Tim Sylvia isn't the biggest fan favorite. What happens if he loses to 98-year-old Ray Mercer in their boxing match on June 13? A loss to Mercer, who claims he's really 48 but may be closer to 52, will forever brand Sylvia as the guy who embarrassed mixed martial artists. How will the casual sports and boxing fans react if they see Mercer beat a 33-year-old former UFC heavyweight champ just 26 months removed from his title reign? The ridicule will be unbearable.

Give him credit, he's confident it'll be an easy win. He's also got his next MMA fight scheduled just seven weeks later on Aug. 1 at Affliction 3 against Paul Buentello. He's risking a huge payday at Affliction 3 to try his hand at boxing. He can't be making more than $100,000 for this minor boxing card and yet he's probably due at least $300,000-$400,000 against Buentello. Sylvia made $800,000 for his 37-second loss to Fedor Emelianenko. He's almost certain to get a paycut this time around but it would less than 50-percent than his first Affliction fight?

If you think Sylvia is crazy for taking this risk wait until you hear what he said to Fighter's Only about boxing down the line:

"Its something I've always wanted to pursue and if it works out like I'd like for it too, I can switch over. I don't want to be done with MMA, but the money is a lot better in boxing."

The money is better? At the highest level, of course. With the downturn in the economy, boxers in the top 20-to-50 range are making 400-800k at best. Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver just made a combined $1.8 million. So the money's not that big in boxing unless Sylvia thinks he's fighting a Klitschko brother. Which won't and shouldn't happen. Or will it:

"Yeah absolutely, I would love to fight some of the heavyweight champs, you know? I mean the paydays are ridiculous!" he says, adding with a laugh "$10 million paydays, that is just stupid money."

We have no idea if Sylvia can be a high level boxer. The guess is no chance. His hand speed is below average and his footwork is shaky and slow. Don't even worry about him against a top 10 fighter. Could Sylvia even be competitve with fellow giant Tye Fields, who is 6-foot-8, 270 pounds? I doubt it. Boxing is different animal. It was the same as saying Fields could win an MMA fight against Sylvia.

Plus Sylvia has at least 4-5 more MMA fights left at a minimum of $150,000 per fight in the states and possibly in Japan. Drop the fascination with boxing, it's a lose-lose proposition.

The 98 year old Mercer line almost ruined me, love the way you wrote the article. I never liked Sylvia, I have been screaming since the very beginning that he was crap.

People get too caught up in this crap. Will it really make MMA or Boxing look that bad? It will be forgotten within a month. Sure the blogs will be aflutter with "I told you so's" and it will fuel the boxing versus MMA debates in the forums. Who cares? We're all just a bunch of nerds anyways. 90% of fans for any sport is the "casual fan" who is not going to read too deep into this anyways, they just want to be entertained. These people have a right to do and try anything they want to with their lives, and if someone is willing to pay them to do it, more power to them. Its not like Sylvia or Mercer are taken all that seriously in their own communities anymore. I just can't see how this is going to hurt the two sports that have brought us fights featuring Kimbo Slice, Butterbean, Canseco, Bonaduce, Vanilla Ice, Willis, even Bradys and Osmonds. How many of us would turn down $100,000 for 15 mins work?

I agree, Tim Sylvia is a decent heavyweight and he's only lost to the best heavyweights in the world, but being as disliked as he is by fans, all it will really do is give people more ammunition to attack him with. Now, if Anderson Silva were to get badly beat by Roy Jones? THAT would be embarassing, but I seriously doubt Jones would beat him...

I'll say it again, if Dana dislikes someone, so does Cofield and the rest of Yahoo's joke of a MMA staff. Sylvia is one of the few fighters with the balls to point out that Zuffa exploits its fighters a la Vince McMahon! He has beaten a lot of top heavyweights over the years and should be regarded as a top 10 MMA heavyweight of all time, albeit one of the more boring of the top ten.
I love Yahoo! Sports, but your MMA coverage is laughable!
All hail the UFC hype machine!

LOL, he thinks he can make more money in Boxing than in MMA? He is a dumbfuk! I mean only TOP guys in boxing get BIG money. I can really only see an Anderson Silva vs Roy Jones (RJJ by UD) type of fight doing well enough for both guys to get paid some handsomely. Silvia just came to the realization that nobody wants to pay to watch his goofy ass fight and is due a MAJOR pay cut in MMA and needs something else to suck at. Also, I dont see how this can cause any damage to MMA if he get blown out by a 98y/o or viscera for boxing. Both of these guys are pretty much irrelevant.

98 years old? What is that some pathetic attempt at humor? Ray is 48 not 52, a minor research would tell you this unless that was only attempt at a punchline? The last I looked Mercer was only a few years older than Randy.
Why is Sylvia risking his MMA rep by boxing an ex boxing champ? The two is irrelevant. The only thing this will prove is that MMA fighters are incomplete boxers. Sylvia will be treate like a prison b-itch the same way Mercer treated Tommy "The great white Hype" Morrison.

Hes making way more $$$$$$$$$$ so can't blame him for some lame boxing exhibition with an old man with a name to $ell some seats. He will win if he uses that reach and stays away from Mercers Power which he still has. I wouldn't pay for this but it would be a interesting match to see if Tim can box at all.

Tim has boxed at GYM level only with Marcus Davis who knows boxing but never had any amateur fights. Nutcracker there are no plans to show it but if they do it would be on HDNet since Adrenaline MMA has a contract with them.

You guys, Sylvia only cares about money. That is his first motive. He would sale his soul for 2 cents. When he was the UFC champ, he used to go to e-bay to auction off his jock strap. No joke. Sylvia does not care about ANYTHING but an immediate payday. The clown fight in boxing is not attempt to prove anything. Any MMA fight he gets is not to prove anything. He is a retard who can only make a payday by fighting or being a clown (or by selling his grandma on the corner for a nickel). Tim Sylvia has the character and integrity of a used car salesman. Make no mistake about motives!!!!

He will probably get mashed up by Mercer. Boxing vs. MMA standup are way too different.
    .
However, I think he was let go of the UFC way too soon. My guess would be that he wanted too much money for a new contract.
    .
    Whatever, he gets mashed.

There is absolutely no way Affliction, which is already hurting financially, allows Sylvia to box just 7 weeks away from him fighting for their card...unless, of course, one thing is for sure....THE FIX IS IN.
Mercer will be simply collecting a paycheck, as will Sylvia, who's "W" versus Grandpa will allow to fight at Affliction. It's a win-win-win situation.
Why in the world would Affliction risk this otherwise?
What's next? Tim Sylvia versus Ali?

If the fight was reversed and they were doing it in the cage and Sylvia got Ko'd under MMA rules..yeah..MMA would look really bad..but since they are just boxing, you eliminate the most important 'M' in the eqaution -Mixed- ...I expect Sylvia to lose...I actually hope Sylvia loses..I really just want him to go away,at least go to Japan and make cartoon fights with Bob Sapp and Kimbo...Go Mercer!
