Sherk stripped of lightweight title

Without much fanfare, the Ultimate Fighting Championship stripped Sean Sherk of the lightweight championship. Company officials confirmed this information on Saturday before its event in Las Vegas.

Sherk, 34, had tested positive for the anabolic steroid Nandrolone, more commonly known as Decadurabolin, in his July 7 title defense in Sacramento, Calif. where he defeated Hermes Franca. Franca also tested positive for steroids during the fight.  Sherk won via five round decision. The California State Athletic Commission, unlike Nevada, doesn't have the legal authority to overturn a decision based on a positive drug test.

Sherk had appealed the test result, and on Tuesday the commission cut his one-year suspension to six months, but upheld the $2,500 fine.  Sherk is eligible to fight again on Jan. 3.

Because the appeal verdict was that his test result was not overturned, it left UFC officials with little alternative, other than set a dangerous precedent had they not decided to strip Sherk of the championship, for a company that has stated a public hard line on steroid use among its competitors.

UFC president Dana White had already booked B.J. Penn vs. Joe Stevenson for the interim championship on Jan. 19 in Newcastle, England.  Had Sherk been cleared, he would have faced the winner at the earliest possible date.  Now the Penn-Stevenson winner would be the outright champion.  It has not been confirmed whether Sherk would still get the first shot at the winner.

    Sean "The Nandrolone Shark" Sherk.
Yet another appeal from a professional athlete, and yet another conviction.
Is there anyone left in the world that thinks these guys are really innocent?

What else could they do? Penn/Stevenson will be a good fight and the winner deserves to be the champ. (They need to bring up that featherweight from WEC to fight for the title in UFC)

I don't think that featherweight in the UFC has its place, 5 divisions is enough. Why not just put midgets in the ring and let them go at it.

Sherk Vs Huerta. not a good fight for Hureta if you just saw the Huerta/Guida fight. Huerta has no take down defense and his only choices would be to keep it standing or try and submit the physically strong Sherk. But I agree with everybody else Sherk SUX. And I'd love to see Roger Huerta knock him da F*** OUT! ! ! !

Let Huerta fight Griffin. The winner of that fight move on to fight the winner of the Penn and Stevenson fight.

Huerta has more fighters to beat to earn a shot! So does Tyson Griffin!
Florian has earned the next shot. Whether you think he deserves it or not Sherk will be back to challenge for the title quickly!

Finally, MMA makes a smart move. Eliminate drugs in the sport before it is too late. Sherk was a good fighter, but a novice can tell he was "assisted". Thank you for at the least, attempting to clear up the sport. Kenny Florian will make a nice, new lightweight champ, by the way...

Wow who ever said Griffin isnt in the Lightweight division is a freaking moron. Tyson Griffin is one of the best lightweights in the world, so please if you cant keep up stay out of the conversation.

I think the lightweights will be fine without him. Did you see the show? Just add, Florian, Penn, and Stevenson to this mix and you still got a good division.
    Penn for UFC lightweight Champ!

man, the lightweight division is a mess right now. i dont think any one fighter will be able to dominate the division. Sherk will beat Huerta (it pains me to say it), what about Frankie Edgar and Kenflo? thiago tavares is still a contender. Even though he lost you cant ignore Clay, and theres talk of diego sanchez dropping to 155. its gonna be crazy

This is the UFC hype machine at work. If they didnt strip Sherk of the title then he automatically would get to fight the winner or Penn vs Stevenson next for the title back. Now since they stripped him they can throw there upcoming posterboy Roger Huerta in a title fight and when Sherk comes back they can throw him in a big non-title fight say against Kenny Florian and Tyson Griffin.

Huerta has almost 3 times as many fights as Florian and Griffin has just as many. Griffin has fought the tougher fighters, Florian already got beat by Sherk and Huerta has not been beat in the UFC. I think Huerta should get the shot and Florian vs Griffin for the next shot.
