It's Nick being Nick. The elder Diaz brother is one of the top 20 fighters in the world but the kid is a handful for any promoter. Diaz, who has boasted many times in the past that he's a marijuana smoker, no showed his mandatory test with the California State Athletic Commission on Friday. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told the gathered media during a conference call today that the deadline is 3 p.m. PT. With all the uncertainty, the backup plan is now Jesse Taylor, of Ultimate Fighter 7 fame, squaring off against Jay Hieron. This fight has become a disaster. Remember Hieron was a late replacement for Joe Riggs.

Coker is taking the Diaz drama in stride:

"We've been in the business for 25 years -- in the martial arts fight business," he said. "And you know, when I was in my early 20's, and something like this happened, I would freak out, and get upset. But over the years, you know, you learn that it's part of the game. And you don't even try to create logic behind it because sometimes there's no logic behind the thought-process of, you know, what has happened or a fighter's decision or a manager's decision or just the circumstances that unfold because of circumstances."

UPDATE: DIAZ OFFICIALLY OFF THE CARD ACCORDING TO CSAC:

According to MMAWeekly, Bill Douglas, Assistant Executive Officer of the CSAC, said there would be no Monday test:

“If Mr. Diaz is in fact in route to Los Angeles, then it is news to us because he has not notified us and considering that we are administering the test,” wrote Douglas, “I suggest that he or someone from his camp ‘let’s their fingers do the walking,’ ‘reaches out to touch someone,’ or any other colorful catch phrase that you can think of stemming from an old telephone commercial."

Hieron said on the conference call that he wasn't going to freak out, after having several fights canceled or delayed over the last 18 months:

"I think I've been through everything bad a fighter could be through in his career. So I just chalk it up and keep going forward. Really, I can't control that situation with them, so I try to put it out of my mind. You know, everything will turn out the way it's supposed to, and I can't really stress about the situation. The good thing about it is that I've been through all this stuff before, and it helps me get through this."

Coker said that he had spoken with Diaz's trainer Cesar Gracie. He also mention the promotion had booked a flight for Diaz to get down to Los Angeles from Stockton this afternoon. This is a huge blow to the card and another slap in the face of Hieron, who loses out on a chance at a victory over a major name.

Listen here for the entire call.

This a little off topic, but has anyone noticed the numerous amount of times Scott Coker uses the "you know" when he speaks? It's transcribed 3 times in that paragraph. I think Dana's F bombs may actually be preferable.
On topic, this is a bummer. Diaz is a knucklehead but usually produces pretty exciting fights.

While the Diaz Brothers personify the great city that is Stockton, California, I would think a Raider fan would be a little less judgmental JustWinBaby21. I hope Diaz shows, up - I'm going to the Strikeforce event.

i didn't even know heiron and diaz were going to fight......and that's a damn shame because it's about time we see heiron fight somebody good again. he's been tearing people up on short notice for a couple years now and i think he's improved greatly since his last couple losses. but that's the point....i think he has, i don't know, and i'd like to, guess i'll keep waiting.

ducky i'm pretty sure the diaz brothers are too gangster to even respond to someone with your name......and i disagree. i don't see how anyone can be bad for the sport really, it's all about regular people like you and i and how we associate the actions of one or two people with the morality of something huge....ridiculous if you ask me.

I love the Diaz brothers. But I kinda see why ppl utter the famous 'Scarface' line: "F##k the Diaz Brothers!"
C'mon it is your job to do simple things like show up for the p!ss test. sigh.

I really think those bankrupt criminals, the Fertittas, are pulling the strings of the CSAC. Diaz is a victim of youthful disorganization, but he is also a victim of the fertitta's savagery.

Just give Hieron the belt for having 2 fights in row canceled on him. I smoke pot but I never fail / miss drug tests because all you have to do is stop smoking for a week. It's the simplest thing in the world.

Better to not show up and miss 1 fight than to show up and fail, get suspended for a year.

Do you have to accuse Dana of paying everyone off? Like damn, you'd think Diaz is the most squared away fighter, Josh Barnett is the most most all natural fighter, and Forrest Griffin has never been knocked out the way you accuse Dana of having something to do with something doesn't go the way you think it's supposed to.

i like reading your stupid comment's NUT. There usually pretty funny (and this 1 ain't bad) but i always see where you hate on the Yahoo's about ONLY writing stories about UFC but yet when they write 1 NOT about the UFC you say they are distracting our gooo for brain attentions? Hmm i wish you would just go back to commenting about the ACTUAL blog rather than, i dunno, writing about the UFC? Just a thought.

Nutcracker, and what are your thoughts on the actual article?
It's quite possible that this is more newsworthy than writing yet another article on the poor UFC card, the lacklustre main event and Griffin's poor showing. Or, sorry, in your world, write another article shinning Dana's knob.
