Stann overwhelmed by veteran Soszynski

Too much, too soon for the "All-American" Brian Stann. The former Marine was the poster boy for the promotion in WEC but you can only carry a great story so far when you arrive in the big leagues. Stann was matched up against the very experienced Krzysztof Soszynski and simply didn’t have enough in his arsenal to compete.

Soszynski, an alum from The Ultimate Fighter 8, scored a takedown with 2:55 left in the first and quickly moved to mount 16 seconds later. He eventually relinquished the mount to get side control and work on his trademark kimura. He began to cinch it in around 1:20 left in the round and was tearing Stann’s shoulder apart with the arm pinned behind his back. Stann was forced to tap at 3:53 of the first.

It’s win No. 17 for Soszynski. Stann suffers his second career loss in just eight pro fights.

This bout highlights how much tougher UFC is than the other promotions. Not even close in this one.

I didn't like Krzysztof when he was pulling all those pranks on TUF, but he can fight, I'll give him that. Four big stars from the WEC have lost, Condit, Sonnen, Cantwell, and Stann. If Faber moves up to LW and fights for the UFC how will he fair? The WEC is starting to look like the UFC's little brother, getting beaten up all the time. With the exception of Torres, he looks unstoppable.

IF Stann had Mir's ground game, he would have tied old boy up in a leg/heel lock stat - that was a sloppy mount...

Im a marine and despite my bias i have been sayin for awhile that Brian Stann has not beaten very good fighters. Steve cabtwell isnt bad but...
Doug marshall? Some of the guys were small none were as strong or as athletic as him. Hes not that technically good yet... but he will be. Mark that down.. when he no longer has to be a USMC officer and all he does is train, especially with greg jackson... he IS gonna start straight killin fools.

ok now for mr jnickels... shut yo mouth fool. this tru jarhead knows several guys who are very proficient in bjj. There is no way someone my size(probably lightweight) ever pulls that kimura on me... at least not in the first. You do realize he has been training while hoding down a job that hes not allowed to just walk away from? Its pretty hard to train striking, bjj, takedowns conditioning and go to iraq and earn a silver star all at the same time. all things considered hes very good and getting better.

Both WEC LHW Champions defeated! I can't believe Stann was defeated by so basic a move as the Kimura. Wasn't he paying attention on how to defend against it?

So how is a Kimura his favorite move, if he has only used it three times out of 24 fights?

Cantwell is looking to be the better all around fighter of the two, Cane is a much tougher match than Soszynski, and Cantwell gave him a run for his money. Stann obviously needs to work on his ground game, and he needs to diversify his striking too. I'm not too surprised, he was losing to Doug Marshall when he won the title, and he promptly lost it in his rematch with Cantwell. Both guys could be pretty good but definately need time to grow.

The Polish dude is perhaps the strongest fighter at 200 lbs imo. Anyone disagree about raw strength of Soszynski?

#15 took the words right out of my mouth. Stann was never gracious in victory while fighting in the WEC. This is what turned me against him. He seems to lack an overall understanding regarding the true essence of mixed martial arts.

Stann has been out of the Marines for nearly a year now, so he is training full time. He's a good guy and a great athlete. He looked way out of his element on his back and didn't seem to even try to put up any kind of defense, he was just traying to squirm his way out of it. I knew nothing of the Polack before the fight but still knew that was his signature move, so we'll see if he gets another chance on a UFC main card again.
