Cagewriter - UFC

What a weekend for fans of mixed martial arts. The Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale was loaded with great fights, so much so that the UFC handed out three Fight of the Night awards. The Diego Sanchez-Clay Guida war was at the top of the list on Saturday night. Cagewriter scored it 29-27 giving Sanchez a 10-8 first round and a 10-9 final round. Guida deserves a ton of credit for withstanding a ton of damage in that opening round. For me, the fight of the weekend was Jorge Gurgel and Conor Heun at Strikeforce on Friday night. The two were like rams meeting every 15 seconds in the middle cage slugging away each other.

Watch Round 1 of Gurgel-Heun:

Here is Round 2 and Round 3. This fight simply needs more eyes on it to get the props it deserves.

These great fights shared the same postfight exuberance. All four fighters repeatedly thanked their opponents for being so tough.

Sanchez couldn't believe Guida survived the opening onslaught where he unloaded on "The Carpenter":

"I hit him with some knees, some kicks, some uppercuts that were right on the button but he just kept on coming. It wasn't discouraging but I was like 'whoa, I gotta catch my breath. I gotta let the blood come back to my arms.' He's know for his conditioning and he came prepared."

Watch both Gurgel and Heun talk about how fun it was to beat the heck out of each other.

What was the best fight of the weekend? Did we miss completely? Was Kevin Burns-Chris Lytle better or did you prefer the technical battle between Joe Stevenson and Nate Diaz?

I still think it was a tie or guida won. I scored it 10-9 sancez rd 1 and 10-9 guida 2+3. So even if sanchez got 10-8 rd1 it should have been a tie.

Personally, I liked Lytle/Burns the best. I get tired of watching Guida dry humping, but Diego was fierce from the bottom with the elbows. That fight was 2nd, with Gurgel/Heun in 3rd. All three were fantastic fights...

lytle/burns was most entertaining, then sanchez/guida (would have won but for guida's lay and pray approach). the gurgel/heun fight was next and finally diaz/daddy (too much guida-esque laying by joe).

Everyone at my house was amazed one of the judges had Guida winning. It was a completely lopsided fight. Guida didnt land anything of significance or do anything with his few take downs.
As much as I like Guida he is really nothing more than an energetic punching bag at this point.

I do not have shotime so I am very glad to have seenthe Gurgel/Huen fight just now. What a great fight....still not better than Guida and sanchez though. Saddest thing about the showtime and strikeforce deal is that I used to see a lot of strikeforce on HD net either live or just a few days later. now I get to see none of it

With the judging, I think people forget the 10 point must system. It was quite obvious Sanchez won the 1st round by a long shot. The idea of it being 10-8 it contentious, but not crazy. The other two rounds were very close though. Most agreed that Guida won the 2nd round ,and if he had won the third, which was even closer, then it would have at minimum been a draw (assumign the judges ruled round 1 10-8, which I disagree with).
"Predictably" speaking, with the weight judges usually give to top position, I expected Guida to get the last round and either hear a draw or Guida victory. But realisticaly, Sanchez deserved the win.

Too bad you can't teach someone how to take a hit and not get knocked out...Clay would be a Grand Master.

Yes his chin is like cement as is his head. He couldn't even be at the post fight interviews at the same time because he was getting stitches. So those elbows split open his padded hard head. He has the best you can beat on me but you can't K-me-TFO.
BJ-Kenflo will have there hands full with Sanchez and will have there chins tested. Kenflo will elbow him back unlike Clay-N-Pray.

round one i had it 10-8 for diego, round 2 was a hard one, yes clay did get the take down but did little with it, he landed a few punches and maybe 2 elbows, the major work came from the man on bottom, diego cut him upwith those elbows. the third round was going for diego till clay took him down again. again he didn't do much with this, diego went for the choke, the for the kimora. the right man won

Are we still arguing about who won the fight? I thought that was addressed like three blogs ago. I thought that the Guida/Sanchez fight was the best of the weekend, with Gorgel/Heun a close second and Stevenson/Diaz and Lytle/Burns tied for third. All and all it was a pretty sweet weekend to be a fight fan.

gonna have to say Gorgel/Heun was prob a better fight all the way through, going back and forth in that slugfest through 3 rounds. although i enjoyed the smackdown Sanchez gave Guida it was more lopsided and not as consistently explosive or as fun to watch. Sanchez must have outweighed Guida by 20 lbs and it showed when he was pushing him around

People keep blabbering about this whole lay and pray thing.... you people know nothing. It's not that Clay was not being aggressive from the top, it's just that Diego was doing a great job of neutralizing any offense that was attempted. Maybe if Clay cut his hair he wouldn't be so easy to defend on the ground, it is WAY too easy to hold his head down and keep him from attacking.

How the hell can anyone say Guida won round 3? He had his back taken, was beaten on the feet, and was fighting off submissions. He hardly did anything offensive (that was effective) except for one reversal. Remember, it's about EFFECTIVE offense not just any kind of offense. Having said that, I can't see how anyone could give Guida round 2 even he did nothing with the top position he just got elbowed to hell by Sanchez. It was easy 10-9 all three rounds for Guida.
I thought Heun vs. Gurgel got better after the first round. The second round was the best but it was too much like watching amateur kickboxers without any KO power slug at each other. Kind of a guilty pleasure for some, like watching rams butt heads, but not much compared to Stevenson vs. Diaz or Sanchez vs. Guida. Best fight was Sanchez vs. Guida by far, Heun vs. Gurgel had a bit of a good first round but nothing to write home about. The second round was exciting I'll admit, but it tapered down by the third. Sanchez vs. Guida started out just with much greater intensity it was like watching a street fight in the beginning. The pace was also much faster than Heun vs. Gurgel and you saw much more skill and a variety of MMA techniques instead of Gurgel's ol' Stand and Wang. The other bad thing about Heun vs. Gurgel is that as hard as they fought you feel like you are wasting your time watching the fight in a way because Strikeforce rankings don't really mean much. Sanchez vs. Guida or even Stevenson vs. Diaz you know there are stakes, you know things are on the line and the LW title in the UFC means something. All Strikeforce fights always feel kind of pointless simply because their titles don't mean much with the possible exception of the 185 lb. title that is in limbo.

^ In the post above I made a typo in the first paragraph I mean 10-9 all three rounds for Sanchez.

Guida is the most exciting layer and prayer in the UFC today. He never improves position on top, but he keeps throwing weak hammerfists and haymakers every 20 seconds and gets touted as someone who "stifles submissions". I love his enthusiasm and endurance, but he has to learn something other than laying and praying.

Too much credit is given for a takedown. You should have to do something while your there. It's like giving points for punches thrown but not landed, they do nothing. Diego did more damage from the bottom with his elbows then Clay did the entire fight. Lytle vs Burns was the most entertaining fight of the night. I thought that fight could've ended at any second and this kept me on the edge of my seat. When Clay was on top I knew the end was not close.
