Nick Diaz controlled the entire fight, with his grip on Scott Smith growing stronger as the fight wore on. He finished Smith off with a rear naked choke at 1:41 in the third round.

Diaz, who had the St. Louis crowd on his side, dominated a stand-up battle with Smith. His weapon of choice were body shots, and every one seemed devastating to Smith. His kicks were also textbook, though he didn't use them as often.

Quite often a fighter who rubs people the wrong way with his abrasive comments and penchant to flip the middle finger with little provocation, Diaz admitted that the things he says are often just a show after the fight. He enjoyed being a fan favorite on this evening, standing outside the cage and enjoying the cheers that deservedly came his away after such an impressive win.

The Diaz brother are both great fighters. Who cares if they act like punks sometimes. That's who they are and it makes for a more interesting fight. I fugured Diaz would submit Smith. He Jui-Jitsu is amazing, one transition to another. Good job Nick, hope to see up back in the UFC soon! He would GSP a run for his money!

I think Smith's problem is his body. Every fight I see him he gets hit to the body and cause him to buckle. Scott please train your body for a change.....

Class doesn't matter....I mean they are fighters for god sake.......
Leave the emotions at the door and tear someone up!!!!!
Diaz brothers and Shields jiu jitsu is out of this world, and Nicks boxing is superb. You notice how many times he hit him, and they were closed fights, not slaps. Why tire yourself throwing bombs constantly when you can relentlessly beat someones face and body until they can take no more.
In the words of Nick Diaz:
"When a Ninja is sittin up in a tree, lookin to kill some s*&^, he doesn't have his girlfriend sitting there with him".
I think that sums it up, no fear, no love, and complete domination. Nick Diaz.

Diaz keeps taking these catchweight fights just to look like he's busy. He's fighting guys that look like they'll be competitive when really Diaz has no business losing to any of them. Nick doesn't want to stay at welterweight since that would mean a title fight with his good buddy Jake Shields...so what do you do with a guy like that?

Nick Diaz is fairly impressive, but I don't really think he's ready for GSP, his ground game isn't up to GSPs. I also don't think his stand up would be enough to handle Cung Le, Cung comes at you from all directions, and Diaz doesn't have the punching power to keep him honest. Diaz is young though and if he keeps his head together he should only get better.

Diaz would smoke cung. As far as the ufc "decision defeats", anybody that watched those fights knows better. He flat out beat Karo, sanchez could have went either way and riggs? Come on. he beat his ass in the rig and then went and beat his ass in the hospital! Nick is here to stay and has definately earned his right to fight the best in the world.

not in his pocket just a fan his fight game and have been since the ufc.
Lets realize when he lost those fights he was still just 22.
But I do agree GSP would be a tough matchup....but i woiuld say he has the superiority on the ground, regardless of GSP's ground and pound.

I doubt that nick has the superiority on the ground that is strong enough. GSP hasn't been in danger of being submitted in a long time, even against really good submission artists. Nick is strong, but he likes to use his jujitsu after he softens people up, not after they clinch and lean on him and then take him down on their own time.

Does Diaz really want a shot at Anderson Silva at 184? Nick, you are a small 184 and are better off to drop to 170 and try GSP.

I think Diaz is kind of a bit*h, but he has some skills. I've warmed up to him a bit over the last year, but to think his "pepper" strategy will work on a supremely accurate, technical, and powerful striker like A. Silva is just simply ignorant. Silva mauls Diaz in under 2 rounds. GSP is also FAR TOO STRONG AND AGILE for Diaz. He also has easily 3X better boxing skills (head movement, etc.) than Smith. GSP will pound him out in 2 rounds. Diaz is good. Championship material in the UFC at 170 or 185? It's a bit of a stretch. Possible, but not probable.

Diaz is just ok. Hes a middle of the road fighter if hes fighting in the UFC. Im not sure his striking style would work against top level competition, but his bjj is good enough to beat some of the guys in the UFC. But I think GSP would crush him, and Im not even a GSP fan.

GSP would dominate Nick Diaz and I dont think it would go past the first round. Diaz is not even close to his league. Look what GSP did to Fitch, "Crybaby" Penn, Serra, Hughes, all top fighters on the ground....What could Diaz show GSP that he hasn't seen on the ground and dominated already??

Well Smith had no game plan. He stood right in front of Diaz in punching range. He was backing straight up, he didn't have his hands up and he had no head movement. He needed to be either all the way in and worked the clinch or he needed to be all the out....out of Diaz's punching range and worked angles and used lateral movement. With that said, Diaz is a good fighter and I would like to see him fight some better competition.

Smith is not a good fighter, he only wins by KO and every time is losing terribly when he does land his lucky punch. I wonder if he's ever been ahead on a scorecard in any fight that he's won.

Troy... did you really use class and Diaz in the same sentence??? ok~just razzing ya.
I give Diaz credit for beating up Smith who is a quality opponnent. I personally think it's ok for fighters to come off as less than a clean cut all-american... what ever.

still so many diaz haters. diaz has worked so hard since the ufc. gsp's only way to win would be an agile lay n pray. he would move around alot on top and not allow diaz to throw on the triangle. it'd be a frustrating and boring victory. i would have to pick diaz. with his superior warrior instincts he would find a way to beat gsp.
