In the battle for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight belt, Jake Shields won a unanimous decision 48-47, 49-46, 49-46. Despite having the Chicago crowd squarely against him, Shields employed an effective, smothering offense to grind out the win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller.

In the first round, Shields got a quick takedown, and did some damage on the ground. Mayhem got up, but then was taken down again quickly. When Miller got back to his feet, he picked Shields up for a takedown, which got a large cheer from the crowd.

The second round was incredibly close, as the two spent it mostly on the ground. Neither fighter got close to a submission, though. Miller dominated the third, sinking in a rear naked choke near the end of the round. Shields was saved by the bell, because if the round would have lasted just a few more seconds Shields would likely not have made it.

In the fourth, an exhausted Shields got a takedown but did little with it. When referee "Big" John McCarthy stood them up, Mayhem landed some kicks before Shields took him down, again. Every time Miller tried to roll out, Shields stuck to him. In the fifth round, Shields continued his attack of taking Miller down and sticking on him like white on rice. For much of the round, he had Miller's back, but when Miller did get out, he tried and quickly gave up on a guillotine.

The crowd in suburban Chicago showered Shields with boos as he walked out of the arena, but his attack was effective. After the fight, Shields said that he would fight at middleweight or welterweight, and that Cung Le, the former holder of the middleweight belt, is afraid of Shields. Le vacated the belt after pursuing a film career, but he will fight again on Dec. 19 against Scott Smith.

Not even close. he was completely ineffective minus take downs. no striking, no submission attempts, nothing. worst decision of the year. Hell even in his wrestling he could not control Miller. was reversed a dozen times and was saved in the 3rd by the bell.

shields just gave me another reason to hate him. he's no mma fighter, just a grappler.

They need to stop touting Shields as "one of the best in the world" with his jiu-jitsu. To be in the full mount or on your opponent's back for more than half of a 25 minute fight and never come close to finishing is pathetic. His takedowns are good but he is mediocre at everything else; this is the second time I've seen him fight and he's not impressive at all.

What was with Shields' back acne scars? Did he used to do roids?

I guess it at least makes me wonder about Shields vs. some of the other good welters out there, but GSP would be a tall order...Fitch would be tough, and if Shields were to try some of the guys in the UFC middleweight division, I don't see him faring well. I think he'd be an upper echelon guy at 170 even in the UFC though.

Keeping in mind Rogers was an unknown minus calling out Kimbo and taking out an unconfident AA after a fedor knock out, who did not see this coming. seriously who actually thought Rogers had a shot? Fedor is not wowing me until he steps into the ufc and cleans house. Good fight, took some hard shots, but was not exactly fighting the cream there.

Sheilds lost USM, plain and simple. that was the most ineffective win i have ever seen. never had miller in trouble, never hurt him, never came close to a stop, nothing. Strike force's card was 3rd rate. Most game fighters tonight were Miller, and Rogers though dropping his hands was STUPID.

The look on Jake's face when Mayhem had the choke was priceless! He was looking for that timer to see how much he had to hold out.

Fedor did not impress me either. Brock would destroy him. Actually Mir would beat him. If he is the best then we need some new heavyweights.

Man I'm glad UFC showed those main events tonight otherwise I'd felt really cheated. If that the best Strikefarce can pull off their in trouble. Apart from the Fedor fight it was a crappy card. Shields wouldn't stand a chance at middleweight in the UFC. I would like to see him at WW in the UFC but he couldn't hang with GSP. I like Fedor but saying he's the best ever and pound for pound best when he's taking on guys who where changing tires at Sam's Club a year ago made it to the second round with him and broke his nose is kind of ridiculous. I just wish Fedor would fight in the UFC, there would be so many great match ups to see. I mean other then Fedor fighting for the championship in Strikeforce what other good fight do they have for him? It's really a shame. I wasn't that impressed with Gayhard THE DREAMCATCHER Mousasi either. He shouldn't even be fighting unless that belt is on the line. I'm just glad it was for free, it was kind of annoying that my friends were all falling asleep and a few choose to leave early because they were bored.

the show tonight i thought was great, i want to see the best in the world and fedor is the best in the world...rogers is a very tough fighter and i think would give brock a run for his money....fedor is a giant killer and the only one who i believe has a chance against him in this point in time would be velasquez.

You Jason Miller and Fedor slugs are all alike. All hype and no show. Jake Shields "DOMINATES" for five rounds and beats Miller's ass all over the place. Miller is a joke. And then the fix of the night. I guess the show should have been called the "John Macarthy Show," because he sure ripped Rogers while he was intelligently defending himself. Fedor blows. No wonder he's dodged the UFC and best heavyweights in the world for the past five years. What a joke and CBS has no business in MMA. They're all hype and no delivery!!!!

Would like to see Fedor fight a much higher caliber, more successful opponent then Rodgers. I do not think you can give Fedor the best pound or pound when he's avoided the best in his weight class. But I was very impressed with his game, both ground and standing. May be years before we see him fight the best, if ever. Too bad...

Another example of why "champs" outside of the UFC are fake. Shields wouldn't last 2 rounds against mid level UFC fighters. His game plan worked on Miller, but that crap don't fly against UFC fighters. For a middle weight fighter, could you actually imagine what would happen to Shields if he fought Sylva? or Hendo? or Nate the Great? Please...

when is fedor going to fight a top level heavyweight.............The answer is never. his handlers won't allow it. which is why they make outrageous demands to fight in the UFC. They do not want to tarnish the legacy of their cash cow. another unimpressive win over a game but totally outclassed opponent . In order to be considered the best in the world he needs to fight the top guys in the division. those guys reside in the UFC Lesnar, Carwin, Velasquez or even Frank Mir would all be worthy opponents. Until he takes on the cream of the divsion. he'll only be the best in the eyes of the hordes adoring Fedor bumkissers. Real fans know he is a paper champion
