A Bakersfield, Calif. boy saved a friend and her dog after a pitbull tried to attack them. Did he do it by calmly coaxing the dog with a sweet voice, and then singing to it? Nope. He did it using a choke he learned in a jiu-jitsu class, which he held for 20 minutes until the police showed up.

Isn't it better that he was in this class instead of sitting on a couch, playing video games and eating Twinkies? The next time I hear MMA described with the words "human cockfighting," I will find this wonderful young man, who talks about the ordeal here, and have him choke out the idiot who said it.

Couldn't have been a very good choke, the pitbull survived. Unless its also a mircale of modern science being able to survive without oxygen to the brain for 20 minutes.
Quite risky - the kid's lucky he didn't get mauled himself.

I just like how Maggie wrote the pitbull was in the choke for 20 minutes, and in the article it links to the dog survives and is still alive. A real choke and the dog is dead in a couple of minutes.
Seriously, the dog could easily have spun round and bit the kid's face off.
I wouldn't start putting "effective pit bull defense" on any BJJ school advertising flyers just yet.

Kid's lucky he wasn't overpowered by the dog. Too bad the dog's owners aren't stand up enough to come and claim it. I own a pitbull. I am a responsible owner and although she is very game I have never baited her so she is a pet first and well socialized. I am very glad to read the little girl is relatively unscathed by this attack too. Obviously the boy although having the dog in a choke hold saved the day; the hold wasn't sunk in to where it could actually hurt the dog, I really think thqat would take a very strong mans arms and then some depending pon the size of the dog itself. I am very saddened that he dog willhave to be euthanized because of someones carelessness and thoughtlessness of their own animal. That sucks.

You mr MMA Armchair would have most likely pooped your pants.

you guys are so stupid of course the do survived the point of the article is the kid protected himself and his friend by using a rear naked choke , it doesnt mean he killed the dog or that the dog was without oxygem for twenty minutes lol it means he controlled it and waited for help . god you people on here are so quick to write dumb things just to try and make a point when you look stupid in doing so instead why not write that your happy the kid wasnt hurt and the hopefully he wont have to go through something like that again !

This kid is my new hero , but the irresponsible owner of the pit isn't. I have a pit and he is one the coolest and friendliest pets ive ever had. I'm glad that the children weren't hurt but i'm saddened to find out this story will portray the pitbull as the bad guy.

athsquare, McCain made the comment about MMA when it was not being regulated. At the time MMA was nothing more than human cockfighting, if you knew anything at all about the sport. It has slowly evolved over time for the better.

I think KJ-MMa Armchair is into another type of "naked choke." It involves a rope and porno.

Congrats to the kid for winning the bout but Mazzagatti shouldnt have let the pitbull stay in a choke for 20 minutes--they should have had to stand em up or work for an end

Thats great, I oughta buy that kid a beer and get him to whip my buddies ass in a bar somewhere. just kidding, i dont condone having children beating up adults unless its just a real dumb person. That dog probably isnt built exactly like a person is in the neck and probably would need a different pressure point to choke him out because its not the air to the brain that make us loose consciouseness from a rear naked choke, its the loss of blood flow from the two main arteries in the neck that we squeeze and cut off when we do ti to eachother, but good try mr armchair mma guy. and its also not death it causes by the way. have fun pretending to know what youre talking about though and stop trying to take some lil kids bit of time in the spotlight away... he earned it.

If any of you actually know something about pit bulls, you would know that most of them are human friendly and very family oriented dogs. However, the big problem with them (and as the story shows) is that they are aggressive towards other dogs. I have a pit myself, and the only dog she gets along with is our other dog. She goes nuts trying to get after any other dog she sees. It's all in how they are socialized as puppies and hard to change it when they get older. Bottom line is, the dog didn't turn and attack the kid because it simply had no interest in doing it. It was after the other dog and the other dog only. Too bad too many people don't realize this and continue to paint the breed into a bad picture.
