After being knocked out in his last fight, the explosive Wanderlei Silva was a little more calculated in today's battle against Rich Franklin at UFC 99. Maybe too much so, it appeared that the "Axe Murderer" landed the heavier shots throughout the fight but he also allowed Franklin to score too often with body kicks, jabs and straight lefts. Franklin took a unanimous decision in Cologne, Germany. Oddly for the third time on the night, UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer chose not to announce the scores. Cagewriter had the fight 29-28 for Silva.

The fight was waged at a catchweight of 195 pounds. Silva has spent his entire career at light heavyweight while Franklin has toggled between 205 and 185. Silva did appear tired from the middle of the second round on. He swung wildly and missed a lot, but when he did land in the second round, he had Franklin in trouble with 1:10 left. He smashed Franklin with two rights against the cage:

"You know when you get hit and see black for a second? I came to quickly. Not like the times in the past when I couldn't remember where I was for a few minutes," chuckled Franklin.

Franklin, a veteran of 29 MMA fights, collected himself and Silva looked exhausted as he prepped for the final round. In Round 3, the blueprint was the same. Franklin landed more shots from the outside but he did get blasted on several occasions. With less than a minute left, Silva threw caution to the wind and had Franklin injured against the cage. Franklin was wise, he clinched and got the fight to the ground with 38 seconds left. It may have sealed the victory.

Silva (32-10-1) has now lost five of six fights but all against high level competition. His plan is to move down to 185 pounds to set up a matchup against UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva. UFC color voice Joe Rogan reported that the cut to 195 was difficult, saying he heard that Silva, 32, had to drop 12 pounds on Friday before the weigh-in. With this loss, he'll need at least two dominant wins at middleweight to earn a shot at one of the top five pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

Franklin (25-4) bounced back nicely from a tight decision loss at UFC 93 against Dan Henderson. He has too many options to name at 205 pounds for his next opponent.

Man this was too close to call. Wanderlei obviously didn't handle his first weight cut well. I didn't see Franklin hurting him, it was more that Wanderlei was exhausted. That being said, if the Ax Murderer can handle his future weight cuts, I see him making a run at middleweight.

I had Silva winning the fight 29-28 also. Wandy can't catch a break. Hope the UFC makes the Anderson/Wandy fight anyway...

Wanderlei got ripped off! The crowd reaction tells you who they thought won. Franklin won the decision but Silva won the hearts of the German crowd. Silva, to me, was, is and always will be a true MMA icon.

This fight does not matter. Silva will not beat Anderson, so who cares. And he might not make weight. Ace, as much as I like the fellow, is not a top contender, no matter how much everyone in the UFC might want to pretend. So, who cares who won. Nothing rides on this contest. It should have been free.

Good for both fighters but UFC needs to start a seniors division. Anybody above the age of 32 should fight in that division. Both fighters were gassed in the second round. Basically 32 years old is 224 in dog years….

I'm glad that I see many of you scored it like I did, 29-28 Silva. The weight reduction really took a lot of energy out of Wand, but he still out-scored Franklin. They commented that Wand had to drop 12 pounds in a hurry to make his weight. Anyone who has ever had to do that knows what it can do to you !! Especially when you're talking about someone who is already in prime condition. Anyway, Wanderlei got robbed on that one.
Wanderlei remains one of the Heroes / Legends of MMA !!

Not a strong enough fight card to be PPV. Should have been free on spike

I do agree with Fred. The card needed to be quite a bit stronger to be charging that kind of money on PPV. For this kind of money, (every 15 days or so...) they could be paying the fighters a hell of a lot more !!!

steve "you should hack your own head off" wandy is not a chump. name a dull fight that silvas' been in? you can't!!!! he always brings out a great draw of fans and always gives a good show, whatever the case. the fact of the matter is he had to cut a lot of weight for a guy that walks around at least 210lbs. another fight you called.....that's great, let me get you a cookie and some milk. UFC is playing favorites. saaaaaaadly its begining to look more like regular boxing everyday. Silva should have won. period..........

    Steve,
I'm disappointed in your comments about Franklin and Wand. I'm not a big Franklin fan, but I respect him as a fighter. I think Wand has earned respect over his career. I certainly wouldn't call him "a chump". Show a little respect for the guy, would ya? I've never met him personally, but he seems like the "genuine article" and a nice enough guy, if you ask me. Just my 2 cents....
