At every MMA event, from unregulated backyard brawls to marquee UFC events, fighters walk into a song of their choosing. (Unless Dana White vetoes it.) Some of the songs will knock you down, some are expected, some are just plain weird. My personal favorite is "El Matador," by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, used a few times by Roger Huerta.
Entrance songs for fighters are a bit tougher to choose than, say, batting music in baseball. The whole song has to be good, and has to get the arena excited for your mere presence. It can't be just a few bars of a decent song. If you had to make that long walk to the cage, what would you choose? We asked that question of MMA writers, and you might be surprised by some of their picks.
Dave Meltzer, Yahoo! Sports: Ring of Fire, Johnny Cash
Ariel Helwani, Versus.com and MMA Fanhouse: "I would pick Biggie's "Victory." I used to listen to it before every one of my high school basketball games and it really got my blood going. If someone else on the card already picked that, I would definitely go with Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up." Love that track."
Zak Woods, Watch Kalib Run: "I was surprised how much I struggled with the choice of entrance music. I tackled anywhere from movie soundtracks like Last of the Mohicans to rap songs about performing hysterectomies on his enemies, to bagpipe music by Dropkick Murphy's. In the end I had to go with an oldie but a goodie, "Flight of the Valkyries" from Apocalypse Now. After all, who doesn't love the smell of napalm in the morning?"
Ben Fowlkes, Cage Potato and Sports Illustrated: "I don't even have to think about it. Gwen Stefani, "Hollaback Girl."
Michael David Smith, MMA Fanhouse: "I've always thought "I Am a Real American," the song popularized by Hulk Hogan in the 1980s, is the absolutely perfect entrance music. If I were a fighter, that would be my choice."
Dann Stupp, MMA Junkie: "The Rollins Band's "What am I Doing Here" seems most fitting. And living in Cincinnati with the Bengals, I should probably consider the local classic "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses. Give me Dropkick Murphy's "State of Massachusetts," though. How can it not pump you up?"
For me, I've always gone with "B.O.B" by Outkast or "Da Rockwilder" by Method Man and Redman. However, the Killers' "All These Things That I've Done" has moved to the top of the list, because the awesome "I've got soul, but I'm not a solder" lyrics would crescendo just as my trainer is slapping me in the face and sending me into the cage.
What about you? Tell us your dream entrance song in the comments.
