Shamrock and wife both in hospital

SAN JOSE -- Both Frank Shamrock and wife Amy ended up in San Jose's Valley Medical Center on Saturday night.

Frank Shamrock went to the hospital for the treatment of injuries suffered during his Strikeforce middleweight title loss to Cung Le, including what is believed to be a broken right forearm.

Amy Shamrock, who is pregnant with the couple's first child, went into labor during the match and was rushed to the facility as well.

Frank Shamrock also has a 19-year old son from a previous marriage.

Update, 10 p.m. Pacific: As it turns out, Mrs. Shamrock, who isn't due until May, thought she went into labor but actually didn't. She was released from the hospital after the false alarm.

Update, 1 a.m. Pacific: Frank Shamrock's right forearm was broken in two; he'll undergo surgery and have a plate inserted in his arm Sunday.

Monday update: Shamrock underwent a five-hour operation Sunday to put in a plate and six screws for a complete break of the ulna bone in his right forearm.  Shamrock believes the break took place during the second round of the fight, but a kick in the third round worsened it and the arm was at that point useless, so he couldn't continue the fight.

I am Cung's fan. It's not easy to take Cung down for ground war. Look like whoever fought Cung had to fight Cung's way. It's stand up style, and he won every time.

Goodluck with the baby. This was the best Elite XC/Strikeforce card I have seen. I thought Shamrock would win going into the fight because I didn't know much about Li. I have to say that both men looked great in there and I would like to see it again. Li however was so good, that he should be fighting for the UFC. Good luck with the broken arm Frank, hope to see you back soon.

Great fight between 2 great MMA legends. Cung Le seems to be the real future of MMA. He has the complete package. Not too many can deliver kicks like Le. It's about time a true martial artist got in the ring or cage. Too many brawlers, wrestlers, street fighters, and punch-only fighters these days. UFC should sponsor a Cung Le vs anyone fight. Pound per pound Cung Le is unbeatable and he portays a real martial artist. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li should be proud!

well this is funny people say cung le is unbeatable, well they fought at 185, i seem to beleive the ufc champ at 185 (and number one ranked fighter in the world) is anderson silva, now frank has power but not anything like anderson posseses. nothing against le but if frank rocked le silva would ko him, for god sakes he rocked henderson who has a stone chin and eats punches for fun

Franks pride made this a great fight. Franks doesnt want to be seen as just a groundfighter, but the truth is "You fight to win, not to prove points." Dont get me wrong im not taking anything way from chung, he did what he was suppposed to do. But what if Chung said he would beat Frank at his game and tried to only do ground? Frank didnt respect Chungs skills and paid for it, maybe out of disrespect or bordem with MMA, but he put his all in it and lost. Now he has to live with that.

i worked with cung le on a film named "fighting", and while on set with him (back in november) he told me he wanted this fight with frank. at first, i thought he was crazy. but after seeing what he could do with his body, i believed he was the real deal. he proved that to the rest of the world tonite. he is also a personable down to earth guy. articulate and endearing. a marketing gold mine. i plan to see alot of cung le in the the future. he is capable of becoming an iconic ambassador to the sport. best of luck to him. get better frank. you are a great fighter and have nothing to be ashamed of. congrats on your newborn.

what a fight...that 3rd round was quite possibly the best round in mma i've ever seen...would love to see cung and silva...that would be a war...silva would be a huge favorite but i doubt he's seen leg kicks like cung's before. nice to see a non-ufc event deliver...the ufc hype machine is beginning to wear on me.

Lets be honest. Le is a great fighter, but the reason he won was a bad game plan. I would like to see someone fight him the way he should be fought. You dont try to wrestle a wrestler and you dont try and strike with a striker. I think the fight was bad because we didn't see if he could handle the ground. I know he can stand and fight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Y'all's don't really know that Cung Le does in fact have a legitimate ground game. It seems to be down played. He had a very successful high school and college wrestling background. I've also heard (but not confirmed) that he did judo when he was younger.

bad decision on shamrock to fight his opponent's style. i did not like the fight too much. looked more like a WWE event. u honestly think le would fare well against complete MMA fighters. having respect for your opponent is one thing but to deliberately engage the match in a way that favors the style of your opponent is dumb--- unless of course u stage it that way to bring hype to a fledgling promotional organization. just my two cents

Frank tried to show off one too many times. Now I totally respect his record. He is a legend. But I gotta admit, it felt great to see the smile wiped of his face at the beginning of the 3rd. Cung Le fought a brilliant fight. He has a ways to go to be considered for superstar status in my book, but give him credit where it is due. He got hit, he got hurt, he got shook. Not many could have taken what he did and still win ever round. I declare myself a Cung Le fan and I'm looking forward to see him grow in MMA. Frank, good luck with the child, the recovery and the rematch.

Shooting for Cung Le is a big mistake in my opinion. Asians especially Vietnamese carry most of their power in their legs and are very well grounded. This also translates into hip action for increased punching power.
Shooting leaves you open. You just hope to take them down and not get whammed in the face. It take precise distancing ability to do it well. It's even harder against a master kicker like Cung Le who also has mastery of distancing. He just needs to be a little creative to evade and crush the shoot. A kick to the ear would leave a person disoriented for a while.
Clinching may work, but then again, if they're willing to risk strikes from Cung Le, power to them. But Cung Le has excellent throw defense. He's undefeated in San Shou (and everything for that matter), which allows throws and takedowns.
Shamrock was absolutely right for withdrawing. He spent all his energy in his last rally against Cung Le and he dearly paid for it. If he continued, that arm would have continued to fragment and he would have sustained severe trauma if he continued to block with it. If he doesn't block then he has the risk of serious head and neck injury due to repetitive blows, and it's the blood clots to the brain which can kill a person. The kicks to the midsection dug in deep, and he also could have suffered internal injuries. I predict that there will be no rematch. It will take a long time to heal that arm and condition it again for fighting.
This is the power of a close to pure martial art. When you reach a certain level in a particular art, those weaknesses that force most fighters to adopt BJJ or other styles eventually get reduced and they'll be able to use the pure style with more versatility. But a lot of young kids out there want to make it in the MMA world quickly and they don't have 10+ years to master an art. I think Cung Le is holding back the power though. If he did adopt any of the Vietnamese styles, he would know how to easily break and crush bone with his attacks. But, he would no longer be a sportsman if he raised it to that level.

So many people seem to criticize Cung for having no ground game, and Frank for not exploiting that. What these people don't realize is that Cung has a strong wrestling background and an excellent takedown defense. If you try to take him down, he'll sprawl, reverse the attempt and make you look like a fool, then stand right back up. Cung seems to force the stand up game with his great takedown defense, then picks his opponent apart with nasty striking. Frank got torn up!

Cung Le was awesome and could here the cracking whip of his kicks. my take on Frank is even if he tried to take Le down, he couldn't which showed. Like someone said before, Le is good with takedowns and Frank can't penetrate him. Although I do give Frank credit about advancing forward when Cung attempted his spinning crescent kicks.
I think it be best that Frank just stay away from Cung cuz he'll never get him to the ground and will lose again on stand up.

I was there...and it was a rip-off. Insert one Sham-rock. Include guy that supposedly is the next middleweight champion. Mention that there both from the city in which there fighting in. What do you get? A over hyped staged fight in a crowd of beer guzzling gorrilas. The only future that Cung has in the UFC is being someone's doormat. Oh and Kimbo Silce? WTF!! He was fighting bare knuckle fighs in backyard's in god's knows where. Sham-rock....I heard the WWE is interested.

I agree with comments from "observation". This was an odd fight. Why would a seasoned MMA guy like Shamrock not take Le to the ground? He could have and didn't. Shamrock held back and didn't try to take Le to mat, even after he was failing with strikes. This fight was staged for a big payoff rematch. This fight was a sham!

I'm also a Cung fan. I respect Frank and his fighting skill. Anyone who watched the fight last night will have to agree it was not Frank's night and Cung did beat him even if his hand was not broken in the 3rd round. Frank seemed to run out of options to fight Cung, so he just went back to where he was at his best, using his combo of punches which rocked Cung a few times.
