There's no panic coming from the UFC camp on the mess that is unfolding in Montreal with regards to the promotion legally holding a fight card there in nine weeks. But that isn't the vibe coming those in the know to the north.

The Quebec commission that oversees combat sports discovered sometime in the past two weeks that the unified rules of mixed martial arts is supposedly in direct violation of Quebec law. Amazingly, last year's record-breaking UFC 83 and dozens of MMA events have been held around the province for years, but they were all in violation of the commission's rules in place. Does this mean that UFC 97 is a no-go for Montreal on Apr. 18? The UFC has already sold 13,000 tickets in pre-sales and the remaining 8,000-plus are expected to sellout tomorrow morning in a matter of minutes.

You'd figure it would be freakout time in Las Vegas at the UFC's headquarters but that's not the case. UFC president Dana White confidently declared today that the event will happen in Montreal:

"We'll definitely, definitely be in Montreal, no doubt about it,"
White told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole. "This fight sold out faster than the last one."

Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press has been tracking the story and he doesn't sound quite so optimistic:

"At the beginning of the day I thought that this was something they could fix," Davidson told Cage Writer. "But I have to say there's a chance (UFC 97) could not happen. If the government is digging its heels in, there are some pretty major differences between these rules. Right now it's a total mess and an embarrassment."

Some of the rules revelations include:

- Hitting with a bent knee or elbow is deemed a foul

- Once a fighter is knocked down, the opponent must go to a neutral corner

- No judo throws (fighter can't be dumped on his head)

- Limits on the cage size (UFC's Octagon is beyond the allowable size)

Davidson said it comes down to a liability issue:

"If somebody was thrown on his head, which by the way is illegal under Quebec rules, and they were injured they could sue the province."

Click to hear Davidson talk about UFC 97 possibly being banished from Canada (ESPNRadio1100 w/Cofield & Cokin):

In talking to the communications director, Réjean Thériault, from the Quebec commission that oversees combat sports, racing, gaming and alcohol, Davidson said the message was clear - the rules followed by the UFC are illegal and the law is the law in Quebec. In response to the notion that a session could be called to change the rules, Thériault indicated that the rules can't be changed for at least year.

If the UFC needs to use Las Vegas as a backup to move UFC 97, the Mandalay Bay Events Center is already booked on Apr. 18 while the bigger MGM Grand Garden Arena does appear to be available.

That would be so jacked up if they had to move the show on short notice. You'd think the UFC would check the rules of the venues they are fighting in.

You would think those surrender monkeys would know the laws of the their own town or state or province or locality or whatever it's called, prior to taking the money of who knows how many promoters over the past few years. This is not the first mma card held in Quebec, but if they are to be no more, let's just rub some Vaseline on our backs and shoulders and slip away without getting touched.

You guys better be glad that McCain didn't win the election...or he wouldve done away with MMA all together...and we'd have to settle for those gay rules in Canada...no knees, no judo throws....that sounds more like a debate to me....

Haven't wrasslers been getting tossed on their heads & asses in Quebec for over 75 years? Or does that not count because they know going in that they are going to be tossed on their heads & asses?
I'll say it again: DAMN FRENCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FearNoEvil = Steve Cofield?
The level of anti-Quebec sentiment is outrageous here.
In other news, this will be changed. MMA is huge in Quebec, St-Pierre has been elevated to National Hero status since UFC 83 and the sport is getting bigger in Canada.
It's at the point where there will be more people in the bars on Saturday to watch the fights than to watch Hockey Night in Canada. Although the way hockey is played up here, nobody can really tell the difference.

Lets see there national sport allows people to hit each other with there bare fists and that's OK but this trivial stuff is not allowed. What ever at least GSP got to get his belt back there.

Hey I'm just sayin, UFC isn't holding fights in NY, why? Because it's illegal there. If it's illegal in Quebec then you'd think they'd have known about it. On the other hand the frenchies have been holding MMA fights there for years and they're just now figuring out that the fights are illegal? I think some freakin politician is looking to get his back greased.

hopefully they can twist a few arms at the last minute and move it to Toronto. everyone's complaining how city revenues are in the tank here, UFC 97 would certainly help!

ok ok, first of all don't knock on Canada people. Knock on Quebec because those separatists seem to run their own ship and so do most of the provinces up here with their anti-MMA...or any fun or entertainment for that matter. Quebec and Alberta are the only provinces, that I know of, that actually allow MMA. But apparently those Frenchies are a bit soft albeit still crazy and such. This'll probably pass since it got by last time. But if it doesn't...White needs to bring it to Alberta or hope BC gets wise and opens up for it after the Olympics pass through.

Who cares? Just throw Quebec in the same category with New York and move on to another province. The best thing to come out of Canada is FIGHCHICA and that is a pretty damn high bar to beat.

Wait, what's the problem, here? The UFC already has more rules than are necessary to prove who would be the best fighter in a complete free-fight, and now people complain about more rules? Get with the programme: The UFC adopted its current rule-set in the first place to appease state regulating commissions and (believe it or not, geniuses!) not all local commissions are the same. If the fighters themselves want to prove how truly good they are, they would have no problem with the rules which Quebec is asking to be implemented; adapt and act upon this like a versatile fighter does, else be rightfully labeled one-dimensional.
