Cagewriter - UFC

A strange thing happened to Sean Sherk since his loss to B.J. Penn, the guy has fallen off the map for many in consideration as a top 155 pounder. USAToday/Bloody Elbow's lightweight rankings only has Sherk No. 4 in the world. Included in those rankings are two sources that have Sherk No. 8 and MMAWeekly doesn't have Sherk in its top 10.

Even more odd is the fact that BE's rankings have Kenny Florian ahead of Sherk at No. 3. Sherk posted a shutout in a five round fight against Florian back at UFC 64 yet eight of the 20 services used by BE have Florian ranked ahead of Sherk. So what's changed? Sherk doesn't understand and says the love affair with lightweights fighting in Japan is also troubling:

"There are guys ranked above me, that I've seen, that I know damn well I can beat. Rankings don't mean squat. (Shinya) Aoki is a good example. He's a big 155 pounder but he's got no boxing, no wrestling. Where does that leave you in the UFC? You can't wear pants, so guess what? You're in some trouble. I'd like to see a lot of those guys come here and I think eventually they will."

Watch Sherk speak with Cagewriter about his place in lightweight division:

Sherk is hoping a win over Frank Edgar Saturday night at UFC 98 will move him further up the rankings and back into a position to challenge for the UFC lightweight title.

Sherk also talked about the new UFC video game: UFC 2009 Undisputed. He has not had a chance to try the game but he heard his character looks good. He's hoping that "video Sean Sherk" is not one-dimensional and that his improved boxing is represented. Sherk also talked about his new doll action figure. "The Muscle Shark" didn't take kindly to us calling it a doll. He was heavily involved in the final product. That includes making sure that his loyal sponsors were represented on the figure.

Sherk told Cagewriter and the rest of the collected media at UFC 98 workout day that he's got a lot of respect for Edgar's wrestling. It sounded like he's ready for a standup fight thinking that the two fighters may nullify each other when it comes to wrestling.

Join TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah on Cagewriter for a live chat on Friday at 1 p.m. ET. Maggie Hendricks will chat throughout UFC 98's main card on Saturday night. Cofield will have live fight-by-fight updates. And following the card, the only postfight show from the MGM after UFC 98 is right here on Cagewriter starting at 1:30 a.m. ET. You can listen here.

maybe nobody ranks him because everyone knows he's on his way out as well.
tyson griffin nearly beat him and would've fared much better on the cards had he not been fighting a name such as sherk. and even though he posted a "shutout" over florian in their fight, i think it's safe to say florian would tko his a$$ now. and who wants to see shrek hold someone down again anyway? anyone remember sherk/franca? oh my god, terrible. sherk's standup is decent for a wrestler, the only problem is he can never get in close enough on anyone except for griffin most recently....that being the only reason tyson didn't win, he felt sherk's power. Edgar on the other hand, is a little more polished and probably has what it takes to win a decision over sherk.

sherk's time has come and passed already. his "improved boxing" is still unimpressive... Kflo is a better fighter today than he was at ufc 64, while sherk just added minuscule additions to his striking.
i also hope aoki comes to the ufc so he can aoki-plata sherk :)

I fail to understand people's negativity, especially towards fighters who tend to show a lot of respect to people outside of hyping a fight. Can we not just appreciate the level of skill they have achieved? Whether you enjoy watching their fighting style or not, can't you appreciate the time and effort it takes to get to the skill level they are at? If two men can train for months and beat the hell out of each other and show some respect afterwards, why can't fans of the sport show some respect for the people fighting.

Well he did get stripped of his title. Usually that means you have to work your way back up the rankings. Do I think Sherk is better than Florian and Aoki? Yes, but then, they didn't fail a drug test.

There's no way KenFlo should be ranked above Sherk. That's ridiculous. Sherk is still a bona fide top 10 lightweight.

awww charlie brown, can't we all just get along? gimme a break, lame dude. no negativity here, just calling it like i see it. i have plenty of respect for anyone who gets in there and throws down, and i do appreciate their level of skill. but what does that have to do with sherk complaining about fighters who are better than him being ranked higher? he just needs to shut up and focus on edgar, he's lucky tyson griffin's name wasn't big enough to sway the cecil peoples' of the world and if he starts worrying about media rankings then he's only got one place to go......the WEC.

fact is, since he got his title by beating a baby kenflo.....he won a boring decision over franca in which he was repeatedly kneed to the head prior to 4 and a half minutes of lay and pray, was then stripped of that title and since he's been "back" he got tko'd by penn.....then barely won a decision over tyson griffin. and honestly, if you look at his resume since his first fight it's full of plenty of wins but over questionable quality fighters for the most part. 2 wins over karo, one over radach due to a cut, and one over nick diaz. and what else? every time he stepped up to the matt hughes's, gsp's and bj penn's of the world he got stomped.
so no sean, nobody thinks you deserve to be ranked up there with those guys because you haven't beat any of them. so you think you can come to the LW division, beat baby kenflo, franca and griffin....now all of a sudden you're upset with your #4 LW ranking? WTF? took bj longer than it took kenflo to beat stevenson.....wonder how long it would take you, or would you even win at all?

I have had Sherk ranked top 2 in lightweight for quite some time. I liked watching him grind out the victory over Franca. He is one of my favorite characters to play as on the UFC2009 UNDISPUTED game aswell. Sherk would work over everyone who participated in the DREAM LIGHTWEIGHT Tournament. And yes, im saying that taking into consideration the rules over here, and the rules over there, either way. IF Sherk would not have stood BJ Penn, he would have taken the W. I sent him a myspace message telling him to wear on BJ. BJ is not an athlete, and has poor work ethic. ANYWAY..... Look forward to Sherk taking out Edgar and moving closer to a title shot.
