Cagewriter - UFC

Remember how the UFC and Spike counted down the 100 best fights in UFC history? You can now buy the entire set on DVD or Blu-Ray.

If you're the kind of fight nerd who, like me, sometimes spends a lazy weekend afternoon watching old Pride videos, then this compilation is a must-have. It does a good job of showing all the best fights throughout the history of the UFC and has many of the fighters involved discussing their bouts. My one problem is that it doesn't feature any fighters not still under contract to the UFC, so Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Dan Severn, and even Tito Ortiz -- who wasn't signed at the time of the taping -- are not featured in interviews.

Still, if you're starting to think about holiday gifts for your favorite MMA fan, this isn't a bad place to start. Get it on DVD for $55.99, or on Blu-Ray for $119.97

What an epic waste of money! It would be my luck I would get that for a Christmas present, along with the box set Cold Play live edition I got last year.

I can see most of these fights on the internet. And when they don't even put Frank Shamrock-Tito Ortiz, whats the point of even releasing it.
    Not spending my money, obviously.

that countdown was a crock of sh!t. wasn't the first griffin/bonnar fight number one? because of it's "significance" i'm sure....LOL. and matt, i don't remember the entire countdown but didn't they exclude any fights that took place prior to zuffa taking over? i think i only caught the top 50 or so, but i don't remember anything vintage.

Steven W - They had some fights prior to the zuffa take over, but there weren't many. And yes, the 1st bonnar/griffin fight, that great display of skill and strategy lol (*rolls eyes*) was number 1.
Anybody who knows this sport well and judges the greatness of fights based on the level of skill shown (not just on entertainment) knows that Frank Shamrock-Ortiz should have been at number 1, but since it wasn't even on the list (thanks to Dana and his problems with Tito and Frank) , it didn't have a chance. And I don't need to tell you that even if it was on the list it wouldn't be ahead of griffin/bonnar, due to TUF and that casual fans just care about brawls.

i thought it was funny that when i could vote for the best fights in ufc history i couldnt choose fights like yves edwards vs josh thompson, but i could chose junie browning vs david kaplan. Im not wasting money on that crap. Id like to see the fight nights come out on dvd for like a cheap 10 bucks. I do collect ufc tapes jsut for the hell of it. but i only started watching the ppvs at ufc 60. So ive went from 60 on up. Im missing ufc 72, 89, 94. but those all sucked anyway. Who bought ufc 72? seriously? thats right... no one

Steven...Don't blame Zuffa for Griffin/Bonnar being Number One...Blame humans. It was completely based on voting, if I'm not mistaken. Hence the disproportionate number of post-TUF fights.
...that said...you could only choose from the selection of fights UFC put on the website.
While we couldn't vote for Tito-Frank Shamrock, they were more than happy to show Tito getting put to sleep by Chuck and spanked by Couture (not at the same time).

Just so you know. i called the top 3. i was also a bit surprised both franklin vs silva fights were in the top ten? did anyone else think those were that great?

zachrhoads09 - lol Well it wasn't that hard to call the top 3. Both griffin-bonnar and Silva-Liddell were obviously going to be in there (even though griffin-bonnar isn't deserving of that placement, and I don't think even Silva-Liddell is deserving of being in the top 3, prob not even top 5). And no, you aren't the only one who didn't think the Silva-Franklin fights were great.

yeah it was pretty disappointing, the closer to the top of the countdown they got the more you could tell that it wasn't about the actual fights. there were way too many one sided affairs and not enough truly competitive fights where both guys performed well. like matt said, how in the hell was silva's double demolishing of franklin great fights? great performance by one guy, true, but great fight...hardly.

i was there live when silva fought franklin for the second time. Never seen so many pissed off fans. you would think cincy fans would be used to stuff like that being bengal fans in all. I will say the bengals are having a decent season this year. Steve- i love that whole fight card. ufc 49 was one of the best events. I also beleive matt lindland and dave terrell being on that. that one makes me laugh everytime. But seriously.... junie and david kaplan?

Zach...I think the awfulness of Sylvia-Vera might have had the fans in Cincy in a sour mood. They also had to sit through Jorge Gurgel (Cincy guy) get dominated by Alvin Robinson. The beating Ace took might have just been the final straw.

The first silva franklin fight was awesome because of the pure domination that i dont think anyone actually expected. I mean, I knew silva would win, but [profane] he ruined franklin's whole world with that fight. the second one was just more of the same as silva already had franklin's heart in his pocket. Silva has to be P4P, just because of the sheer domination he has put on other fighters. NO ONE has come close to beating him in the last few years and when they do seem to get an idea of what to do with him (lutter), it only gets him excited to actually be in a fight. When he stood up from lutter's defense and put his hands up like ok lets do this, i half expected lutter to just [profane] his pants and hop over that cage and go hide in the locker room. I guess griffin did learn something from watching silva tapes. Just go down as quick as possible and get the hell out of there before u get stood back up.

rob, to be honest that whole card sucked. watching it live was nice... but the fights were bad. we had to sit thru sylvia-vera gurgel-robinson/ starnes-belcher/ mcdonald-okami/ burkman-petz. the only good fights were damian mai's debut, and i dont know if you have seen it but matt grice and jason black was one hell of a fight.

Grice-Black wasn't televised. Unfortunately, despite that card being in my backyard, I couldn't make it.
The lasting image I have from that card (other than Silva doing the Matrix and then crumpling Ace against the cage) was Kalib Starnes's cut. Ewww...

Barry - "I guess griffin did learn something from watching silva tapes. Just go down as quick as possible and get the hell out of there before u get stood back up."
That, or he went down so quickly due to the sheer stupidity of charging at Silva with his (not so great) chin sticking out waiting to be hit, which is the usual story in his standup.
