Shamrock-Le set for March 29

Strikeforce and Elite XC will present their second joint show, headlined by Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le in a five-round fight for the Strikeforce middleweight title, on March 29 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

A news conference involving both promotions to officially announce the fight is expected to take place some time next week. The event will air live on Showtime and include two matches from Strikeforce, two from Elite XC, and one match pitting a Strikeforce fighter against an Elite XC fighter.

No other matches are finalized for the show, but it is expected Gilbert Melendez will defend the Strikeforce lightweight title and that Jake Shields will also be fighting on the show.

Shamrock and Le have been the two biggest drawing cards for Strikeforce, which has drawn the largest MMA crowds in North America besides UFC. A joint venture between the two promotions June 22 on Showtime, featuring Shamrock beating Phil Baroni and Le beating Tony Fryklund, drew the highest rating (1.72), for a non-UFC MMA show in North America.

Le, 5-0, is a San Shou specialist who switched to MMA in 2005.

He's a major local draw and hasn't lost in San Jose on a major show in any form of combat. Shamrock, 25-8-2, a pioneer in the sport, would be, by far, his toughest career test.

Shamrock, the first UFC middleweight (now light heavyweight) champion as well as an early Pancrase champion, is coming off a win over Phil Baroni -- his most impressive win since his 1999 win over Tito Ortiz.

However, he fought sparingly from 2000-2004, returning as a regular fighter when the sport exploded in popularity. His second-round choke out submission of Baroni made him the first Strikeforce middleweight champion.

The fight is intriguing because the one facet of the game Shamrock would have a decided edge is on the ground.  However, Le has never been taken down in an MMA fight and has strong wrestling to go with his flashy stand-up. Le hasn't faced as accomplished a stand-up fighter as Shamrock since going into MMA.

Is that the only reason why you want him to win, because he's Vietnamese? LMFAO!
Shamrock's gonna pound Le like he's never been pounded before. Le better hope he doesn't get taken to the ground where Shamrock will bleed him for sure.

There comes a time when the mind needs to listen to the body. Youth is the most impressive factor when it comes to this fight. I know little of the local kid Le, but the fact that he is younger than OLD MAN SHAM means he will win. "Represent" is right LE. Strength and Honor!

Le is good but I agree with a few other posts that Shamrock is on another level. Le has had some impressive fights but I don't think he ever faced someone near Frank Shamrock level. Its a fight and "anything can happen" but I'll pick Frank Shamrock.

though I always root for Frank. I dont think He will win this one Cung Le by decision unless Frank is able to get him down, which is a hard thing to do. Another strategic possibility is Cung will train in submission and move his focus to defense of that in which if he does that he will be taken down and he will be submitted.

Shamrock is at a whole different level than Le has ever seen. It should be a good one.

Frank is going to sumbit Cung in the second or third round. Even though Le has a strong wrestling background, he hasn't fought anyone near Shamrock level stand-up or submission-wise. Don't get me wrong, I'm from the Bay and support both fighters but Le is not match to Shamrock. Le has to surprise Shamrock with a scissor-leg submission like Ryo Chonan did against Anderson Silva to win the match. Can't wait for the fight.

I expect an exciting fight as long as Frank lets it stay standing. I know Lee has some wrestling experience, but I don't think he's ever faced grappling prowess like Shamrock is gonna bring to the ring- god, It will be nice to see another good mma fight in the US, between two excellent strikers, take place in a ring.
I see frank by armbar or guillotine early (because he won't want to mess with Lee standing) in the first round.
