing elbows. obviously it hasn't worked for him too well, but he is so into himself he just can't change. ...not like i ever accused that idiot of being smart and having balls; of course.
but he DID have him deep for a hot second, and i guess just thought the guy would have tapped to the "MIGHTY TITO" (LMFAO) instead of actually working to MAKE the guy tap.
    he's a joke.
the best thing he will ever do would be to put out a porn with that nasty skank, but he doesn't want to show everyone he's got the World's Smallest Balls, so that'll never happen. if it does, then i know there are plenty of idiot losers out there who would actually waste money on that crap... then turn around and whine about gas prices being too high. LOL

tito is just really confused. all of a sudden he thinks hes some kind of big time business man or some kind of big star. youre a fighter,( not much of one anymore) so just fight dumb as$. i think its a good thing that the ufc isnt paying their fighters like boxing does or every other pro sport for that matter. nobody deserves that kind of money. its stupid. what, $60,000 isnt enough for one fight? jesus, thats a good year for most people. fight 3 times a year and youre looking at 6 figures just to fight. wow, tough gig. americas athletes and society totally have our priorities f'd up. dont get me wrong i love sports, i was an athlete growing up and in college, but its out of control anymore. money money money, theres just never enough

but I still do think Tito licks balls.

tito ortiz is a joke. he can't fight anymore, just look at his fights the last couple of years...its a sham. lets be realistic, the only thing good left about tito isn't his fighting skills, but for this:
    jenna jameson
biggest shiat talking mouth MMA (good for promoting a fight in which he can't perform and gets his arse kick)
tito can go to hell! who cares bout tito. tito's best chance to make money is if he and jenna jameson makes a porn dvd and sell it outside UFC and Affliction's stadium the day of the fight. also he has to price the dvd for under 3 dollars! maybe $2.99 or best offer!!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! People get an effing clue! The last UFC PPV they were asking for several hundreds of dollars to sit ringside when Tyson fought Lennox Lewis they were asking $8000.00, $3000.00 for Okay seats and a grand for the nosebleed section. There is a difference. Two, the UFC gives us fantastic match-ups during the early fights which I have never seen in a boxing PPV. I usually get an up-and-comer against a never-was-never-will-be. Boxing has had their glory days and is dying a slow and miserable death, while UFC/MMA entertainment continues to grow and expand. It will take at least a decade for the latter to reach the expense that boxing incurs, if ever.

Poor Tot Ortiz(regualr readers will know why I called him Tot), he just needs to take what he can get and stop doing it for the money and the passion of fighting. He hasn't been the same fighter since he started making it about the money.

Tito is asking for WAY more money for 2 reasons:
#1 - he doesn't want to fight anymore and is looking for one last money grab
#2 - he's trying to keep Jenna from going back to porn
    *
and now you know the truth

Does MMA really wanna follow boxing in overpaying crappy fighters to stand their and bore you to death with a decision win
Dana is a genius he doesnt have to cross promote cause in about 1-2 yrs their wont be any company left after he drives them outta business. That isnt dirty thats just good business savy

Please dont start that "Dream is better than UFC" stuff again. People did it with Pride, said they had all the great fighters and UFC fighters couldnt hang. What happened? They came to UFC, and sans Anderson Silva and Nog, they all got smashed. For the person who said fighters might have the chance to make a million in a year's worth of fights, refering to Ortiz and Couture wanting a big payday fight, fact is that big names like Ortiz, Liddell, Couture, Hughes, etc make over a million per fight because their contract gives them a percentage of the PPV.
