Nogueira claims interim title

LAS VEGAS -- Who said the UFC had a weak heavyweight division? Less than an hour after Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir electrified the crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made mixed martial arts history. The Brazilian legend became the first person to ever hold the PRIDE and UFC heavyweight championships when he submitted Tim Sylvia with a guillotine choke at 1:28 of the third round in a gripping battle for the interim crown.

Nogueira (31-4-1), who at 6-foot-3 and 237 pounds gave up five inches and 24 pounds to his foe, got pounded for much of the first two rounds. Sylvia is known as a patient fighter, but he took the standup game to Nogueira from the outset, dropping his opponent several times in the first round and opening a cut under his left eye.

With a sold-out audience that included Jay-Z, Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Undertaker watching, Sylvia continued the onslaught in the second round, opening the cut deeper, as Nogueira tried and mostly failed to take Sylvia down.

The end came abruptly in the third, as Nogueira, on the bottom in a ground exchange, reversed position. Soon thereafter, he got an opening for the choke and sunk it in, forcing his opponent to tap.

“He’s a true heavyweight, he’s a giant, a tough guy to fight against, said Nogueira. “When we went to the ground I tried to get an armbar, but instead I got a very nice guillotine.”

Nogueira also asked for a match with Randy Couture, technically still UFC champion, who walked out on his contract last year with two fights remaining.

Sylvia (24-4) was looking to become the second three-time UFC champ in UFC history, along with Couture.  “Every fight, he gets his a— kicked for the first 10 minutes,” said Sylvia. “He comes out fighting, next thing you know he wins. The guy’s a legend in this sport.”

Thank god...Sylvia is such a clown. Sets up Nog and Mir cause Randy's never coming back as much as Nog wishes he would.

Sylvia is a good fighter, but I think the last thing the ufc wants is for him to be champ again. Good to see Nog with a strap around his waist, he deserves it

pride in da house! as soon as the pride guys get used to the octogon, it's on. anyway, since the ufc and pride merged, the depth of the fight pool is unbelievable. tonights fight card was outstanding and worth every penny.

This is just another example of just how staged UFC has become.. Lesnar was clearly going to win this fight and a controversial stoppage for a bogus back of the head call.. 99.9% a one punch to back of the head will get a warning, not a stoppage and a 1 point deduction.. This saved Mir, there is no doubting this.. Imagine a WWE wrestler coming in and beating one of the best heavyweights in UFC history.. Before the fight, that piece of garbage ref emphasized "keeping it clean" for some reason as well.. Yes Lesnar got caught, but it shouldnt have gotten that far.. Lesnar won this fight, and will be the Champ within the year.

Dana White being from Hermon-Levant, Maine and Tim Silvia being from Ellsworth, Maine...Think there's past history anywhere between those 2? And Marcus Davis being from Bangor, Maine. All 3 being 50 miles apart, hmmm....I'm from Dexter, not far from any of them....

thank god that three toe'd sloth lost. Its amazing how well tim has done in the ufc, i mean all's he does is box, and hes not even on the same level as a boxer for striking. tim sylvia vs david tua in a boxing match that would be funny!. now we have three x pride fighters as champs 1.anderson silva, q. jackson and Nogueira, yes it feels good, pride was so much more fun 2 watch.

geefto, you get caught in a sub, you tap, you f'n lose!.. lesnar didn't win, he tapped!!!.. don't care if you dominate a fight at first, the important thing is you win in the end.. maybe lesnar will get better in the future, but he needs to work on bjj defense more..

I do believe some previous UFC fights (e.g. Wanderlei vs Chuck) looked very suspicious, but I don't think this fight was rigged. But it was a horrible call by the Mario bro. ref to deduct a point and stand them up after only one blow to the head (into which Mir turned his head). I think that shook Lesnar a bit and he showed his inexperience leaving his ankle out like that. He'll be back though.
The Sylvia fight was moronic on his part. He had Mino down and out a few times and instead of finshing he got back up to try and end it standing. No way could Nog have submitted him when he was almost unconscious. Horrible strategy by Sylvia.

Randy should have to win against Nog first before considering himself worthy to fight Fedor. Both of Nog's losses to Fedor were by decision. Nog Randy

In the end both 'winners' looked pretty bad. Both Mir and Nog got dominated for 90% of the fight. I know that's part of the MMA mystique, but still the victors didn't seemed deserved of having their hand held up.

If Tim Silvia's arms were 1 or 2 inches shorter nobody would even know his name because that is the ONLY thing he has going for him. You've seen what happens when a true MMA gets inside his sloppy punches.......he gets exposed for the fraud he really is. Anybody who wears their championship belt to go eat at Chili's deserves to be hit in the face with a ball-ping hammer,

i think both mir and nog looked good because they showed heart and pulled off a win despite getting a beating.. it was vintge big nog performance, if you had watched any of his fights before, that's how most of his fights go down.. he gets dominated then shows his heart to pull off a win.. that for me is a true champion.. c'mon randy, fulfill your contract first and fight nog for the title, then if you win, go and pursue fedor..
